I've expressed stuff like this before about CCP and their (arguably mold-breaking) game EVE Dust 514. The game is unrelenting, unsympathetic, unforgiving to the player, never pretends to be coddling, and never pretends to be willing to give do-over to banckrupt players, or to give first-aid to mercs feeling the pain of being trampled. Deliberately producing a "game" that is torture for mind and fingers is umm... "sadistic".
But if a dentist tells me up front that "Baby, this is gonna HURT", instead of saying "you won't feel TOO MUCH disconfort at all", I'm more okay about what's coming. It's why I DO like Dust. CCP earned my respect because they let us see UP FRONT that they were intentionally going to keep this game a blood-sweat-and gruel GRIND, so we can't say we were fooled, and we always had the choice to bow out of this game for free (...and I remember how many of us got infuriated, threw down their gun yelling "Dude, this is bull*^$@", culled themselves out of our pack, and moved on---unwilling or unable to adapt to Dust's, err...' innovative ' in-play concepts.)
I play Dust with one mantra: "Expect NO charity, no welfare aid, no tuition-assistance, and no ACTUALLY-USEFUL free giveaways from this game. EVER!" That one, true, sucker-free TRIPLE SP EVENT we had shortly after the May realease... Celesta, that was a splendid fluke, a genetic freak, a Jovian research reject. It's the only real multi-SP event we ever had, and a mistake like that will never be allowed again in New Eden. That's what I will continue to tell myself when I read each new "player event" advertisement.
This is why the Million Clone Challenge really deserves a merc salute. It is another genetic freak. The only other one we've had since May. It's most amazing and superb trait, is that battlefield players were COLLECTIVELY working together to produce a prize that was going to be given to ALL of us as a POPULATION,... a prize that is not proportioned amongst the highest killboarders, but DUPLICATED to each player regardless of whether she succeeded in annihalating 300 reds, or got slapped down 300 times trying her best to get ONE descent kill.
As PS3 console players, we are still clumsily trying to improve our "social" and "co-op teamwork to win" thing in Dust. But the Million Clone event was so "New Eden" and so "Social" , it was the greatest tribute to the Eve Online atitude of gameplay that we mercs have ever had. When those surfers compete at Mavericks, the one who wins the money prize usually decides to split the money with all the other contestants in the end as a sign of community-cool. (But a lot of folks say those surfers smoke weed--that's why they do hippie stuff like sharing prize money... I know better than to belive that---the surfers share cuz they know how to be Cool).
...This event was Rock On Cool, CCP. ROCK ON!!! |

While that's definitely some people's play style, it isn't all of ours. But I hope the value message gets sent to the tankers. Stop destroying everything useful to us for freaking points...
Well said, Lee!!
It doesn't really matter whether players keep the following in mind or not (because ever since Patch 1.6 CCP clearly shows they're going to regulate and steer this game down their unique-thinking path regardless--good for them!):
--Spamming items for leaderboard or private player profit.... --Camping on spawn-points for club-leaderboard bragging or quicker slaughter of player reserves.... --Duckshooting NUETRAL installations for private score-boosting... --Munchausen-Medic (that's when you fatally shoot your own teammate, and immediately revive him with a med stim to unlock "medic" bonus items for yourself).... --Speed-Gonzalez Road Killing with available vehicles for private player pleasure...
....are ALL classic, traditional, ready-for-retirement home, methods MOST fps players used to exploit or pillage the TRADITIONAL-minded shooters. Thankfully many of those players who tried fiercely to bring those licenses (some players call them "cheats'-techniques") into Dust,...gave up and moved on. Because CCP is constantly trying to strangle that kind of gameplay out, so it won't have much of a home in DUST 514.
++Cleverly deploying uplinks where they count the most, and always out of obvious sight... ++Hacking a NEUT object to make it OURS instead of blowing it up.... ++Hacking each Red CRU immediately, to close off their access to the map and Redline them... ++Using your steering wheel to position friendly mercs and useful weapons around the map instead of using the steering wheel solely as stooges' taxi. ++Never turning your weapon on a fellow player, just because he has the fighting-impulse to turn everything Red and potentially dangerous into something Blue and potentially useful...
....these are SOME of the non-traditional, TRUE-TEAM-minded fps methods THE REST of us are starting to discover. Harder to do? YEAH. Newer than the retiree methods (not another CoD, again?)... Yep. More satisfying? To me yeeesss, but that may be because I and four other players racked up and won every match we fought in during the Million Clone event... and all we used was one DS, one HAV, and one co-op mindset: Hack & Hold!
Have patience, Lee. We are forgivingly accepting that a large minority of those (um, crusty? ) classic FPS minds are still here playing Dust with us. We pass by them on the maps, excersising their playing style. We often smile and hand them a cane for their arthritis, as we leave them and conquer the maps using the real team-tactics we are learning in this game.
...Maybe they'll catch up to us before the matches get so expanded that those ole' CoD shooter techniques won't help them much at all... |

LOL!!
Paran, you're cracking me up. You players are so TRUSTING when it comes to claims and promises about ISK and SP in this game. Remember?... We're an extension of EVE Online. EVE ONLINE!! More players have been banboozeled and extorted by their OWN TRUSTING HABITS, than by any clever tricksters in that game.
CCP originally said "By Thursday". I plan to close my eyes (walk around bumping into walls) until Downtime Thursday, before I believe that Santa will put 30-second Cool Down Enhanced Afterburners on his sleigh to get my SP to me today. It's not that I don't trust CCP... I just learned not to trust New Eden.
Believe me Paran, it's less anxiety that way. |

Hahn, hello!
That is not good news you're relaying. I got my SP gift, for BOTH my characters successfully. The only things I can think of that would STOP you from having received you 2 MILL by now is:
You didn't SUCCESSFULLY record at least 10 completed battles (COMPLETED, not started-and-left-battle, or started-but-kicked-out-in-mid-session-by-server-glitch) , with EACH of your characters (so, if you have TWO or more characters, you have to have fought 10 X 2 battles Minimimum.)...
CCP's Server did not correctly acknowledge your participation in the event.
They may be very busy with this Patch 1.8 loading going on,... but I would contact them and let them know you are an orphan right now. You don't want something like 2 MILL SP slipping through the cracks.
Let us know how it turns out. Good Luck!! |
