Currently we have little to go on when it comes to pirate factions other than we fight for them in public matches. I feel that we could be doing a lot more with them. I could imagine we run missions with them and lose standing for the factions we're committing these acts on. I could also imagine that pirate contracts would be of a much higher difficulty level than other contracts as well.
..... Well there is plenty of lore on them out there... if you are willing to look.
If people cant even stomach what the regular empires do how could they ever hope to be pirate mercenaries?

If we did serve pirate factions and I can see some very interesting game modes/ mechanics in the furthest darkest reaches of my mind, I suppose we would require a true standing models inclusive of security status, CONCORD presence, etc. Well technically we all started out as Mordu's legion, though MORDU is really tame compared to the other pirate factions...Sansha Kuvali...that guy is off his nutter, and Blood raiders...eat people.
I don't think any of us started off a Legion Members and Mordu's Legion is not truly considered a Pirate Faction, they are more of a Mercenary Group......but I guess I'll have to look into that so I can be up to date lore wise.

My first character started in Serpentis.
I don't see why we can't have an option to join them again. It would be AWESOME if they had their own type of FW
Well from what I remember not every faction was pirate but there were a lot more factions. I based my character off of the original Sarum Imperial Guard.... but there were cool groups like
Arkombine, Angel Cartel< Serpentis, Nation, etc...much more varied than just empire factions.

I based mine off of the original Sarum Imperial Guard original default corps http://dust514.com/universe/corporations/Sarum Imperial guard should be listed in place of amarr; not sure why the whole empire is listed as a corp Also just noticed that the blood raider description all-but-confirmed that we'll be fighting pirates in PVE: they're out for clone blood
Cause were just that good.

And I didn't really think of us being able to join pirate factions... That brings a lot more ideas into my head. Aside from the role play aspect, I can imagine that pirate factions would give you plenty risk but lots of reward.
Oh and also that being a pirate essentially bars you from High Sec space entirely, especially the larger trade hubs.
So you would have the consequence of not being able to operate in Empire space at all.

Pirates factions, not being able to take land for themselves could also potentially raid closed PC districts and rob them of isk. As a consequence, we could have a concord faction that specializes in chasing them down.
This is true about land taking but each faction has a home system they could operate out of.

Yeah, I think the penalty might be a problem considering that the majority of the players in Dust don't really know about the complicated side of New Eden. If there was some type of clean slate system where you could start off with a clean slate but at a major cost, it would be fine.
And while I pity them I don't believe pandering is in order. Players should come to Dust not just for a good shooter, but the "more than that" factor Dust has.
As a Pirate you need to feel like one. This isn't to say you are banned from Pubs, only say limited in certain aspects of High Sec content when such features are developed.

Pirate players not being able to access High-Sec trade hubs and having to go to black markets, probably being banned from FWs, and other aspects where standings matter.
Wouldn't that be cool as well to have your own black markets...etc

I would love to see a blood paint job on a suit and I would like it more if the suit was different than the standard. I have a blood legion suit, after work I will see if I can find a picture of it for you. Frick, we have those? I'd love to see it.
Who the hell are the Blood Legion?

For a second I thought it was a Full Metal Alchemist reference but then I remember it wasn't.
Original or Brotherhood? Which was better?

They should be taught as they watch their clone grow in a tank.
Indeed you bring up a fantastic point.
Most people don't know or care what EVE is.
And they need to. EVE/ Dust Link however small it is now, is a core feature of the game, understanding that these mercs you are shooting are within EVE is crucial to the games atmosphere.
Dust should convey with each battle a wider context, when you go into ambush you actually are ambushing, perhaps and initial deployment scheme could create that idea, or a contextual voice over pre battle as you fade in from a back screen.
Perhaps when you play a skirmish match you feel as though, yes this entire battle is one small skirmish of a planetary invasion force.
Its small details like this which could really spice up and make gameplay that extra bit more impressive.
