while in the shower, was thinking of what I wanted to do come 1.8 if a respect if given. Having played every suit role at one point or another, I've still always come back to the assault suit, even though (and especially) come 1.8, that role seems will be "fazed" out. Never the less, it got me to thinking the basic Q .... Shields or Armor suit ; as most likey will have to dual tank with how the meta will be and how damage mods have been altered.
It got me thinking into possible setups and positives/negatives to each; when something "hit me". Say you take a Gal. Assault suit, and put 2 plates on it, repper, and ?? 4th slot, put in your equp/weap/nade/etc . You can get ~500 armor and such, leaving you your 3 high slots. Say you use 2 of them for complex extenders. That puts you up to a ~290/500 hp setup. You're thinking, great whats the point. The point comes in the aspect of the extenders negative passive of 7% depleted delay. Now, I believe on all the suits besides the Caldari come 1.8, the depleted delay is 10s . So the Gal in this case would be 11.4s.
Take the same idea into a Caldari suit. You shield tank the top in your 4 slots. However, this gives you a 28% depleted delay rate, making the initial 8s -->10.24 sec .
The main thought I had was, would it be better suited to remove the delay penalty, as by adding hp to a shield suit, you in fact make it "weaker" in causing a high depleted delay, and the only way to counter it back to normal is adding a complex regulator, which in tern means you'd be sacrificing hp (in lower slot to duel tank) in order to do that. If not, the 2s disparity b/t shield and armor suit I reduction to a 1s difference.
If you'd say the penalty is still needed to have some negative aspect like some plates have; would a increase to that of regulators be a better option; as it'd give a better incentive to only shield tank w/ a faster depleted/general recharge rate then adding armor to duel tank ?

The Depleted Delay Penalty was added at the same time that Armor Plates were buffed. Shields were much better than Armor, so lets buff Armor by lowering the Penalty and increasing the HP while adding a Penalty to Shields. Basically, they should have gone with 2 rather than all 3. With Armor being what all the cool kids are using, the Shield Penalty is kind of strange considering Shields are strictly worse at this here juncture.
I doubt there will be any change to Shield Modules in 1.8 though. I think CCP is wise enough to know that people used Damage Mods because Shield Mods were laughable. Now that Damage Mods were lowered, the odds of Shield Modules getting increase is unlikely to me. Of course, I did just mention what they did when Armor was buffed so who knows?
It is hard to say if Dual Tank will be all the rage like everyone is predicting. 2 Complex Damage Mods give a 9.56% damage increase while two Complex Shield Extenders would give 145.2 Shields. Considering something like the Scrambler Rifle will only be doing 80% damage to Armor, this helps bridge that gap. It probably won't be overly helpful for Blasters, Rails, and Projectile weaponry as their damage profiles are not as steep as Explosives and Laser weaponry.
Of course, assuming CCP knows this, why would they just buff Shield Modules and make it an obvious choice? Everyone is already saying "just use Shield Modules" so why bother helping shields out?

On topic, I agree. Shield Regulators should have a larger effect, to make them viable. But, there also needs to be more high slot options, since there are only two worthwhile mods and one of them is getting extremely nerfed. |

agreed . Reason mentioned shield buff on a few topics; is if you buff shield extenders (and even if keep penalty), if you allow say 3 current extenders to =2 of a new type; it frees a high slot for either another extender, or even a recharger/energizer, or maybe even precision enhancement mods. That will in itself allow for diversity to be created that otherwise wouldn't be.

Not sure if the penalty should be removed from the Extenders, it will be a different dynamic once TTK is adjusted in 1.8 Right now the depleted delay is mostly irrelevant.

Thats the point, Shield tankers are meant to have lower EHP in total. Focusing instead on regenration is what Shield Tankers are meant to do. By forcing Shield Tankers to choose, it ensures you can't have it all.
Unless your a Computer Scientist don't tell me how Game Mechanics Work.

Here's an idea that just popped into my head. This is a work in progress,so don't jump down my neck for it.
What if both armor plates(including reactive and ferroscale) and shield extenders were on the same slot path?Either high slots or low slots, put them on one side and every other module that would require a high or low slot on another slot.
So let's say you are running a Caldari Assault proto fit.I'll just for example sake say that they plates and extenders are on high slots. So the proto fit will have four high slots, and three low slots.
You could mix and match your shield and armor tanking between the four slots, but running a Caldari fit,you would want to take advantage of the extra HP that you get from extenders if you are into the assault fits, but you still would have the option to completely armor tank, but it would always be less than the other racial suits because of the lower base.
Ok,so now on the low side, that's were everything would get interesting. You would have your three slots for everything else like damage mods, active scanners, armor reppers, profile dampeners,kin-cats,whatever.The point is,now that everything else is on the low slot, you really have to think even more than now about how exactly you want to run your suit to maximize your situational usage of your fit on the battlefield.
All of this too would be dependent on CPU/PG usage as well as the other low slot modules(in my example) would have to be readjusted for balance.Make it where you can't run around with a proto scanner, and proto dampener without taking a major hit to power consumption.
IDK,if someone else could expand on this thought to make it a viable option, feel free to.

With the low slot module that benefits depleted delay (the name of it eludes me right now) how is this different from now? I think I am not following your thought process here.
