Good job, this is a big part of the problem, people don't know or understand that to get the most out of this game you have to engage with the community. This game, much like other FPSs, is boring and very repetitive if you are not involved with the community or try to lone wolf all the time. I am a loner but I do squad up and mess around in channels, maybe adding just a HELP! channel that is there from the beginning or something like that may help. We shouldn't have to lead each new player by the hand to every little thing but a good kick in the butt in the right direction may go a long way.
The NPE would take 2.5 hours if they were to just try to teach the basics, at a point it is our job as a community to pick up the NPE slack and tell CCP that we can do it better. We have more resources as a whole to do things like that than CCP ever will, this is a social media site for the male soap opera known as DUST514 and when people learn that early on it makes things easier for them.

It's not about getting "GOOD", it's all about getting proto. That's a HUGE contributing factor to winning and losing. And PvE really should be a focus right now, as this RPG/FPS is severely lacking in the RPG department.
It is not so much about getting proto as it is about learning where SP should go and practice with what you like or are good at, I have been here since around the first waves of closed beat invites and I have only ever had one proto suit and it was during chrome. Proto suits and other proto gear are not necessary to have fun, be good, be profitable or even be competitive because squads, teamwork and experience in game is much more valuable. I use proto reptools and hives, everything else I use is advanced or under. No, I am not a slayer but I am a good logi and being good at a role or valuable to a team is what the game is about. Don't underestimate the value of good support.
Your are right that PVE is sorely needed and it would help -a lot- with the feeling of repetitiveness that we get right now. I would love to melt a drone with my ELM while fighting off a few other mercs who want the same thing. Sounds really fun and very interesting. They need to fill out the racial suits, introduce player trading and then drop PVE all while tweaking the stats to get the game balanced.
