The only reason it did well is the inability of most players to think tactically. Thus, the AR users (usually) continued to run up to point blank range on the flaylock - it's niche. They were then outgunned. This is how niche weapons should work. It never outdid the MD except that the fittings requirements were too lenient.
One intangible problem with generalist weapons like the AR at the time is that it doesn't allow players to learn tactics. because the weapon is an "allrounder" there's no need to learn tactics. Thus, when something comes along like the flaylock, which again wasn't OP, the typical AR user did not react by learning to engage at range - where the AR remains the clearly superior weapon, but instead, closed range and was killed. Thus began the forum whining.
The flaylock was too easy to fit. That is all. The rest can be put down to players refusing to learn, and instead crying on the forums.
I suspect you'll disagree, and fine, but Dust needs more weapons like the flaylock - useful niche weapons and far less like the AR - OP generalist weapons.
Your right i do disagree, I think you give the flaylock far too much credit. Most players do have an inability to think tactically but those of us that do have the ability hated the flaylock. It was so powerful and easy to use tactics didn't matter; if you met a flaylock user head to head or even let one get the high ground that was it, you were either dead or had a flaylock of your own to counter.
All a flaylock user had to do was jump and aim at your feet, the splash was enough to kill anyone but the most tanked heavies. I'm all for the flaylock being useful but it in and of itself shouldn't require an extreme change of playstyle and tactics to counter it while only requiring a sidearm slot and negligible CPU. It should require the user to get direct hits to be so devastating which would mean the user has to be either close enough to melee or have superior skill. So a buff to the flaylocks direct damage while it's splash remains little more then a finisher or deterrent would be fine with me.
Consider the ScP, it can be argued that it is OP but it requires enough skill to draw out its power that it will never become wildly used as the Flaylock was. I myself never complain when a ScP kill me because the Merc using it had enough skill to outgun me and get headshots rather then just aiming near my feet.
