The old style of FG sniping was a pain in the neck. How is it similar to using an ADS? How is it different?

Back in the day, a guy with a FG could sit on high spot and blast people. The splash radius of the FG was 6m, and did enough damage to kill just about anything. CCP nerfed it, as the FG is not primarily a AI weapon.
Now, ADSes fly around and blast down on people with explosive rounds, killing almost anything.
To me, they seem the same. One was nerfed, the other wasn't. The ADS I think has more advantages doing this though. But the FG did have better accuracy (and a shorter charge time back then, even though missiles cycle quicker)

Cost for one 500K ISK DS 200K ISK suit. maneuverability FG is stuck on the tower an ADS can chase you skill factor Counter I can easily pull out a glass cannon Paticle Cannon and one shot almost any ADS in a half a second and nubs can use 0 sp glass cannon Sica's but you need to have some SP into snipers and damage mods + knowledge of sniper positions + a small level of skill

ADS's also. Cost 450k - 700k risk and can be oneshotted by a railtanker

There are more differences than similarities.
Similarity: Both rely upon splash damage for kills
Differences: FG has a significant range advantage over the small missle ADS The ADS must be flown while shooting. This divides the pilots attention. The FG shoots from a stationary position while the ADS is in constant motion, often drifting off target. The FG gets to see his target, the ADS pilot frequently has to target somone obscured by the bulk of his ship. The ADS pilot has a significant disadvantage in rendering his opponent. The ADS is much bigger target and can't hide behind cover as easily as a FG user. The ADS costs quite a bit more than the FG. Redline Rails can deny the ADS most of the map where the FG user has much more cover for his activities. |

   Ok, thank you for clarifying.
  To answer your question:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LsxU9JyUfUA As the god of dropships in Dust514 explained, ADS pilots are aiming at pixels. Or at least they feel like pixels to me.
From personal experience, aiming with an assault dropship is like trying to shoot at a target while blindfolded and balancing on a ball. I kid you not. ADS pilots have to aim through their dropship; effectively aiming blind with only red tags to help. ADS pilots must also steady and maneuver their dropship while aiming, which is actually really freaking hard.
You should already know what using a forge gun is like so I won't bother to go over that.
In terms of role, flying around and shooting down at things on the ground is what ADSs were made for.
I hope that helps answer your question. <-- (I've been told that people take comfort in fake smiles. So here you go. :P)

The Forge gun use to be the caldari version of the Mass Driver. Lots of people QQed and the Forge Gun took one for the team and came out with the clap and another STD that caused the ROF delay. Saddly, The Forge Gun was only a problem when we had team view enabled. Any buddy that tries to tell you anything else are just chest pounders.
People forget that the Forge Gun is a Heavy Weapon class, Your a big ass target, and like the person sad above not everyone can fly a dropship.

Uh splash damage? Of the hundreds of forge kills I've gotten I think maybe 10 were splash. The direct shot is so much more effective, maybe its just how I use it though. CQC with the forge is pretty fun and its a great Anti heavy/anti proto stomper weapon as nobody expects to get forged within 15m they see a heavy they assume HMG. Sniping at >50m I find hard though. I've had a lot of rendering issues. Might be because I can never play on my home server (oceanic).
