It really does come down to you deciding what it is SPECIFICALLY you want to do in this game as a whole. Believe me, remaining Independent/Unincorporated is a lot more work in a lot of ways than being corp'd. Although, any existing corp you join will have its own baggage you will then be liable for, and all employment history stays with you so if/when you start jumping corps to find that "perfect fit", your past affiliations may still hurt (or help) you. Do your diligence.
Do I have a bad name already? I got this account from a coworker. He said it was unused but there were was money in the wallet and some kills and deaths.
Currently you are in an NPC corp, and because of that your record is more or less clean. When you send an app into a corp, typically the application director will look up your in game stats and your employment history to make sure, or at least try to make sure, that your not a spy from another corp.
Your "name" is more or less clean. And honestly, unless your within the games top 10% your name probably wont matter. If you want to know people who are noteworthy, take a look at the leaderboards for kills, the top 100 or so people are people that are more or less respected community members. Unless their name looks Japanese and their k/d also happens to be over 7, because then there probably just tank spamming
Reputation is important though, take me for example, ive been around for two years now and theres a few people who recognize me. Im NOT famous, but I am recognized at the very least.
Honestly, you should just look into getting into a corp for the sake of getting into a corp. If you don't want to worry about "tarnishing your name" then just join Dust University. They'll teach the ropes of the game at least. If you don't care about picking a side and potentially (potentiallyyyyy) harming your name you can look into getting inside of some of the mega-corps like mine for example.
STB, Fatal absolution, Ancient Exiles, War ravens, any of the corps in negative feedback alliance. Ect..... The only reason joining any of those corps is a problem is because by choosing one, your basically picking a side due to the high tensions between two of the in games more powerful/dangerous alliances.
But meh, do your research and you'll figure it out!
