The corporation is the same as a clan right? Are there ranks? Should I just jump in one and make it work? I have received a few invites to join. What should I consider when looking for a clan? I am really impressed by the team work I have seen in this game. Even the guys that just run around killing everybody seem to feed of each other. What is a good way to decide where to go? I am loyal by nature so I would love to get it right the first time.

The best way to figure out if one is right for you is just to join and see how it goes, or squad with them for a while.
I have been using the squad finder it is very helpful. Having a headset gets me renown. I am making contacts and anyone I can learn from I put in the watch list, I haven't found another purpose for it.

Almost, there are a few and minor differences but in the end it's basically the same, you have friends/corp mates who stick with you and battle with you till "death." If you want to succeed in this game, going into a corp is a very important step, if you're new, DUST U is good for them but many of the other good corps have auxiliaries for rookies which are not bad at all either. I would obviously recommend WarRavens Auxiliary but it's up to you.
Do you have a place I can squad up from? I am going to keep my options open. From the sounds of it and from what I read some corporations hate newbs. I am completely trainable and have a mic.

It really does come down to you deciding what it is SPECIFICALLY you want to do in this game as a whole. Believe me, remaining Independent/Unincorporated is a lot more work in a lot of ways than being corp'd. Although, any existing corp you join will have its own baggage you will then be liable for, and all employment history stays with you so if/when you start jumping corps to find that "perfect fit", your past affiliations may still hurt (or help) you. Do your diligence.
Do I have a bad name already? I got this account from a coworker. He said it was unused but there were was money in the wallet and some kills and deaths.

That sounds bad. I just bought the guys PS3. It's not like I am stealing his identity. He is going through a rough patch and his extra console was just collecting dust. I told him there was data on there still and he said I could use it.

Thank you all for your comments and advice. I will be reflecting on the corporation feed back. This game is free to play but comes off as pretty serious. I like that. I hope I can handle the grind. I have experience there, I still play Disgea 2.
