I understand the rationale behind balancing game mechanics, etc., but I must say that FotMs/crutches have never really bothered me. All they really do is incline me to broaden my play style or refine my tactical approach. I'm a middling player to be sure, but my KDR always improves and I'm always racking up more and more WPs.
A/C/RRs got me down, so I put down the ScR and I switch to sniping. Sniping isn't always appropriate/fun, and I don't like getting ground up on the frontline, so I start scouting. Tanks on my bwawls (instant scout death in so many ways), so I get ADS. Lose an ADS to tank spammers/AV and come back with a FG.
I'm actually excited to see what's imbalanced next--it'll make things more interesting for a couple weeks, at least!

Did you know that CCP (eve devs) have stated that balancing isn't just about making everything perfectly... errr... balanced... but also changes are done in order to, on a year... multi-year... basis, throw in elements that encourage players to change play style and such.
Obviously the actually 'broken' stuff is fixed, however that makes me rather optimistic that they're not going for a respec. |

If the game is not balanced then most players won't use a lot of the content (the weaker stuff), thereby wasting all the time the devs spent creating that content.
If you want to play "hard mode" then Dust allows you to create combinations that were never intended to work well, even if every individual item is balanced properly. Has anyone had any success with a Nova Knife heavy?

Two important things:
1) Counter Play
2) Perfect Imbalance
So yes, creating a slight imbalance in the meta can lead to constantly evolving tactics and keep the gameplay from getting stagnant. But it really does need to be slight, and whatever tactic is made slightly more powerful needs to have appropriate viable counters for this to work.
Not just a laymen, but the laymen.
