I believe the answer is a star. They litter the sky, yet are sometimes hard to see. The explosion of a star and the resulting effects (supposedly) created the earth, thus it is a catalyst in such. Stars breath, taking in massive amounts of gas to continue burning. Without the heat of a star (in this case, our sun) we would surely parish from the cold. A star is one of many in the endless expanses of space. Sixth line is the only one that doesn't make sense... And the last part, the death of a star takes thousands of years to be realized as the light is still traveling to the earth long after the star has perished.
