Should a new player focus on skilling up to 5 or would the SP be better spent laying a broader foundation of skills?
For instance I've got armor and shields up to 4 and about 500k SP hoarded. Should I use that sp to level up one to 5 and save the rest for next week to bring the other to 5, or should I branch out now to electronics/engineering with that SP?

I'm at 31.5 mil SP, and I still don't have Armor/Shield upgrades to 5.
For non-fitting skills that only give a slight stat percentage, it's not worth it to level those to 5 - particularly if you have other things you'd rather be skilling into.
The ones I'd leave at level 4 or less are hacking, armor/shield upgrades, explosives, and light/heavy/sidearm weapon operation.
If I were a new player, the only skills I'd level to 5 right away would be drop uplinks and nanocircuitry (equipment spam = more WP and hence faster SP gain), and maybe shield extension if I were a shield tanker. Everything else is more than adequate at basic or advanced. |

To start, many at 3 is better. Then level specific skills to 5 when you have a good reason.
- to get Complex Shield Extenders - to get Complex Damage mods (+10%) - Armor and Shields to 5 if you are a Heavy. - The weapon of your choice to 5 so you can level Proficiency to 3 for +9% damage.
What you find worth leveling to 5 will depend on what role you are playing. But start with leveling anything that is useful to 3, and the very useful stuff to 4.

It's sometimes a hard choice. It comes down to if you think another 5% bonus for a certain skill is worth the SP to get three levels of a different one.
I'd say if you still have to ask then the I wouldn't specialize in anything too heavily. Spread the SP around and experiment until you've found the role you will be committing to.
Try to kill it all you want CCP, I still <3 my laser.

many at 3 is definitely better... especially with faction wars rewarding you LP allowing you early access to prototype items, there should be no rush to level 5 everything...
once you have all your required skills for your role at 3, then work on...
armor/shields (heavy suits only) main weapon operation 5/ profiency 3 (as of now - a must have) electronics/engineering modules/equipment
OR work on a second role... there's no rules stating that you have to be prototype... advanced fittings will give you the best bang for your buck... i'm skilled into proto heavy and only run advanced fittings... it's your sandbox...

I hate myself a little for phrasing it this way, but always listen to what the fox say. Those are the only skills to get to 5 until you are well over 10mil SP (unless you're a scout, in which case dampening and biotics should be high on your list too.)

Let me just point out that while Prototype suits, weapons, and equipment are quite expensive, Prototype modules are not a huge expense and often are substantially better than Advanced modules. For instance Standard damage mods give you +3%, Advanced give you +5%, and Prototype give you +10% damage which is twice as good as the Advanced version.
Putting Prototype modules on a standard suit with a standard weapon is usually the most bang for your buck.
As has been mentioned, if you have your skill to 3 you can use AUR or Faction Warfare Proto modules. However, if you donGÇÖt want to grind for several different types of faction gear, it may be worth it to you at some point to level a skill up to 5 to gain access to the regular Prototype module.
That is a step to take after all the skills you need are to 3 or 4 though, as it will also require you to level Engineering and Electronics in order to fit the higher level gear on your standard suit, and those are skill point expensive skills.

If it is skills that affect CPU and PG, then I'd say play with your fits, see what you want to equip and that will guide you as to what level of Electronics or Engineering that you desire.
For all or most other skills, lvl 3 seems to be the point that gives the best cost/benefit for your SP.

what you skill to level 5 will depend on what you like to use, or what is needed to be effective.
can always ask questions.. people will give an opinion whether its wanted or not. but many will give good advice or well when I was in your place stories.

I'll just reinforce here, level 4 and 5 of every skill offer diminishing returns per SP spent (for most skills). Don't be afraid to do the math, and listen to Fox, he's got a good, balanced approach to leveling from what I've seen.

aye there is a loss per SP spent once you hit level 4.. but if you want specialized gear like the triage rep tool which you can only get as a level 5 repair tool.
level 3 in most gear is just right, level beyond 3 only if it is a skill that you MUST have to play the game the way you want too.. I like playing logi so I have repair tool to 5, working on Nano circuitry to 5 etc. see as a logi I want to have access to all of the level 5 gear I need in my fittings.. so repair to 5 nano to 5 I use Minnie logi so uplinks,scanners only to 4 for now until I see what the new logi nerf will look like. need to get armor to level 5 and plates to 5 asap, already have shields to 5 for core skill and extenders.
see I know where I like to play, logi side of the game but also specced in assault suits and now working on vehicle skill and will get Minnie heavy as well for the next big heavy event, maybe even advance sentinel Minnie would be nice. then onto ADS and tanks level 5
the sooner you find your core game style the better so you don't toss away SP on stuff you will never use.. like side arms you don't use but put to level 3 or 4 ooops. learned that the hard way on several proto weapons I no longer use at all oops.
and hey like I should have done ask.. uggh is the flaylock any good??... oops should have done that.

I think it also depends on your role. As a scout, I find lvl 5 dampening a must. I don't know that would help other roles as much however.

With the dev notes out, this is changing to +3%, +4% and +5% per level so it might not be the skill you want to reinvest in or focus on depending on the sp refund that may or may not come.
However, more at 3 is better than a few maxed at 5. Having a broader scope (but not too broad) is more important. Focus on your role first. If you have an idea of what role that is, Fox has some amazing guides that include where those skills should be spent. Otherwise, if you need more time to find that niche role, the Learning Coalition can take you on 'follow a scout/heavy/tanker' at work day, to give you a better idea of where those lvl 3 skills should lie.
As always though, I am a believer that core skills should be at lvl 4 before anything else.

Well, my unspent SP total has grown to 730k. I think I'm going with CPU/PG upgrade next as I realize I'm running into limitations on my loadouts. Then if I'm still leaning towards scout, I'll get into those next. If I feel I need to raise the others to 5 I can always go back to them. And I'm still going to hold out on weapons until after 1.8.

Granted, things might change with the upcoming patch, however...
I don't think I have ever had an issue with PG on scout suits. Logi yes, and moderately so with assaults, but I can't think of a time when I wanted more PG on a scout. CPU though, that was my first maxed out to lvl 5 skill I did.
My skill path was roughly, get a bunch of dropsuit skills to lvl 3 so that I was decently well rounded. Shotguns lvl 3, Minmatar scouts to lvl 3. CPU/Biotics/Hacking/shields/armor lvl 5, roughly in that order, Cardiac/Kinetic/Precision/Profile/Range lvl 5s, shield extension/shotguns lvl 5. All other dropsuit skills are sitting at lvl 3 or below.
Then I've put SP into some different weapons and suits, dumped 300kish into HAVs so I can pilot Maddy's for fun, and that's where 18 million of my 23.5 million SP have wound up. I'm sitting on 5.5 million SP waiting on the new update.
Current plan is to get one, still to be determined, scout suit to lvl 5, cloaking to lvl 3 for testing, 5 upon confirmation that I want to use cloaks, and after that, I dunno. I want to get one weapon fully specced out, but I'm still not sure which one as I am pretty happy with most of the weapons I have tried.
