This is mostly a "food for thought" kind of thread just to explore possibilities, so don't get too worked up. TL;DR: 1 weapon for each race that runs counter to their usual MO.
So we've got Nova Knives, the Caldari racial knife, and they work. CCP seemed to have planned a whole set of knives, one for each race, but is there a lot that can be done with knives? Sure, you could have one that swings slower and does more damage, or one that swings faster and does less, but there's going to be one that's best out that, as no one wants to have to circle 1m from someone and kill them with a thousand paper cuts.
There have been attempts at making the variance in the weapon style itself (maces, swords, etc) instead of just having knives, but I personally feel like that doesn't fit too well into New Eden. This isn't WH40k, where everyone's got a gun in one hand and a sword/axe in the other.
I do feel that knives (so long as they can make it to the squishy human inside) will always have a place on soldiers, to give them an option to defend themselves should they lose access to their main weapon, so lets keep the Nova Knife.
Abolishing a "melee class" weapon category leaves the Nova Knife without a classification, however. So what about a new classification, a "Miscellaneous" or "Counter-Doctrine" class where each race gets a weapon that is the opposite of their usual tactics? Much like the old "Specialist" category (that turned out to be made up of weapons from "Launchers" and "Precision" weapons), this category will have weapons that don't have too much in common, but run along racial lines. Only it's opposite day in this class.
The Caldari prefer to fight at extreme range, but they have Nova Knives, the shortest weapon in the game. So, how about... The Gallente prefer to fight at extreme close range, but this new weapon will work at long ranges. The Amarr prefer advanced lasers which do great against shields, but this new weapon will be good against armor. The Minmatar prefer rapid skirmish weaponry, but this weapon will be an almost emplaced-weapon.
How they'd work and what they'd do I'll leave up to you guys, as I just wanted to brain storm on this classification method. Would the Minmatar weapon be a light weapon that you'd have to "deploy" to use? (Like can only fire while ADS'd) Would the Gallente weapon be some sort of sniper-ish weapon that wouldn't overlap with w/e the Gallente precision weapon will be? Would the Amarr be whatever?
Now is the winter of our non-content.
