Have you ever gunned on a small turret. You could NOT be more exposed. You are a tall beacon with no protection, cannot strafe side to side, and the weapon (lav turret) is typically on par with a lower end (although not Plasma cannon low) primary weapons.

This has always been one of my favourite dropship ideas. I would love to see roaming tank buster dropships raining down swarms and mass drivers (light weapons only for balance) or anti infantry squads that can keep targets suppressed with ease.
I think the best part about this idea is that it is very difficult to make it OP using only light weapons or sidearms given that they wouldn't have the range required to be truly devastating but could easily get into position for suppression.

I think being more exposed would be all part of the balance of it. Pilots can choose to have better weapons such as small turrets and have the added protection, or can go in with a harness which would use less PG and CPU. This would then free up space for other modules as well as giving more versatility of weapon choice and squad coordination.
Not being able to move would mean more reliance and coordination with Drivers/ Pilots but i think it would be a good thing and make it more fun.
On LAV's people don't always use good small turrets which means they are less effective, this is usually due to the weaker Hulls of the LAV. However with the added versatility of using regular weapons with the harness it could make it more effective.
I personally like the idea of a Heavy with a heavy machine gun on the back of a half decent LAV, although would be interesting to see weather it would be OP.

Even with heavy weapons i don't think this would be too bad it would essentially be a cheap coordinated tank. Having it as a weapon slot choice for the vehicle would mean that a DropShip could only have 2 slots worth anyway making it balanced and considering that is either side, they would rarely shoot the same target as the same time.
