They more or less stated at their videogame conference Fanfest last year that there were 80 million PS3s out and 0 PS4s and that they couldn't be bothered to develop for something that didn't even exist yet. There are over 5 million PS4s out now, but I think they'll probably want to polish up what they've got on the PS3 first before they consider porting it to the PS4. I think they'll want to deal with a few major issues first such as game balance, PVE, player market, a f@cked up Planetary Conquest system, etc. etc. They got a new boss to oversee DUST 514 a few months ago (they've obviously been getting him up to speed by first doing an inventory of the game and the company, and then by brainstorming and planning new projects, etc.) and they've been hiring other new personnel lately so they must be gearing up for something big maybe to be announced as "coming soon" at May's Fanfest. Though they do seem to be yielding somewhat to pressure from the DUST 514 merc community, CCP otherwise does seem to be committed to DUST 514, but they've also seemed to be in no big hurry to try to compete yet with the biggies such as COD, Battlefield and probably newcomer Titanfall too. They apparently do no marketing whatsoever, for instance, which would seem to be a good way to get new players . . . and they have done little to improve the new-player experience. One reason for this exasperating patience is probably that EVE Online, their successful main game, makes them enough money, and thus they can afford to be patient with DUST 514.
This game (and I'm thinking EVE Online plus DUST 514) is horribly complex. No other FPS is doing or trying to do anything like it (possibly with very limited resources till now). I think, no, I hope that they'll eventually be integrating it more fully into EVE Online. That's where it will really get large, complex and epic! But, the current Orbital Bombardment link up is ridiculous. And the Planetary Conquest system has teams of 16 mercs taking over entire districts on planets, which is laughable! Especially when compared to EVE Online's super-mega-space-battle(s) with over 4,000 spaceships. The PVE will apparently have something to do with clearing out infestations of Drones from districts. You really ought to be able to attack a district at any time of day (because making an appointment for an invasion is laughable as well), so perhaps the standard way to hold a district ought to be with Drones, but that's speculation. There's actually no telling how things will actually turn out in the end. |
