I never understood this. Vehicles typically show up at a greater distance because they are more deadly. They have more defense, more HP, more attack power, and can cover far greater distances in a shorter time than infantry. One vehicle can always do more damage than one person. I'm not describing the vehicles in Dust, I'm describing the vehicles in any online FPS's today. This is true for pretty much every FPS.
In Dust, however, they show up on the radar once they are within the basically same distance as anyone on foot - which, to be very clear, is usually too late to respond to. They have zoom in weapons so they don't even need to get close enough to you.
My proposal: Make vehicles show up if they are within range of your radar - not within your scan range but your RADAR.
I theorize this is one of the main reasons why people complain so much about tanks. They can't avoid them because they can't see them. If you could sufficiently see them before they see you, you would probably hide long enough for them to roll by. I'm a Gal scout and can see enemies from further away, and vehicles still disappear from my radar way before the get to the outer-most ring, and appear just as fast.
Yes, I'm aware you can hear them, but you hear them way before they show up on the radar and you can't really tell which way they are coming from unless you have surround sound. So many times I personally have heard a tank and then just dropped everything, and hid until finally I see a teammate tank roll onto my radar.
I suspect the people who will most dislike this idea are tankers, or masochists, but if you are a tanker and you have any skill whatsoever then this idea shouldn't bother you. |

Drop ships both normal and assault variant are considered stealth vehicles, so this should not apply to them.
Tanks on the other hand should be on your radar like the sun in the sky on a clear day.
Blatant Dust_514 recruiting in the silliest of places. :P

I want to agree with you but at the same time dropships already show up at the same range as a tank, plus they still have the capability for instant death. Maybe split the difference and show up on radar not the moment it touches radar but once its a bit closer than a tank. |

I'd agree that all vehicles, dropships included, need to have higher detection ranges - i.e. higher signature footprints. None of the vehicles - not even LAVs - are 'quiet'. That said, due to sound constrictions in the game (many players lack surround sound) this only provides a basic warning at best and, very important to note, doesn't immediately tell you friend or foe if they're off radar OR you have a friendly vehicle on radar.
And because of the sheer volume of vehicles - especially RDVs, which pose no immediate threat - vehicle noise provides little in the way of direction or even distance detail.
I'd propose that vehicles be detectable at the range the current player radar can see - that's a lot of warning time if the vehicle isn't directly heading for the player - but if they are you still only have roughly 6 seconds to turn around and AV or find cover.
Dropships are not stealth vehicles - there MAY be stealth dropships in the future (really hopes so - I fly) and stealth vehicles to make detection much harder. But right now, all vehicles are standard fare and should be relatively easy to detect in advance. It's ridiculous my "advanced" TACNET sensors can't see a tank on the other side of a wall from me, but sees the troops running next to it.
My personal opinion is that ANYTHING a team member detects (via direct vision, scanners, or their local TACNET radar) should be viewable by ALL team members regardless of location on the map. Good grief, we have cloud sharing in 2014 - and a ship the size of all google server farms combined sitting in the sky shooting...two...guns. Pretty sure the computational power is there.
That guy you killed with 0% shields?
Yeah, I sniped him - go team.
Oh, you didn't know...hmm.
