If you map out each build based on the current skill tree it only make sense to make the most of the racial bonus. Commando's should be able to out gun assault, scouts, and logi's but should avoid sentinels (racial, bonus can nerf your damage output) and tanks. Having a speed advantage by not stacking armor might be the key to avoiding bad situations as a commando. If you choose a suit with one Hi, it probably should be a damage mod and be sure to pick a suit that matches which weapons you're comfortable with. Don't pick a suit and not use its weapon/racial bonus.
1. Pick a weapon 2. Pick suit to match 3. Use dam mod as Hi slot
If you care to check skill tree 2.0 weapons for more possible options.
See, this is the issue I have with that: I like combat rifles, submachine guns, and mass drivers. I mean, I really like them. But I am Gallente. I feel like I should probably be using Gallente suits, in addition to the fact that I like armor tanking. Minmatar suits all seem to give up more survivability than I am comfortable with. Unless assault rifles get a substantial buff, I would feel pigeonholed into either using a suit a don't like or a weapon I don't want.
I also very much like sniper rifles, but I suppose that is a different issue.
So what do I do? Roll Gallente with Minmatar weapons, thus sacrificing a damage boost? Or run Minmatar and be irritated about my lack of ehp? |

Aero Yassavi wrote: Here is another thing with Dust, people think if they don't use their racial bonuses then they are wasting the suit. The racial bonuses are there if you want to be highly specialized, but nothing is forcing you to use it. All suits are getting the class bonus which you can use with a wide array of things. Don't think 25% faster reloading means anything? Think again, it's pretty huge. So go ahead and use a combat rifle and mass driver with a Gallente Commando if you wish, you'll still be able to fire both weapons with minimal downtime while reloading.
That's the min-maxer in me, you can thank all my years of hardcore PvP and Raiding in WoW for that. I've retired from WoW, but old habits die hard. I feel like if I'm not taking my gear and weapons to the max, then there has to be a better way to do it. And all the Commando suits will get the reload speed bonus, not just the Gallente. So that doesn't really persuade me to go that route.
Unless Assault Rifles are no good in 1.8, I'll probably end up rolling Gallente Commando with AR + MD. Armor tanking + passive armor reps + RP factor will end up pushing me back into AR for the damage bonus. Because don't forget, since damage mods are allegedly getting nerfed when 1.8 drops, the passive damage bonus will be all that much more beneficial. Throw a complex mod on top of the passive "complex mod" on top of some points in proficiency and that will be a dirrrtty assault rifle (20-35% dmg bonus says HEYYOOO). No matter which one gets used. CreoDron Breach AR say what?

Yep. Pretty much this. If I could get my hands on a Gallente sniper rifle and/or area denial weapon I'd be so happy I'd...I'd...well I don't really know what I would do. |

I could see a Commando though with Mass Driver and Precision Rifle for a solo type player holding an area. Most other combos seem unfavourable vs the other races.
This combo is something I am extremely excited about. I'm really hoping to get some news about the precision rifle at fanfest.
A question for the lore junkies...is the precision rifle meant to be a Matari sniper rifle? A long-range tac AR? It's possible it may fit very well into the play style of a support commando such as myself.

Eventhough on paper the Min Commando is only slightly quicker than the other commando suits whilst sacrificing eHP to all the other races its bonuses are the best boosting both the combat rifle and the swarm launcher.
Back to being only slightly quicker, I'm guessing you've not noticed the stamina regen, despite being a fat suit it can sprint for a much higher propotion of time and cover the ground much quicker than you would expect.
The M-1 commando has allowed me to put together a cheap av suit with Proto SL, basic combat rifle that fares much better than running a proto SL on a bpo suit for similar cost with more eHP; a damage boost; faster reload as well as being able to swap the SMG for a combat rifle. Swarms are Caldari. I recall being told that there would be no bonus to swarms for the Matari Commandos for that reason. May have been wrong, but just thought I would mention it. It's worth looking into. |
