First let me say that the ISK faucet mechanic in PC is broken, along with maybe 70% of the other game systems and mechanics. Also agree with you completely about the overreaction to 'protostomping', Joseph.
With CCP there will always be risk/reward mechanics and the corps that can handle the risk and come out on top will be fabulously wealthy. This is by design and i wouldn't want to see it change.
What i would like to see change is:
1) That there be several different families of high-risk geopolitically important strategic resources, each requiring different expertise and mechanics to control.
2) That the games(EVE, DUST, later Valkyrie) always support small-gang(squad) modes the allow smaller player entities to meaningfully affect the endgame geopolitics(by intercepting or interdicting profits, by requiring increased attention/manpower from the strategic-resource-rich corps).
Imagine a Planetary conquest mechanic for DUST like this:
Let's say your corp owns a PC district. Imagine we could improve income from districts by building up the industrial infrastructure, but that the price to be paid for this is that rogue drones are attracted to industrial activity. If these drones are left unchecked they will at first reduce profits and eventually destroy that expensive industrial infrastructure(CCP could use the same mechanic with hisec Planetary Infrastucture to generate merc PVE contracts paid for by players).
So now you and your mercs have to do drone suppression missions on your planet to protect your investment so it can pay for that expensive proto-fueled victory that won you the district in the first place. But that's time-consuming and ties up/burns out your crew when they should be used for defending investments or harrassing enemies or building up political capital by helping out allies. Enter player-issued mercenary drone-suppression contracts. Now smaller corps or even 6-merc squads can fill that role for you.
Now imagine that the amount of drone activity on a planet scales geometrically with the number of districts held/industrialized by DUST mercs: There's lots of work for everybody, there's a natural, immersive mechanic that puts a damper on over-expansion, there's a ton of social interaction between elite PVP corps and smaller PVE corps still learning the ropes.
Now that's just one mechanic(drones) for one resource(clones). Add in other strategic resources(DUST-unique or EVE-shared or EVE-synergistic) and a different maintenance mechanic and we will be rocking hard-fought ops forever on the planets of New Eden.
P.S. To close the PVP-PVE circle, imagine a wealthy PVP corp openly or secretly antagonistic to your PVP corp's expansion activities. Imagine them post an anti-DMC(Drone Maintenance Contract) of their own, for a small gang to invade DMCs in progress to scare off your PVE subcontractors, with the drones hostile to both.
Fun times =)
I support SP rollover.
