Pretty simple two stage idea.
1. Player in tank-esc artillery positions him/herself at the back of the map (assuming no red line). Has to deploy meaning unable to move or defend itself at close range.
2. Infantry unit in battlefield has Laser guide equipment, targets area for bombardment.
Some side notes.
- Very slow rate of fire/ one shot reload. - Takes a while for artillery to acquire target data. - If infantry dies target data is lost. - Can see a strong red laser line identifying the infantry providing strike location, easy for an organised team to counter.
Other ideas.
- You would be able to hear the shell coming, knowing when to take cover.

I like the idea, but there is a drawback which I don't really like... if I deploy my Howitzer, I MUST wait until someone gives me the firing coordinates, which could result in waiting for a very long time.
I'd rather call the Artillery vehicle, and once deployed it doesn't need anything else than giving out coordinates with a L.A.M., allowing me (or anyone else) to go back supporting the rest of the squad.
With your idea, I imagine you could accept everyone designating a target, including "blueberries", but with my idea you can limit the data-connection to your team only. The Howitzer would work like a stationary turret, so there is no self-destruction like vehicles.
The other point I thought is that there is little to no benefit in using an artillery-vehicle if I can call a MLT tank with an antimatter cannon and blast away targets from 500m away.
I'm assuming you would use the LAM just like the Repair Tool, but unlike the RT you create a laser-beam...

I see what you're aiming for. But at this point in time, what would be the purpose of such a weapon?
There's nothing but hostile Tanks or turrets to destroy at the moment, and Artillery is generally extreme long range, which we don't have in this game.
This would make an excellent addition when the maps are much bigger, and there are stationary targets that need to be taken out, such as field generators or defence towers. (Skirmish 1.0 would have loved this kind of weapon.)

Mmm... you're right stating that artillery is usually meant for long-range strikes, but sometimes even in short maps there are 1~2 enemy buildings you cannot reach even with tanks; or you could strike enemies hiding below the MCC...
So, even now there are a few times where the artillery could be useful, but I see the best result would be in much bigger maps.
Anyway, we could "simply" solve this by having different types of "artillery", let me write a bunch of examples:
- BASE Artillery: 300m range // 4 x 1500HP rounds // reload = 2 min - BREACH Artillery: 200m range // 3 x 2500HP rounds // reload = 3 min - ASSAULT Artillery: 500m range // 4 x 1000HP rounds // reload = 2,5 min
Ok, the names are just a mere indication, but they point out the differences among the existing models. So, if you want to hit harder an enemy position, you'll have to place your artillery closer, then you'll still need to aim with LAM before unleashing some mayhem...

This could be an ability of the Command Suit, which could manipulate the WP balance at an advanced degree over simply calling Orbital's at 2500 WP.
I'd love to have it, and it warrants further discussion.

Wouldn't it be sweet if this was how orbital strikes worked? That would eliminate the issues we currently have with the eve player taking too long to drop it.
