Does anyone know what methods CCP uses to ensure game balance? I know at one point they said they were rebalancing the mass driver based on an "internal play test" (which was a bit insulting at the time)
I want to know, because I have a hunch that whatever methods they are using could be improved with a simple discussion on the matter.
There is obviously a problem. Anyone who had played chromosome could tell you there was a problem with the power of the laser rifle at the time. Then the exact same problem showed up with the AR TAC. Then the exact same problem showed up with the rail rifle.
Another example being the plasma cannon. Nearly the entire player base has been calling for a buff since it's release. Yet it has yet to receive even the smallest of buffs. It is obviously underpowered against infantry AND vehicles. It could have received a buff in any one of the patches, but has not.
They also have had a tendency to overbuff/overnerf things, usually at the same time. Nerfing AV AND buffing tanks etc.

Problem with usage figure is that what is popular isn't necessarily good. Mass Driver being a decent example. It was NEVER as good as people wanted to think it was. It got lumped in with flaylock and contact gernades as FOTM because it supplemented them, and people love playing like little *****s and camping on roofs.
As far as CPMs go, only few of them play at a high level, or with people who play at a high level. Mass Driver has always been CRAZY OVERPOWERED against people in standard suits and it has always been usable but difficult in high level matches(until auto aim). That being said, I think CPMs are the most sensible method of balance of the bunch. |

Like I said, there is obviously a problem in their method and a little transparency and tweaking would go a long way in helping this game return to playability. I would say that Flaylocks and contact gernades were preferable to this long range madness that we currently have. |

Im not sure. I think there would be more choices for long range instant death weapons, but close range weapons would be just as screwed, if not more so. |

Either way, get used to it. They won't fix everything in one patch. They also could have hot fixed the damage. The imbalance is needed.
I am not asking them to fix it all in one big patch. They complex nature of balance makes that nearly impossible. I am asking them to make small changes with EVERY patch, to obvious balance issues.
I fully expect and hope that rail rifles are the best weapon at extreme range. However, it is too powerful at this range, and is too powerful up close.
Plasma cannon shpws a good example of how their method of balance isn't working. They could have made any number of fixes in the many patches since the release of it. They haven't. At the very least they could have given it a very small buff every patch, since it has been clear for some time that it has no real use. Still nothing
Im not asking for parity. I DO want asymmetrical tactics and strategy (The only thing that should be semi-symmetrical is map design). |
