Hey everyone I am new to dust and to this forum, although I am not new to EVE. If some of what I am about to say is littered throughout this forum I apologize but this is part review and part request. I'm a new dust player and here is my initial take on the game.
Pros: -The depth of customization is awesome. I can't think of any other game where you have such a deep skill tree and have so many options available. In my opinion this game destroys every current FPS game out there. BF4, you got nothing on this game. CoD.. puhLEEZE don't insult me. -Tying this game into the eve universe, where your actions matter on a bigger, grander scale is a very impressive leap in gaming premise. Kudos to CCP for being the first to tie two totally different MMO's into a single premise. -Graphics, sound, controls. I'm happy to see that you have included support for not only PS devices but also keyboard/mouse support. Despite the early reviews of this game I think the graphics are very well done, although I do believe that the landscapes of the planets themselves should be a little more lush, even if it means fighting in a canyon or some crazy mountainous area as opposed to a nearly flat landscape for every map.
Cons: -My biggest complaint so far. The game has been out for a while now and a lot of the players have advanced armour/weapon/mod sets. Being someone new and even with the 500K sp starter, it's extremely difficult to "win" battles against these players. In the past CCP you have played around with newcomers SP and skillsets when it came to EVE. I'm not asking for that here. A lot of people will argue with me that I need to find community, work with ppl, get on comms etc. but the point is, the fact that a newbie is so vastly outgunned is almost instantaneously deal breaking. I can unload 2 whole magazines of the starter rifle into a medium, mid tier frame and not kill the guy, where as he only has to shoot me 3 times with his scrambler rifle. It's to be expected that these players are obviously more powerful because they have played longer, won more battles etc. But I would imagine that a lot of veterans of this game didn't even really have this same problem starting out in their games as I do now, since when this game was launched everyone was at the same level, and no one really knew the maps back then either. Eliminating all contingencies of people knowing the maps, knowing the tiers, knowing what's good for what situations, understanding what it's like to have a brand new character have to drop into this death trap warzone and not have the equipment to survive (even with the spent 500K sp), it makes coming to this game very cumbersome and not much fun.
You had this same problem with EVE, you had to capture more of a market with your addition of PVE. EVE was purely PVP for a long while too and you realized then that you had to grow and expand your market and make it fun and playable for people who enjoy less of a risk but also less of a reward. Some people are more casual gamers and not super twitch factor players, but still like these kinds of games. Some people enjoy slaying first person shooters but in the campaign mode. I know you have PVE on the list of things you want to do, but please make it a priority. I'm amazed that there wasn't some sort of PVE launched with this game. I read a post in this forum where someone said even to defend mining sites with dust players against enemy drones. I want to be able to be more of a use to my carebear corp up in high sec by being a first strike team on that drone hive, disabling it's shield or defenses before the EVE players can launch their attack in a L4 mission. I want to share the experience and the isk and the online experience with EVE players more so than dropping into some random map on some random world and fighting over some resource for which I'm not even sure affects the EVE world in any way whatsoever. I can't "feel" my presence as a part of the EVE world in this game, and I can't help but get my ass handed to me by the vets running shiny scrambler rifles and their top tier frames. |

Here is a scenario I would like you to consider:
I am a DUST player. Just yesterday, the highsec corp I run with loaded me and 3 other soldiers into one of their covert drop ships. When we warped up to the null gate I looked out the port hole and there they were, 3 drakes, a tengu, and the mother of all evil, a Nightmare, just sitting there waiting for us to arrive. "Begin the attack". I could hear our FC's voice over the ships comm system. No sooner did he utter the words our scout ship lined down the gate and we were off. We arrived on the other side and met heavy resistance but the cloaking field of this specialized ship was engaged immediately. I could see the ships on the other side of the gate were going to have a tough time making their way to the target. But the target, which was a Sansha fortress protected by the drone hive-mind, was our prize, our trophy. We as DUST soldiers are a part of the first strike team hired by our corp to infiltrate beasts like these.
Our scout ship landed on the outer hull of the fortress and cut a hole for us soldiers to make our way inside. We too were in for a fierce battle. The laser fire almost immidately started pummeling through the freshly cut hole. We slowly destroyed the drones defending our landing site but there was an entire fortress to infiltrate. I looked at a console on the wall of one of the corridors available to us and found our path to the defense control room. "This way soldiers", the voice of our team leader echo'd through our helmets. Making our way to the defense control room we had to work as a team. The enemy was in front, beside and behind us, but we prevailed. We got to the control console and shut down the fortress shields.
"Hit the gate!" the FC shouted. One by one the ships of my corp came through and so began an epic battle. Now here I sit, aboard the same drop ship, except this time we must disable a Guirista transmission relay so our fleet can destroy docked dreadnaught being repaired. We may die, we may fight, but we will always be DUST soldiers. |

That, and tiercide would fix it, you nailed it; nice knowing that we still get new guys. Anyways I assume you already got the intro into New Eden. I guess welcome to dust then. Oh, by the ways, we're called mercenaries, but we just call ourselves mercs. If I see you on the battlefield (within a month's time), if I shoot you in the face, my bad

Sorry last reply to this topic and then I'm done.
What I feel this game has turned into from its original gaming concept is very much like a futuristic battlefield 4. and honestly I just sold my PS4 and my copy of BF4 because I find that style of gaming to be INSANELY boring. What's the definition of insanity? Doing the same thing over and over expecting a different result every time. This game is very much a drop'n die, run'n gun style of CoD and BF4 that I'm sure CCP was trying to prevent. This game as a whole feels extremely unfinished, although polished. It feels like it's lacking 90% of it's content, because let's face it, DUST could do SO MUCH MORE with the concept and the engine, and the idea of being a part of the eve universe. Just read my comment above about the scenario of being a dust player.
When the concept of this game was first introduced I was hoping I would be able to interact with EVE players on a much closer scale. Working with my corp, destroying drones, destroying sansha's, running missions with them. Seeing the inside of their ships. Going to planets where they have planetary structures and seeing the bases they have built. I want DUST to be like that.
What you have created so far is, let's face it, EPIC. Don't get me wrong. I'm not slamming the game at all. I really love the concept, the polish, the idea and the fact that it destroys every other FPS game out there. All I'm saying and asking for is a way for me to be a carebear, especially as a new player, and kill NPC's with a newbie friendly corp, and build my SP and ISK to a point where someday I wouldn't mind trying PVP or joining a low sec corp and fighting for those resources for which DUST players seem to fight for currently.
Thanks for hearing me out everyone, and CCP I hope you are reading this, seriously. I think in the back of every dust players mind, this is the concept they really wanted for DUST, although like I keep saying this game is already so awesome it's hard for anyone who likes the drop'n-gun style of game to not love it already. |

My experience is vastly different. Being new here to the game as well. I don't see it being flawed. The challenge is fun to overcome. |

LOL thanks for the welcome :) And not to worry, I have had plenty already shoot me in the face, and for the record I have had a kill or 3 that were headshots :) I'm not a totally suck dust player, just a mostly suck dust player :) |

I also find it entertaining that two brand new people have two vastly different experiences in this game. Still I agree critiques and an engaged community can help refine that system. |

Tiericide would do wonders to help with NPE, and then a much more explanatory tutorial that would explain important **** like how Skills Unlock Gear, but also many skills have awesome bonuses, or that its a good idea to focus on modules over guns and suits.
Tiericide FTW! Plus that tutorial stuff I guess.

I got into this game shortly after the open beta, well, opened. It wasn't as bad as it is now then, but it was still pretty rough, so I definitely feel your pain and I agree with you 100%. Dust needs something to lull newer people into the gameplay, rather than just throwing them to the wolves after a few academy matches. Hopefully CCP will include something eventually to make it easier for the newbies, because I'm sure they're losing players who aren't willing to stick around after getting protostomped into the ground.
Sometimes I miss never seeing tanks in a battle... then I remember the mystical flying soma, and I can't help but smile.

This game is still in beta technically. Right now it's just a free lobby shooter with above average customization but is dumbed down alot from eve which is unfortunate.

Yeah I remember seeing this and I was stoked as hell for it. Also notice are the ground based missile turrets firing at the MCC. Back then the idea of the null cannon was something you could capture to fire down the barrage of beams granted there was an actual EVE player in orbit. Seems they nixed a lot :( The original idea of this game was to have EVE players provide serious support for the dust players and the two groups of players would work closely together to provide a combat experience, fighting for a planet, or a moon, or some other resource. They have since taken all that out and now capturing a null cannon just shoots a piddly little missile at the MCC. Notice the missile con trails as they exited the ground-based launchers in that video. It even LOOKED a lot more like actual warefare. Also promised was the boarding of titans and a bunch of other stuff. Well that was like years ago and I don't understand how they put combat ready flight vehicles in the game and all this other awesome stuff and it didn't make it into their ps3 release. CCP obviously spent a lot of time getting the game to that point and then for some reason they totally scrapped it all and it's been what 15 months since DUST released and it's virtually the same as it was on release day.
Getting CCP to hear suggestions is like trying to hit a brick of steel with a rubber mallet. They get hell bent on making things look pretty and go off on wild tangeants when they should be listening to their player base and the needs of their players. They end up with a lot of half finished projects implemented into the game. Look at in-game station walking for eve players. Well they got as far as a useless office space or bedroom suite or whatever it is for each player and now the station walking thing is on the back-burner. From what I saw from the fanfests and all the hype they released on youtube and on their website, I was totally excited to see this game released only to be disappointed by it when I loaded it up for the first time the other day. I keep saying that what it is as a run'n gun drop style random matchmaking combat FPS is about the best there is out there, but the problem is that this style of gaming has been beaten to death sooo badly by so many other game makers out there, for example battlefield and CoD.
I don't understand why they are coming out with a tutorial and guidance system for new players as a way to put a bandaid on the real problem of a severe lack of content. It's not going to help, all the "this is how you point a gun and shoot" in the world isn't going to help the fact that they are dropping someone into a sandbox shooter and the end result is always going to be the same. What we need is PVE and the ability to have EVE players hire DUST players into their corps and run missions with them in high sec, and have a LOT more interaction with dust players. Keep what has been done so far for sure, since fighting for planet resources and such still plays a huge role in low sec and claiming a region or a system, of course. The game as it stands DEFINITELY has its place in the eve world. But they have tunnel vision concerning dust and I don't think they realize that making a bunch of tweaks to the game, allowing for skill re-specs and so forth isn't going to add the desparately needed content/interaction with the EVE world. They need to put the whole project on hold and take a step back and ask themselves "how can we TRULY marry DUST with EVE and get the two groups of players interacting, and making DUST players feel like they are actually fighting for something". |

Yeah actually I got myself into a heavy suit. So right now I have the suit, enhanced armor plates x2 and the weapon damage mod. Slowly but surely I was going to get my core skills up there, especially the armor amount, reduced scan profile, increased hack speed, reload speed, etc. I think I'm going to join a corp and see if it helps make a difference. I really do enjoy this game I just hope all of my above wishes come true :) |
