Much has been said about the need for a more in depth new player experience. This is something I could not agree with more. This game absolutely needs to help teach new players about some of the fundamentals of this game so that they can survive. A boot camp of sorts.
It has been a long time since I went through the process of starting out from scratch so I decided to give it a try. I started a new character and he is now at around 1 million SP and about 110,000 War Points. In doing so, there are a couple points that I would like to share with you that might help you make it in New Eden.
#1 - Armor is your friend as a new player. For this, I prefer the Gallente Militia suit out of all of them. It allows you to use two militia armor plates without any PG/CPU skills. This will be quite helpful as far as survival.
#2 - Ambush, despite its prevalance of proto squads and tanks right now, is the fastest way for you to make SP and ISK. It is also the best way for you to gain WP if you use Uplinks.
#3 - Uplinks are your best friend as a rookie in Dust. You can get to advanced pretty quickly which will allow you to have two active at all times. As a new player, you wont be able to deal damage like a lot of the veterans which means that you are best served in a tactical role. Uplinks are great in ambush matches because they can either allow your team to continue to push the enemy or give them the chance to regroup if they are pinned. This makes uplinks one of the most valuable pieces of equipment on the battlefield and a great WP earner.
The 2 most important rules of uplinks: 1 - Always place them in cover. You want someone who just spawns in to be able to get their bearings before entering the battle. For this, they need to be in cover. This can be behind a container or around the corner from where the battle is taking place. 2 - High ground is the best ground. Whether attacking or defending, high ground can make the difference in a battle. It gives your team cover and forces the enemy to come to you on your terms. Having an uplink in a low spot means that the enemy can create a kill zone for the uplink from higher ground anyone that spawns.
(note: the second most useful equipment are nanohives which are especially crucial if you are defending a specific area)
#4 - Take advantage of defensible locations. Open field means that you are prey to getting swarmed by the enemy and are highly prone to a tank. A defensible area will have cover and choke points that forces the enemy to come at you one or two at a time rather than a full blitz. The more that you can limit their ability to approach you, the better.
#5 - Squads with mics are your friend. Everyone doesnt have to be the best killer but communication and strategy can help your survival rate immensely. It allows you to be notified of where the enemy is and to focus fire on targets. While you might be at a disadvantage against a vet with proto gear, two people firing at him/her will take down the proto suit quite quickly.
#6 - After you have your uplinks to 3, max out your weapon of choice. Your goal should be to get it to proficiency 3. You do not need to use much beyond the base weapon but prof 3 will add to the damage that it does which can get you more kills and help you survive more engagements.
Finally, dont be allured by higher tier suits and weapons from the get go. They might help you survive a little longer but they also cost much more and will dry up your ISK reserves quite quickly. I ran a militia suit with two militia plates, a base weapon and advanced uplinks which totaled around 5k ISK per suit.
Notes about me and my experience: I am not the best gun in AE so dont feel that gungame was the determining factor in what I was able to do. The best assets you can develop as a new player are awareness of what is going on and knowledge of the maps.
I was able to get to 110k WP in less than a week and a half running only ambushes. During this time, I had a 1.75 KDR and about 770 kills. I never ran anything but a militia gallente medium suit with a base weapon. During this time, I was able go accumulate around 27 million ISK. That would put me at 100 million in about a month's time. I never backed out of a match even if I was being stomped by stacked squads or tank spam. In these instances, I would usually try to get out of fire and place uplinks so that my team could escape being pinned in.
