ASD fly a lot nice than the MLT STD versions. Flying isone of those things that you gofrom being **** to good in a weird time. My 1st dropship flew 20ft and ended upside down under a pipe, within a week and some ISKs I was getting flying like a champ inmy incubus then getting FG'd down.
1st learn basic taking off, landing. Then move onto ******* with turrets, get a guunner in you gorgon or viper fly to enemy redline and start a fight with a turret, then not just escape, try screw around with the turret, learn how to either get sky high fast, or get down low low and behind crap. After that take too tight city maps, fly through them fast as you can, then slow and through tight areas.
All in all though, you will lose dropships learning, especially with 1.7's onslaught of **** tankers. run a starter fit, with an uplink on it. Set your self missions to get that uplink somewhere the enemy don't want you to.
I stick my weiner in two buns and and then give it the gas

It sounds like that's a big part of your problem based on your description. I suggest you consciously apply a lighter hand.
Your enemy is pilot induced oscillation which is tipping your ship too far, then over correcting to throw it further in the opposite direction, followed by over correcting further, followed by a crash. Start by not tipping so far in the first place, then consciously stop your corrective control right before your ship passes through the recovery attitude. Most beginners hold full opposite control until well after the ship has recovered, causing a panic response to fix the new emergency. This is true. I use to be horrible but I believe that I am getting better and between Judge's videos and just taking steps and not trying to do to much but moving gradually and just getting experience will help. Dropship piloting is by far the hardest thing to do on this game and I'm glad.

I hadn't considered it flying by inertia, was looking at it differently. Now that I've put that into my head I'm doing a hell of a lot better. Not crashing nearly as much able to avoid buildings and make course corrections. Just wish people would stop shooting me. Clearly my guns aren't pew pewing so leave me alone :P |

I know the frustration. I was practicing deep in my redline when some jerk ran up and hacked a blue turret right on our line which proceeded to cost me an ADS.
I strongly suggest you play around with both the "Lunar Lander" and "Asteroids" games in your web browser. Both of them will train your reflexes ISK free, and the latter will give you practice in evading RDVs. Just picture each asteroid as a drunken RDV and you will get a feel for the start of each match. |

15 minutes and already quitting? We had one guy on the forums claim to be an expert the moment he called in a Dropship (yeah, right) but most of us spent about 100 mil ISK and weeks to learn how to not embarrass ourselves. Just avoid the militia ships since their automatic stabilization will mess you up.

Yeah, your ship is a VTOL craft and all your advanced maneuvers will require mastering that inertia. Give it more gas when taking off and starting to accelerate across the field. Just be careful when going straight up or backwards. There always seems to be an MCC to run into.
Also, afterburners are your friend and will help you get out of trouble when people start shooting at you. The safest place is to go straight up to the flight ceiling. Once there you can take a moment to evaluate the situation, let any active modules recover and then do a power dive to where you want to be.

Fraceska wrote:So I've been a prolific poster upon my return. I have this alt with 572k SP. I'm pretty happy with my logi and combat roles don't interest me at all. So when I came back and got to put those SP into new places I put them into vehicles (didn't get very far) but I suck at flying. I truly do. I mean it is bad. I can take off. Probably land if the ground is flat enough. I'm all good until people start shooting at me. Then I freak out and forget everything! Meaning they generally hit me once and I do the rest of the crashing. So sad, so very sad.
So any tips on flying the bricks? I mean dropships. This is like 20,000 AD you'd think they would've made flying easy!
You do not have redbull therefore you do not have wings. As a result you can not fly..

Just wanted to lend support! Keep at it--I must have lost 60+ dropships just learning how to take off and land, and those were all AUR variants since I was too dense to realized that militia variants existed. I guess in hindsight, though, it was probably a good idea since it forced me to learn sans auto-leveling.
Now, I can land on a dime--can get to the top of the ringed tower on the Skim Junction map, land, and recall my DS about 90% of the time now.
Can't wait for pilot suits!

All of my SP went into getting the basic dropship since I only had that. Now I have no suits or weapons. So if I'm not calling down ships it seems like a waste. But I can't generate more WP/SP without fighting but I'm just in militia gear :( |

There needs to be a sign somewhere that training into dropships is best done after you have a decent infantry/money-making fit. They are the most money intensive thing to get into right now. Go ahead and get a basic Incubus with missiles fit if you want but then I'd detour back to infantry for a few million SP. You can call in basic and assault dropships when feeling rich or you want to practice.

If you're on your own, just get a militia suit with uplink/s and put them in high positions (that make sense) It's important though not to put uplinks everywhere high, since there are a lot of places where high uplinks are a disadvantage, and the defending team can easily pic the guys dropping from the roof and so on.

Something I discovered while trying to recover from a 3 ADS loss early on... Stick a militia repair tool on a starter fit and play ambush for an hour, even with losses it's an easy 1 mil ISK. Also, placing uplinks once you're able to reliably land on roofs...just don't stick them too high or people have a tendency to camp.
Not new, just new to you.

if you don't learn to fly MLT you're gonna have a very expensive learning period with ADS. only a noob or tryhard calls an ADS at the beginning of the map only to have it shot down in the next 30 seconds. you save your ADS for after you've flown the map with MLT and have a feel for how it's going to pan out. you don't just throw your ADS blindly into a battle hoping it doesn't get shot down.

Ivy Zalinto wrote:Fraceska wrote:Part of the problem I think is the delay. I tap L1 for thrust and I tap left stick forward to put the nose down and generate forward moment. But for some reason there is a delay in moving forward. this is because its an inertia based craft. It has to build momentum and move the ship. Regular dropships are much heavier than the assault's and it is obvious when you get them ( first time in an assault dropship I hit the afterburner on takeoff expecting the same flight pattern. Smashed into the mcc not a second later. 300k gone XD) But yes, the ship is piloted by literally shifting the weight around.
I did a guide some time back HERE
But what you want to look for to help you steer is the direction of the thrusters. That will tell you what direction you are going in despite what you are doing with the controls or what direction the body is pointing. Later you will have a better sense of what the thrusters are doing by looking at the body.
Watch Yawing too much. That tends to turn your ship but doesn't apply much momentum so you swing around more instead of quickly changing to the direction you are actually trying to go. Use Roll then apply a little Yaw as needed to turn sharply. Yaw is better when you are moving slower or hovering. It can get you into trouble when going fast.
Rommel, you magnificent bastard, I read your book!
