So I've been a prolific poster upon my return. I have this alt with 572k SP. I'm pretty happy with my logi and combat roles don't interest me at all. So when I came back and got to put those SP into new places I put them into vehicles (didn't get very far) but I suck at flying. I truly do. I mean it is bad. I can take off. Probably land if the ground is flat enough. I'm all good until people start shooting at me. Then I freak out and forget everything! Meaning they generally hit me once and I do the rest of the crashing. So sad, so very sad.
So any tips on flying the bricks? I mean dropships. This is like 20,000 AD you'd think they would've made flying easy! |

I find it easier to fly with South paw scheme. I forgot to switch it on my alt once and just stood there for like 10 seconds not knowing what I was doing wrong lol.
There was a really cool guy who helped me out back in 1.5 and he was really patient. He even supplied me with his ships, too!
I payed him 1 mil and a half to return the favor. I also give isk now to people learning how to fly thanks to him. If you see me anywhere, hit me up and I'll try my best to help you.
I think I'm still in Scouts United. |

First off, check out Judge Rhadamanthus' videos on dropship flying. He has excellent videos to show you how to fly. Link to the first video in the series is here, and you can navigate to the others from there.
My personal advice, stay deep in your redline to practice flying. Don't fly over the battlefield until you have decent control over your dropship. Also, skill into dropships enough to fly standard dropships. Militia version have an autolevel feature that throws off how all other dropships fly. So go standard for practice.
Best PVE idea I've seen.

I've been trying to get better about evasive maneuvering against rails. I fly low but focus on a flight path and altitude with enough room to hit the decrease thrust button and quickly drop down into a low or blocked area that breaks LoS while still keeping speed and then skim the ground and come up and fly quickly away to a safer part of the map.
I still have problems dipping and not gaining my altitude back before I hit the ground too hard and burn. This usually happens when The terrain is inclining again in the crater areas of the newer maps.

I only had enough SP for vehicle Command 3 and Dropship Operation 3 so I'm flying just the Grimsnes. Thing is I didn't have enough SP to do anything else. So I don't really gain WP or much ISK :( |

Your bones are to heavy. Your extremities, that could serve as wings, do not produce enough lift, meaning that, even if your bones were light enough, you could still not achieve flight. You have no tail rudder. Even if you did posses a tail rudder, you could not sufficiently conceal your legs to make your body aerodynamically viable.
I think that about sums it up.

Becoming good at flying requires experience to know how to respond to combat situations. Your going to loose a lot of isk becoming a pilot, that part is unavoidable. Dropships have a larger redline than ground units, go out into the neutral red behind a mountain and practice flying. Watch judge radamantheus' tutorial videos and join 1st airborne chat channel, a lot of really good pilots hang out there and will (sometimes) answer your questions and squad with you if they have time. |

This. Judge is a dropship god and everything he says is great advice.
Personally, now that I've tried it, I can't fly anything other than an ADS, and really a Python. It simply puts every other dropship to shame- everything else feels so sluggish. In a Python, you can feel exactly what every little adjustment is doing immediately because of its rapid response to your inputs. It has improved my flying much more quickly than practicing in the standards.
You can skill into ADSes on an alt and have enough money to practice flying them in the Academy- no one will be forging or railtanking at you, and generally there won't even be swarms hassling you. Just don't fight and accidentally earn enough WP to graduate, and you can have a nice safe practice environment to practice maneuvering around. |

Honestly the dropships were a little hard to get used to, but after a while I got used to the control scheme...of course first thing this did was when I went to play battlefield was roll my chopper in midair and kill me...I actually whimpered.
Now a word of advice...Somehow I find the regular dropships more survivable. It could be the level of assault dropship that I have but with a good gunner (my dedicated gunner death shade) I still score well even when playing about with the dropships. Of course, people may have seen me lately just landing on reds...dont judge me, its fun!

The main problem of all student pilots, both real and simulated, is over controlling.
It sounds like that's a big part of your problem based on your description. I suggest you consciously apply a lighter hand.
Your enemy is pilot induced oscillation which is tipping your ship too far, then over correcting to throw it further in the opposite direction, followed by over correcting further, followed by a crash. Start by not tipping so far in the first place, then consciously stop your corrective control right before your ship passes through the recovery attitude. Most beginners hold full opposite control until well after the ship has recovered, causing a panic response to fix the new emergency. |

Part of the problem I think is the delay. I tap L1 for thrust and I tap left stick forward to put the nose down and generate forward moment. But for some reason there is a delay in moving forward. |

Regular dropships are much heavier than the assault's and it is obvious when you get them ( first time in an assault dropship I hit the afterburner on takeoff expecting the same flight pattern. Smashed into the mcc not a second later. 300k gone XD)
But yes, the ship is piloted by literally shifting the weight around.

I've found that flying a dropship is a team effort. You need gunners and a spotter to watch out for tanks and other anti vehicle. I switched over to the old Oceania server to practice(not even sure that's still a thing), cause there was no one else on it. Once CCP creates a private match option, then you can safely practice the aerial ballet, learn the moves, and even make your own. Until then, the red line is your best bet. Also try to have someone else who flies with you when you practice to give you tips, and show you how it's done. Never be afraid to ask for help. Most dropship pilots will gladly help out a new pilot, because that's 1 more person who understands the difficulty of flying. Also, fly with what your comfortable fitting. I fly caldari exclusively, because 1) caldari dropships look badass, and 2) if you crash, and your shields go down, you can instantly reboot them with a shield booster.

The maneuver I really struggle with (when I'm practicing in a broken match with no opponents) is landing on a small target like a silo. I tend to overshoot it, nose up + thrust and then overshoot the other way, gaining too much altitude. I keep going back and forth this way for an embarrassingly long time. It's like watching a kid with a learner's permit trying to parallel park. When I see skilled dropship pilots like Judge going from max speed to spiraling around and gently touching down exactly where they intended it blows my mind. I have endless respect for talented pilots.
Best PvE idea ever!

1. Press L1 to get alttitude. 2. Move R3 to turn wherever you want to aim. 3. Move L3 veeeeeeeeeeeeery slightly to accelerate.
To land:
4. Move L3 backwards veeeeeeery slowly to deccelerate. 5. Press L2 to descend. 6. Turn with R3 is you need so.
7. Practise this a hundred times. It worked for me. 8. God bless you, cause dropshiing is hard as hell. Just be patient with it. |

So your problem is definately over controlling. You are holding control input well after you ship has been placed in an attitude to move how you want, so when it does start moving its now headed right into the ground.
Try to consciously anticipate what your ship will do once it overcomes inertia and neutralize the sticks much earlier.
