I'd personally prefer if Sentinels were limited to Heavy weapons, but that won't even be in the consideration set until there's a full complement of fattie boomsticks.
So RR Sentinels, consider your fat selves in the clear until 2016.

Indeed. It's mostly RR and the odd Duvolle Fattie. You can tell the ones who have been doing it for a while, still plugging away with that plain old ARGǪ
Scrambler Rifle Heavies are ever rarer. Which is odd, since it carries the most damage without needing equipment resupply.
Oh well. More fodder for my HMG.

I'd gladly give up the ability to use light weapons for a full compliment of heavy weaponry. It's pathetic we STILL only have the two;expecially considering how many light weapons and side arms CCP has taken the time to devise, code, render, and otherwise implement.
Then again, the only light weapon I ever used in earnest on my heavy (a couple joke fits aside) was a Swarm Launcher. Was. It sucks now.. :-( |

I'm gonna make yet another comparison to EVE here. Bear with me. (Bare? I never get that one right.)
In EVE, Battleships have no arbitrary restriction to only fit Large weapons. No one fits Small or Medium weapons because it would be of absolutely no benefit at all. Likewise, Frigates can fit Medium weapons. No one does that to because it would be so fitting intensive (and the guns would be unbonused) that your ship would be less than useless. The freedom to do so is there, but (essentially) no one does it because there is no benefit.
In DUST, that's a bit more complicated of a concept to translate. The comparison doesn't stand 100% between Frigate - Light Suit, Cruiser - Medium Suit, and Battleship - Heavy Suit, or between Small - Sidearm, Medium - Light, and Large - Heavy. But the concept can translate fairly well, and here's how.
First, there will need to be a decent choice in heavy weapons. Second, heavy weapons will need bonuses on basic heavy frames and sentinels that make them much more worthwhile than a light weapon.
Boom, issue basically addressed.

I agree completely, although I want to keep my sidearm. Nothing worse than destroying some noobs tank to have him jump out at the last second and try to get away. mwa hahaha. submachine gun for the win.
I don't use light weapons though, so I'm not really giving anything up. The way people keep complaining about it though, I'm tempted to try it.

My thoughts on the "issue":
Dust is largely about customizing your fit and creating your own role within the parameters of your suit (CCP often uses the example of a heavy sniper). Removing the ability to equip light weapons on heavies would ruin that, and not make sense anyway "oh no, this weapon is too light, I can't carry it".
The heavy suit itself is balanced by low sprint, low strafe, low stamina, no equipment slots, low scanning abilities, huge signature profile, and huge hitbox to counter the HP they have over medium frames; therefore, I don't see why they should only be limited to heavy weapons.
The RR heavy issue is really a product of the RR's poor balancing, not the heavy's ability to use light weapon. Basic heavies and sentinels should not be nerfted because there are problems with one weapon (also applies to CR).
Also, it would be extremely unfair to restrict a suit to only 2 primary weapons (only 4 in the foreseeable future; the Gallente and Amarr one are coming at some point).

This is not an issue at all. Assault suits have more speed and can easily use that to gain the advantage on any Sentinel no matter what weapon they're using. However, in other circumstances having that extra speed doesn't mean a lot. It's a trade-off, which situations do you want to be better at? I'm sorry for all you players who want one suit that is good at doing everything.

I went on a murder spree with my Templar ScR free "Commandon't" fit last nightGǪ
Once I got the hang of how many shots I could pop off without overheating, it was a bit terrifying for having zero SP in the weapon.
(Of course, I immediately felt a pang of guilt for not using the HMG or FG instead. I made the sign of the Khumaak and said five Hail Fatties to make up for it.)
KAGEHOSHI Horned Wolf wrote:The RR heavy issue is really a product of the RR's poor balancing, not the heavy's ability to use light weapon. Basic heavies and sentinels should not be nerfted because there are problems with one weapon (also applies to CR).
Almost total agreement there. I just think it'd bring an interesting balance to the game if Basic Heavies could use near everything, but then Sentinels and Commandos each become more specialized to a weapon path. (Heavy and Light, respectively.)
I've seen some good arguments that basic frames should just be removed from the game entirelyGǪ in which case I'd waffle more on my opinion that Sentinels shouldn't use light weapons.
In any case, it's kinda settled: CCP says all fatties get light weapons. And that'll probably lasts for a good long while.

Im not a heavy but this doesnt bother me, its all about diversity, creative fits, and honestly a fattie on open terrain with a rifle is dead, and up close my dren scout out strafes them all day. Bad suit characteristics for rifles ultimately, I mean if its such a great thing why dont great players do it? I see it as a way for noobs to increase ehp and feel safer, I have no problem. I remeber when fl first came out and there was this heavy from an eon corp running dual fl. I thought it was awesome. |

The thing I find strange is 2 fold.
1. You'll often hear people say things along the lines of "there's entire squads running RR heavies." But that's a terrible idea, without uplinks, nanohives an so on your eventually going to get pushed out and the reduction in movment etc can be a real issue. You'd have to end up camping a supply depot. The heavy is a min/max build sacrificing tactical flexibility for tank.
2. We currently have no heavy weapon for the 25m-90m range, some maps are just not set up for CQC. Should heavies have to spec a whole seperate suit just for that so they aren't scrubs? When we finally get a heavy weapon for that range it'll have to be better than any light weapons otherwise what's the point?
Though I will admit the base HP on a cheap heavy is generally >1,200 and that's a lot for std level. But I remember saying that a long time ago. But some of these complaints Ive had come from folks who used to run Cal logi and now run Gal logi so bear that in mind. I never got these complaints when running a ScR. The issue I think is really the RR. I had decided to go rail long before 1.7 dropped because I needed something for open maps but have mothballed it not because the suit is op, but because the rail is.
I'm one of the people who probably helped set this trend, back when 1.7 first dropped I ended up getting ridiculous kills with it so its been deleted from the suits list. |

I had a friend in my squad ripping it up with a Scrambler Pistol on a Sentinel suit this morning. I put the defend order on him and we got 4 Warbarge Strikes.
Are people going to be crying for Heavies not to be able to use sidearms now?
Besides the real problem here is that the Infantry Rifles do as much damage as a HMG in the HMGGÇÖs effective range. Nerf the Infantry Rifles and Heavies will not use them. Problem solved.
Edit: Also, right now the Sentinel and Brick Tanked Logi are the only suits that have a reasonable TTK, so their high Health is disproportionately more important than their low speed. Extend the TTK a bit and the high health becomes a less significant advantage, while their lack of speed becomes a more significant liability.

I think you need to give HMG a shot again, good sir.
It's a ferocious meat grinder now. It reduces everything to a fine red mist inside 20m, and can make CR/RR users cower out to 40m. I'd say it's in a good spot.
Even the Alldin Kans of the world bail out and use different tactics rather than fight toe-to-toe against it.

On my Heavy I do have a Rail Rifle fit.
I use it on open maps, such as Manis Peak domination, when the enemy team is spread out widely with Rail Rifles/Combat Rifles forming a killing field which catches me in a crossfire from multiple angles before I can come close to getting into HMG range of the enemy.
In a slow suit, on open ground, with a short ranged weapon, a Sentinel is virtually useless on foot.
I use the Rail Rifle as a last resort. I will generally try using a LAV to cross the gap first, but when they have 3 or 4 tanks this does not always work.
I basically only use it in situations where I am completely useless without a long range anti infantry weapon. While the Forge Gun can be used for Sniping, it really is not designed for anti infantry work, so unless you are really good with the Forge Gun (I know some people are), there is not really an effective long range Heavy anti infantry weapon available, so I use the Rail Rifle.

The CR is not the best choice for fatties compared to the RR it lacks versatilty you need to get rather close and the limited ammo doesn't make it a good choice for fatties. To be honest I think the CR THE flanking weapon. And flanking is not the biggest strenght of fatties. In a longer frefight the CR is rather bad due to the low ammo count (18 rounds ins't THAT much).
