As i have heard a lot on this forum people often ramble on about how scouts are broken but i believe they are not, its just a case of playing it how they where designed.
They where not designed to be direct combat suits, they're used to flank enemy lines undetected cause some damage, weaken the defenses for the main force, this is why its also great to run with a squad as a scout.
On to weaponry i find its good to have a short and medium range weapon, so i wield nova knives and scrambler pistols, nova knives a brilliant for stealthy kills, meaning you could take out 3 people before the enemy even knew you where their, unlike the shotgun which generate a lot of noise. Also if you skill in to the scrambler pistol to at least level 3 you now have a high damage medium range weapon, which draws little PG and CPU saving this for higher level modules.
Equipment greatly depends on your play-style scanners are good to know when to strike your enemy and where from, but remote explosives are good for laying traps, so that ones up to you.
Modules also depend on your play-style, i personally use cardiac regulators and profile dampeners to run for along time and be undetectable, but again this depends how you play.
I hope these basic guidelines help out some of you budding scouts.

UNDETECTED.
Without high-level skills AND modules (preventing you from fitting anything else), that simply DOESN'T HAPPEN because Scanners.
If you're not a high-level Scout, you can't even come remotely close to filling the role because a single high-level Scanner removes your ONLY protection. If you ARE a high-level Scout, but you want to fit anything EXCEPT a dampener, you just sacrificed the only chance you had to survive.
In 1.8 there's going to be a reduction in Scan Profile for Scouts, so we'll be harder to find. |

Requiring Scouts to train a specific skill AND requiring a specific fitting to do the role even ADEQUATELY, let alone well, is a design flaw for a game with customisation as a key feature.
That's my point.
It's unusual and difficult to master, but you CAN speed-tank a Commando suit and keep up with Assault and Logi suits while running two Light Weapons. You CAN stealth-tank a Logi and run it as a Scout with less speed and stamina and better weapons and HP and extra equipment. you CAN fit an assault with a Repair Tool and focus heavily on keeping teammates alive as if you were a Logi. You can also fit an Assault suit with a dual tank and run it almost like a Heavy suit.
If you want to run a Scout? You HAVE to focus on stealth, or you fail, because stealth is the ONLY viable way to use the suit.
Other suits have an obvious role, but allow for a good amount of flexibility within that role. Scouts don't. They have a specific role, and ONLY that role, or they fail to get anywhere or do anything.
It sounds very much like that's going to be changing in 1.8 though, so I'm hoping it lives up to expectations. We'll see. |

I still have to say being a scout in pre-1.8 at any level is not bad at all... you just need to be smart at how you play (choosing your prey and knowing when to get out). There is an obvious advantage with being a "high-level" scout but even proto scouts don't need dampners (the bonus takes care of most it), and it's really only necessary for proto scanners which are only found in PC and a few pub matches (I mean rare). Of course knowing your maps well and your weapons are also huge factors in determining how well you do in matches.

I can do well without dampeners if I get really, REALLY lucky and end up in a match with no enemies running good scanners. But in my experience, less than half the pub matches I play as a Scout are matches without proto scanners.
You may have seen them less often than me, but your personal experience is no more (or less) valid than mine. It would be nice to see hard numbers on the prevalence of high-end scanners vs. other equipment types, actually. How often are people skilling into the top-tier models compared with nanohives, uplinks, etc.? |

a scout is an extremely high sp/skill build
racial scout 5 profile dampening 3 (~ 4 million SP)
scouts can't play until they meet that requirement. which is sad. you can't really expect any new player to survive through their first 4 mill without filling any cores and using MLT weapons. but everything beyond those 2 skill delays their training elongating the time that a scout suit is functionally useless.
in my experience there are 3 ways to build a scout.
1. with a high sp toon and a respec 2. branching the scout as a secondary suit off a toon with solid cores and a good primary 3. building your scout before active scanners were introduced
say what you want about how the scout isn't broken. it is

Well that's why you have speed. And if you really think that's how scouts are right now, you should come see how some scouts play in the Scouts United chat.. because I'm sure you'll fine many scouts that do well.

You can avoid almost all of them and get hit rarely if you know how to play. The shield/armor buffer combined with speed a scout has is what saves his skin.

No one ever seems to mention counter-scouting on the forums. For my purposes, I consider anyone spamming a scanner to be a scout, too.
I love running with damps because you do see plenty of advanced scanners in public matches and it makes it easy to remain undetected with middling stealth skills (profile damp/precision/range enhancement) and an advanced suit.
The only thing more fun for me than sniping heads from towers or shotgunning them at objectives while I dance around in the enemy's peripheral vision, is getting the "SCAN ATTEMPT PREVENTED" message at the top of my screen then proceeding to hunt down the scanner.
Also, I regularly see proto scouts running around when I apparently don't show up on their radar (or they don't pay attention, which doesn't make much sense to me). I assume this because on numerous occasions I've seen a proto AV or RR scout getting into position, as I make my way across the map to a quiet objective, only to take a quick break to run right up behind him and blast him in the head.
Have you seen my baseball?
