UNDETECTED.
Without high-level skills AND modules (preventing you from fitting anything else), that simply DOESN'T HAPPEN because Scanners.
If you're not a high-level Scout, you can't even come remotely close to filling the role because a single high-level Scanner removes your ONLY protection. If you ARE a high-level Scout, but you want to fit anything EXCEPT a dampener, you just sacrificed the only chance you had to survive.
In 1.8 there's going to be a reduction in Scan Profile for Scouts, so we'll be harder to find. |

Requiring Scouts to train a specific skill AND requiring a specific fitting to do the role even ADEQUATELY, let alone well, is a design flaw for a game with customisation as a key feature.
That's my point.
It's unusual and difficult to master, but you CAN speed-tank a Commando suit and keep up with Assault and Logi suits while running two Light Weapons. You CAN stealth-tank a Logi and run it as a Scout with less speed and stamina and better weapons and HP and extra equipment. you CAN fit an assault with a Repair Tool and focus heavily on keeping teammates alive as if you were a Logi. You can also fit an Assault suit with a dual tank and run it almost like a Heavy suit.
If you want to run a Scout? You HAVE to focus on stealth, or you fail, because stealth is the ONLY viable way to use the suit.
Other suits have an obvious role, but allow for a good amount of flexibility within that role. Scouts don't. They have a specific role, and ONLY that role, or they fail to get anywhere or do anything.
It sounds very much like that's going to be changing in 1.8 though, so I'm hoping it lives up to expectations. We'll see. |

There is an obvious advantage with being a "high-level" scout but even proto scouts don't need dampners (the bonus takes care of most it), and it's really only necessary for proto scanners which are only found in PC and a few pub matches (I mean rare). Of course knowing your maps well and your weapons are also huge factors in determining how well you do in matches. I can do well without dampeners if I get really, REALLY lucky and end up in a match with no enemies running good scanners. But in my experience, less than half the pub matches I play as a Scout are matches without proto scanners.
You may have seen them less often than me, but your personal experience is no more (or less) valid than mine. It would be nice to see hard numbers on the prevalence of high-end scanners vs. other equipment types, actually. How often are people skilling into the top-tier models compared with nanohives, uplinks, etc.? |
