Place somewhere they won't be seen, bait, detonate.
Bonus points for +50 against proto.
Double Bonus against heavies.
I find that having a good passive scan is really helpful for troll REs (my favorite).
I don't really use them on the objectives because smart players look around first.
It's simple, really. |

Putting them in stairs is also great for when they're planning to go down. They won't see them.
Putting them at the side of doorways is good against zerg rushers.
You can also use 1 RE to bait players thinking they're safe since you detonated them early and then you can plant another one quickly or use shotgun for ambush (I do this sometimes).
You can also throw them from high places and detonate once they're active. |

For tanks, you should use flux grenades to go along with them, just to be safe. Plant remotes, use flux, then detonate.
You'll have a dead tank every time. |
