They really aren't much different than shotguns, functionally, if you like to apply shotgun blasts to the back of the head at short range like I do.
The advantage they have over shotguns is that you can just dance around them while spamming R1 and you'll still probably hit them.
I am your scan error.

Choose a complimentary light weapon. Knives are short range and (largely) only effective if you have the element of surprise. Having something with a decent range and more versatility will mean you can still participate in a battle even when opportunities to knife do not arise.
If you just run with knives you will probably get frustrated quickly (unless you are very good with them). |

Don't get killed. People die if they are killed.
Seriously though use advanced or higher. Damage mods are your friends.
Knife behind their back and use an advanced dampner.
Flank a lot.
If you jump while Sprinting, you can charge in mid air while maintaining speed. Only use this when you think you WILL get them. (This is my secret) |

This is how I got "alright" with Knives (even though I prefer shotty fit because REs). |

Also surprise is your friend
Speed and Stamina
Kin and Card let's you get at them quick and still be able to jump, then charge Knives. Quick tap anything that is still standing, anything more than three and you freeze the Knives, so pause after that reposition (with another jump and long charge if you can.

Get prototype so you can maximize the charge up on the knives and know when to use them and when not to. A lot of times scouts (like myself) will get killed because we make stupid decisions and pull out the knives at the wrong time. I advise you to use them as for:
1. Killing someone when they don't see you or know you're there.(especially when you're behind them) 2. Destroying equipment 3. Knifing those pesky snipers (which somewhat counts as no.1) 4. (This one is interesting and very clever to do) Hiding in an Indent of a wall inside a building or near the entrance where the redberry doesn't see you and when they walk in you knife them with your charged knives (You'll probably kill them unless its a heavy).
Minja. We run and hide. And then we kill you.

It is easy to learn about something. To tell you to sneak around and kill people with Nova Knives is something you already knew. To actually understand what you learned is what makes it valuable. Why are you sneaking around? Why should shout fit a certain way? Why should you just ignore that guy that seems like an easy kill?
The best advice I can give you (Joel X II has this figured out as well) is to put your knives in your L slot and a STD Flaylock pistol in the other. It serves 3 purposes: Firstly, it allows you to quickly destroy equipment without sitting there charging your knives. Second, it gives you an option to "sneak in" that last bit of damage if you're about to die or an enemy is escaping. Third, it is a weapon that requires CQC/ambush combat anyway and its ability to dispatch enemies won't make you favor it over using your knives as your primary form of damage (instead of easier-to-use CQC like a shotgun or AR or something that removes focus like a ScR). Optionally, for me anyways, it is nice to have a sidearm to switch back and forth like I have ADD...I like to think that I am maintaining APM and it keeps me at a certain level of attention. In the end it puts you on the right mindset and forces you to practice for only 600 isk.
DISCLAIMER 1: This is advice to be taken if you are planning on becoming skilled with Nova Knives. If your plan is to just tout them on your suit and get the optional kill with them then all you need to know is to find someone standing still and punish them with high alpha.
DISCLAIMER 2: I am at the best 'ok' with knives. However I've been a shotgun player for a long time and have played with many Nova Knife users, so I'm not completely in the dark. It really is a matter of challenging, focused practice.

When I've been dabbling in knives recently, I've been throwing a standard CR on the fit. Knives are tons of fun, but unless you're a scout god, there's going to be times when it's just not feasible sneak up into melee range. A well-managed CR will drop pretty much everything other than a heavy or bricked gallogi before they can turn around, and the fitting requirements are very reasonable even for my G-1 BPO. |

You can't play ambush with them or even dom. Gotta be on a map with a lot of objectives where red dots have an incentive to be spread out - town skirmish is the best. Learn to use them only with proto, when you are good you can use advanced with decent success too. The rest of it is tricks of the trade - most knife scouts won't spill them that easy.
PLC, NK, Scout - before 1.8.
That's right, I stack that OP Sh!t.

Run a scanner, for a short time learn your enemy's movement patterns, then get in fast, strike and get out fast.
