I don't use vehicles at all so I'm just curious. You Skill into it like do with a Dropsuit. You fit like you do a Dropsuit. So I'm just curious, why not treat it as if it IS a Dropsuit? Pilots would be able to spawn in already in there chosen vehicle (but still by RDV), and they wouldn't have to worry about people stealing them. There would be no need for the Pilot Suit, because we already have an entire Skill Tree dedicated to Vehicles. The Pilot Suit just seems redundant. Set the Vehicle Skill Tree to match the Dropsuit Skill Tree and it accomplishes the same thing.
The immediate drawback would be that pilots wouldn't be able to exit their vehicle either, and run around the battlefield on foot. I can see how that might upset some players, but everything should have some drawbacks for balance sake. This means that Tankers wouldn't be able to get out and hack Points, but most don't get out anyway; they just hold an area until someone from their team/squad shows up to hack it. They also wouldn't be able fly Dropships up to the top of buildings and set up sniping positions, but they would still be able fly someone else from their team/squad up there to do it instead. Pilots would/should still be able to recall their vehicle (but maybe only at Supply Depots, like Dropsuits, or from behind the redline). Also not being to get out means that Pilots won't be able to repair their own vehicles, thereby needing to rely on their teammates for reps, just the like Infantry.
Of course, there would also have to be a replacement for the Pilot Suit as well, maybe a Light Assault or something, I don't know.
This would also make sense for the fabled Mech Suits as well (I forgot what they're called). |

Seriously, I just don't see a need for a Pilot Suit. With the Vehicle Skill Tree you can level into, and specialize in, any vehicle you want, just like you can with Dropsuits. The difference is with my idea is that you wouldn't be able to bring both to the battlefield at the same time. |

Which part? Getting rid of the redundant Pilot Suit? Or not only being able to bring a vehicle OR a Dropsuit to a fight, but not both?
Seriously, if you can show me why I'm wrong I will change my mind. I am susceptible to logic like that. |

If vehicles took no SP to use, I would fully support a Pilot Suit. If CCP puts the entire Vehicle Skill Tree under the Pilot Suit, I will support that. Having the Vehicle Skill Tree in addition to the Pilot Suit, makes that suit redundant. Any bonuses I have to my Dropsuit comes from Skills, either the Skill directly, or in in the use of better Equipment I can place onto the Suit itself. The should be true of Vehicles: any bonus to the vehicle I use should either come from a Skill directly, or in the use of better Equipment I can place onto the Vehicle itself.
Also, in EVE they have already outlined how Pilots interact with their ships: through the Capsules. Utilizing the same tech used in larger ships, pilots can now control planet based vehicles in the same manner: Hence, no need for an armored suit. |

Escaping is a secondary function that isn't needed in Dust. The primary function is the ship control. Since it can already be done without the use of a specialized suit in space, why would one be needed for planet based ships/vehicles? |
