So during testing we found an issue regarding the rewards for killing vehicles, so unfortunately we have had to pull that part of the event. As such, we have decided to roll the extra 250k SP from that portion of the event in to the main SP cap, so now you can earn a total of 750k SP from killing heavies or getting kills with heavy weapons. Wish I'd seen this edit earlier. Been wasting proto suits and destroying my KDR chasing after tanks and dropships with my forge, for nothing it turns out.
Maybe you guys could provide the full event information on the start screen? There is already a blurb about Operation Mauler, which is something I guess, but it doesn't include basic info like which actions are rewarded or even when the event starts and ends. It's a bit unreasonable to expect us to check the thread every day just in case you've changed the terms. |

Your saying you dont check the 'dev posts' tab at the top of the forums every few hours like everyone else? Just this morning there were eight of those. Hardly reasonable to expect every player to read every dev post 'just in case'. |

What would you qualify for in the following conditions, cause I'm confused on whether or not WEARING a Heavy Suit and killing with a NON-heavy weapon does anything.
Basically you ONLY get anything if you either: (1) kill someone with a heavy weapon (2) kill a heavy suit
Logistics - Sniper Rifle, kills heavy == (A) Heavy - Sniper Rifle, kills heavy == (B) Heavy Suit - HMG or FG, kills heavy == (A+B)
LEGEND (A) USE heavy weapon = 500 SP + proto weapon (B) KILL heavy suit = 250 SP + ISK reward (A+B) USE heavy weapon to KILL heavy suit = 750 SP + proto weapon + ISK reward Kill heavy with heavy weapon+suit=750SP+proto weapon+ISK KIll heavy with any other suit/weapon combination=250SP+ISK |

I've gone from disliking, to liking, to intensely disliking this event.
At first I thought 'this will be an awful grind'. Then I started using HMG and enjoyed it. But after a while it become an awful grind after all. I am sick of having to run HMGs every game if I want to taste a reasonable amount of the extra SP. (I don't like tower forging in pubs, and FG is not really going to get you many kills if you're on the ground.)
I know it's bonus SP, in addition to the usual SP payout. But CCP know and every player knows that SP is the main thing, or at least one of the main things, driving the game. People pay actual money for boosters, so of course they're going to go out of their way to get extra SP. The problem is, it is not fun, AT ALL, to run the same weapon (one I wouldn't usually use) every game. And we're only a few days into the event - how bored is everyone who's doing the event going to be in a week and a half?
I play the game most days, but I'm still only getting 500 kills per week, so about 1000 for the duration of the event. That's more than most of the playerbase. But with the 500SP per HMG/FG kill bonus and 750,000SP bonus cap, you need 1,500 kills. So even if I use HMG constantly, I'm not going to hit the cap.
The cap should have been set way lower. I thought 400,000 at first, but even that is too high. I think 200,000 or 300,000 would have been better.
400,000SP is 800 kills, so given I'm getting some kills with grenades, SMGs and OBs even when I carry HMG, even a 400,000SP cap would mean I had to carry HMG every game if I'm going to get all the bonus SP. So that's just as grindy as 750,000SP. But with 200,000 or 300,000, you 'only' need 400 or 600 kills. So a player who plays roughly as much as I do would get a little 'wriggle room', and wouldn't need to run HMG every game.
Please CCP, for future events, set the 'number of kills with specific weapons (HMG/FG in this case) to exhaust bonus SP' much lower. Setting it as high as 750,000, or even 400,000-500,000, just makes the event ubergrindy. At least with the vanilla trebled SP cap you could play how you wanted. I feel like this event turns players off from the game, by forcing them to choose between SP and enjoyment.
Finally, I should say that event stat tracking is also very much needed. |

Finally, I should say that event stat tracking is also very much needed. Thanks for the feedback. The grind element is there for this event partly to encourage players to play more. However, I also understand where you're coming from, to some, this could seem to be excessive. The idea is to give players a big SP bonus, so we set it to 750K. The feeling of it being a grind is in the SP per kill amount. If we set the SP reward to say, 1000 SP per kill for the next event, that would effectively cut down the kills required to reach the cap by half. So, instead of having to make between 1000 to 1500 kills, it would be around 500 to 750 kills. I am open to discussion on this, so let me know your thoughts. We also agree that progression tracking is sorely needed and are negotiating with the development team to up the priority to make this feature. +1 That would be a big improvement. It would still be a bit grindy but much better. Thanks!
Glad to hear progression tracking is also somewhere in the queue. |

First you found a bug you missed after the event started, makign the vehicle kill portion no longer needed, now, unless I'm reading this wrong, you're suggesting you might cut the kills needed in half? I doubt you have efficient stat tracking to track everyone's current kill count and I highly doubt you can just lower the kill count and actually compensate for those that have gone over the new kill count or are still under it. That is, unless I read it wrong. By the way, a dev/GM has yet to answer my question about how you guys are actually able to tell if someone is boosting or not. Have you guys looked at the leader boards lately? I'm pretty sure a lot of those folks are boosting. If you aren't constantly watching the top players, then you people are hypocrites that deserve to have your game fail. Just saying. He said 'next event'.
As for your last point, why do you think the top players are boosting? Maybe if you give some reasons CCP might think about looking into it. If your reason is just 'Duna's KDR is too high!', that's just because he mercilessly stomps noobs in EU ambush using the ridiculously OP tanks. No boosting required. |

I am not the best player and of course I've had 20+ kills at some points before I started writing them down but 20+ kills with an HMG is not a regular thing unless you are using proto all the time and/or are extremely good. I am neither extremely good, nor am I using proto. All in all the numbers I will show are that of the regular Merc who is neither in a squad with 5 other protostompers, neither a prodigy with an HMG or using proto all the time. This is the average Joe who plays for fun and is sometimes with a buddy or two, other times alone and just trying to grind through this event to get his SP. Papa needs some level 5's. I am using advanced gear with 2 complex damage mod for the added damage to my advanced Burst HMG. I have profi 5 but as I said I am not the best of players. Key: M= Match T = Total D = Daily total HERE IS MY CHARTI also Have to say that I have had a lot of time to play; not many people do. Also, this is my second chart on my third day of the event, although the event has had 4 days to it If I am not mistaken. Yeah this is the problem with HMG, you can put up big numbers if the fighting is really intense and close quarters, but that doesn't happen often. This week I had one 39 kill game (with logi support), a couple of other 30-odd kill games, but the majority are below 15.
The first game I played with RR+medium for a change I got 41 kills, and it was 20+ every game after that. This is with advanced suit, proto weapon with high proficiency, and M1 grenades - same combination I use with HMG.
Basically the HMG is a difficult weapon to run all game, every game because it is so situational. That makes the grind worse than it would be with many weapons. |

Grand Master Kubo wrote:Personally, I have no problem with the grind of events past and present. For me, events are put in place to break up the monotony of the game. After putting so many hours in to Dust, players will find that they are getting bored. When I get bored I try new things. I try flying dropships, I try out commandos, I try the plasma cannon.
Of course there are always the players that never switch up their playstyle. The types of players who run the same fit over and over and over again. How do they not get bored? How could they be so mindless?
What I want from CCP is more events. It doesn't matter what they are but I need to be given something to do; something to strive towards in game. Also, they don't have to be skill point events. The Black Eagle event was really awesome in my opinion. It gave me the chance to use a sneaky and speedy suit with two light weapons. Plus it gave newer players the chance to try out a halfway decent scout suit without having to skill into scouts. Obviously attaining a 5.0 K/D was nearly impossible, I just said to myself that I may as well try it and it was a blast.
Events are a way of pulling players away from the "flavour of the month" fits. During this heavy event I was playing in a game against kaizuka sniper and typically you'll see him in a full proto medium fit with a proto weapon. In this game he was running advanced heavy gear with I think just a basic HMG. He didn't finish the game as high up on the killboard as he normally would but I am sure that he had more fun.
Are more players online during events? Probably. CCP, I want more events. It does not matter what they are there just needs to be more. As I'm one of the people complaining about the event, let me pitch in here.
I like the basic idea of events rewarding people for using a different playstyle, in this case HMG. I played a skirmish today that went right down to the wire - both teams were on their final tick of armour with all points changing hands, and when we won we were down to two or three clones as well. The fight in the city was intense, I was spawning into hopeless situations just to get a couple of kills with HMG and distract the reds from hacking for a few more seconds. I went 40-13, not amazing KDR-wise and very expensive, but it was much, much more enjoyable than the 40+-0 games I've had in a medium suit.
The problem is that that is not the usual situation for a game with the HMG. A lot of games you are just stuck waiting for the enemy to come to you. In those situations I want to be able to switch to a different suit and go looking for trouble, but this event penalizes me in SP terms if I do that. If the cap was lower or (as Cmdr Wang has suggested) the SP per kill was higher, that would be less of an issue.
TL;DR I agree that events should encourage people to switch up their playstyle. But when the SP cap is very high relative to per kill payout, people are stuck playing only one playstyle for two weeks straight. That's the reverse of what the event should be about - providing a more varied experience. |
