Dust is just a side project that you have the newb devs to learn on until they are cleared to develop for EVE right? It explains so so much.

Considering dust was originally coded for the carbon engine, and then had to be reworked for the unreal engine, I think they have done a decent job considering most of them haven't worked with unreal before.
That said, I hope they go back to carbon someday. It was an awesome engine, much better than crappy unreal.

The problem with the Carbon Engine is that it's pretty damn advanced for it's own good. It took a long time to properly optimize it for Eve Online's Incarna feature (the captain's quarters). During the initial launch of Incarna back in 2011, the engine was pretty new and since it was poorly optimized it resulted in many graphic cards literally melting according to various players reporting in the Eve forums.
Today, the engine has been polished mostly up to this point and is now stable and has become the central part of Eve Online. In fact, here is a little known fact about the Carbon Engine. It's more than just a game engine. It's an entire game architecture. How we connect to it, thrive in it, visualize it, and interact with it is driven by the architecture. Um, it does exist. It was created by CCP Games as an in-house game architecture. It just wasn't ready yet for the console.

Dust devs are mostly FPS programmers and thus would likely not make the best space sim devs. Not saying crossover doesn't happen but in big companies and with big games specialists are used who have experience in a particular area, so they know what their doing. Hence why very few Eve devs have come over to work on Dust.
Also, no one said Carbon was a game engine - there are other types of engines and Carbon is more of a graphics engine than anything but as Maken Tosch said, it's kinda an architecture in itself.

In regards to peoples GPU melting,
While it is very possible that Carbon was pushing CPU`s and GPU`s to its limit (100% load) the only reason anyone's graphics card would 'melt' is down to their own system having poor ventilation/cooling capacity.
If your system cannot hack 100% load for a few mins let alone a few hours then either : A. - You are pushing your system too hard with an overclock. B. - You have poor cooling in your system case / cooling for the components. C. - Your card was on its way out anyway.
For anyone considering over-clocking their PC or even just people curious to how well your PC handles heat, go run benchmark software that pushes your system to 100% for an hour or two. Things like Prime and other benchmarking software. |

as in it melted consoles.
here is a demo of carbon, it's really pretty.
before you get all "dust would have been so much better with carbon" remember it MELTED CONSOLES. i don't know about you but I prefer my ps3 not in puddle form...
