That said, I hope they go back to carbon someday. It was an awesome engine, much better than crappy unreal.
The problem with the Carbon Engine is that it's pretty damn advanced for it's own good. It took a long time to properly optimize it for Eve Online's Incarna feature (the captain's quarters). During the initial launch of Incarna back in 2011, the engine was pretty new and since it was poorly optimized it resulted in many graphic cards literally melting according to various players reporting in the Eve forums.
Today, the engine has been polished mostly up to this point and is now stable and has become the central part of Eve Online. In fact, here is a little known fact about the Carbon Engine. It's more than just a game engine. It's an entire game architecture. How we connect to it, thrive in it, visualize it, and interact with it is driven by the architecture. Here is a detailed video from CCP explaining it.

Um, it does exist. It was created by CCP Games as an in-house game architecture. It just wasn't ready yet for the console.

It only does some parts of simulations of characters in EVE when you look at graphics itself. It is not ENGINE like UNREAL ENGINE in that sense. /tries not to facepalm that hard.
I suppose you're right. By the way, no need to facepalm.
