Why would anyone create another character to change roles rather than build on the one they have already invested in? I mean if you start out putting all of your SP into assault skills and a month or so down the road, what's stopping you from using the skills you have but say put your skills into a scout direction or logi?
Am I missing something here? I hear people creating other characters for changes but why throw away all that SP investment you've already made? |

I do it for testing. I make an alt, let it collect passive for a while, then have it skill all its points into a particular item. This lets me get a feel for items that I may or may not want to skill my main into.

I have alts to test fits for new **** coming out, my buddy hasn't stuck with 1 character since the beta came out though, he so damn indecisive lol.
There really isn't a point to it if you're patient I've finally gotten almost everything in dropsuit upgrades maxed out, I've got a couple weapons that I use professionally, now I can get into different suits just because why not, test out different weapons without worrying if I'm spreading my points too thin, if it doesn't work out I always got something to fall back on, took a year's worth of working and waiting but it's definitely more worth it.

For testing out weapons and suits without potentially wasting SP on my main.

Another reason is,if you 'cap out' your main character you can switch to an alt and gain the extra SP on that one instead ( my 'main' is logi and my alt is a scout ). |

Yea I have alts for when I cap out my main and also because there's minimal to no skill overlap between them (ex: my main is a min shotgun scout skilled into a lot of dropsuit skills and weaponry skills, one of my alts is a dedicated tanker/ADS pilot) |

Quite a common thing is to use the alt as a vehicle user, as there is relatively little benefit to having vehicle SP on the same character as infantry SP.
However, you are right that usually for infantry roles, you have so much SP dropped in dropsuit upgrades etc, which will benefit any infantry role, that even if you change to a totally different infantry playstyle, you'll be better off using your existing character than an alt. For instance, I changed from being a heavy to medium suits a few months ago. Even though pretty much every point I had in weapons and dropsuits was useless to the new role, using my existing account gave me a massive headstart in dropsuit upgrades over using an alt account (even one with 5mil+ passive SP). And of course if I need AV or point defence, I still have the proficiency 5 forge gun and HMG, something that no amount of SP will get you on a medium character. |

Even if you are afraid of wasting the points, not earning them is the same as wasting them |
