its a staple in hardcore, tactical shooters, and when the battlefields get bigger we'll need it for snipers, to show bombers/fighters which targets to hit and grenades having to be equipped would lower spam.

Hey don't hate on scanners! After they are fixed it'll be better, no more 360 bullcrap
But target painting is a solid feature that we need in Dust. Would grenades be with R1 then? |

We suggested this some time ago.
@Prius Yes, you could use the wheel to quick-equip or two clicks of R2 would get you to grenades. |

Didnt know they were getting fixed, would still like to see them removed from the game, was much better before their arrival. |

They fill a role but IMO you have to be super careful or what happened, HAPPENS (basically wall-hacks) as long as they have a fixed degree radius and long cool-down they'll be better.
Hopefully uplinks are next. They impact gameplay just as much if not more.

That is really good. Requires teamwork to be used to max effectiveness. everyone profits...now we just need crippled vehicles, webifiers and WP for damaging vehicles. |

My friend it's just a base suggestion. What range to operate and other game mechanics must be tested, however I c potential in somthing like this coming into the game not only the problems.
Best regards to you sir

Like the OP said above, this is a tried/true mechanic that succeeds in FPS.
Games haven't failed because they added target painting. It's enhanced the experience if anything.

Oh god no.
After playing BF4 I kept tapping R2 in every game I played whenever I saw an enemy for about three days.

Sounds great, now translate that to Mandarin and the guys that spent 18 months on dispersion and hit detection should have that out in a hurry.

Would like to see it as a sidearm, tbh. Target painting is a thing in EvE, a type of aggressive EWAR, so equipping modules/equip,met or guns that can paint targets for dropships to zero down on etc would be pretty neat. not sure about it being an innate ability like in Battlefield, though. Would it tread on scanners toes?

Scanners will be less dominant after 1.8 and soldiers need to be able to paint snipers and other guys outside their range to say "thats where the threat is."
I'm thinking for the future tho, when we need fighters/bombers to take out an MTAC, turret or rail tank sitting 100m from our position. |

I don't think it should work like in Battlefield. Would make scanners rather pointless.
Instead you should be able to mark the ground or walls and say "Enemy in this area".
It won't leave a mark on the enemy itself like in BF.

Make it so you can only paint one target and the scanner still reigns supreme. The mechanics dissimilar tho, one lets you scan through walls and highlight people over a certain scan profile and the other paints a target so your team can see them.
And it kind of defeats the purpose if you can't actually paint the target don't u think? |

Agree with your point, this function will have a role regardless of the scanner. |

Good suggestion, but this is something that I think will need some work in terms of range and what exactly a TP will do in Dust. In Eve it increases the signature radius but here you are wanting to mark a target which a squad leader can already do with squad commands. The limited range on weapons should IMO be the range on any player painting a target but this means that the sniper will be the main man on the painter, this sets them apart as uniquely suited to the role and ultimately I believe it would give them a good purpose on the battle field.

Eeh no, not quite as you desribed it thank you, I would prefer a specalised equipment. The module a "Support Designator" will be attached to your weapon either as over or under barrel attachmemt, it allows enemies to designated, strikes to be coordinated a so forth.
