Personally I believe that real life tactics in the game work extremely well. A few examples that I use successfully when I play:
Flanking objectives, Ambushing, Over watch, use of rally point feature, avenues of approach, etc...

I would like to see more people use these, rather than watching blue dots walk into wall after wall of enemy fire instead of flanking them or going to a less defended objective.

I can't even count the amount of times I've seen a whole team stand there banging away at a well defended area "umm guys there's another door we can hit" lol

There is a saying that people here on the forums like to throw around from time to time: "Teamwork is OP" so yeah I'd definitely say that actual tactcs work just ask OSG. A lot of those guys used to be in the military and they are scary when their in a full squad working together, nevermind the proto stompers look out for the smart players.

However, in game tactics do NOT work in real life.

Please guys do not go out thinking you're a heavy and can soak up several bullets...will not end well.

 Bolded for emphasis.

Yes, flanking is an INCREDIBLY powerful tactic. It can break an enemies line of attack and help you allies move into a better position. Suppressing firing works a little bit. I have done it before. Shoot at or hit an enemy and when they are ducking down you can charge into a better position or your team can move up. Firing lines are slightly effective for just putting out an overwhelming amount of fire that the enemy cannot shoot back.

 Yes and no.

I dislike those guys who always bring in Sun Tzu when it comes to shooters. Sun Tzu has nothing to do with shooter games, since most of what he preaches doesn't take into account some shooter mechanisms, like respawning and such.

So for me, yes you can use real life tactics, but don't expect them to always work.

I counter with this sir: dancing fairies. As some of you may recall that particular tactic with super tanked Caldari Logis, it was massively irritating. In real life you get to cover or go prone, not leap into the air like a surprised cat. Although there seems to be a strong following for the return of that though, I hope they get a hemorrhoid every time they get killed by a militia AR and fairy leaping fails to save them.

RL small unit military tactics do work quite well...they are also a little at odds with how most FPS games reward you.

Basically, teamwork is the biggest leveling factor in this (or most games) and as long as you don't care about your KDR you can have good players take on and bit groups of better individual players.

Basically, we rarely solo OBJs and continually move to cover different sectors of fire and each other as we move. Setting up a base of fire, suppressing the enemy, then flanking...this works very well. We are also pretty meticulous about sqd load out even in pubs and frankly we're extremely efficient on coms using tactical short hand and good procedures - this helps much more than you can imagine.

All that said, there will always be some game-isms. RL tactics can only give you a baseline to adapt your own techniques and some structure...you'll still have to adapt at the speed of war or be left behind.

PS... ISK for the first person that knows what "forming a Y" is for the dropship.

Most reliable tactic is cooking a grenade and running headfirst into an enemy crowd.:p
In chrome, when shield was way OP, I used to armor tank, cook a flux , jump into a crowd, and mow down all fools

You can actually apply most of Sun Tzu's wisdom to things outside of war, even just basic day to day activities. It's just a matter of how you look at it and apply it.

There is still plenty that he says that can be applied to DUST or any FPS game
