This was going to be a reply on another thread but it turned into an essay of it's own and was a little off topic, I've never started a thread here before so thought, why not? You should all go read the thread though, it makes for interesting, if a little sad, reading: https://forums.dust514.com/default.aspx?g=posts&t=140231
I think fundamentally having a game mode with a meta level 2 cap would make a huge difference. It's pretty much where I'd live as an OSG Trainer/Recruiter, and I think you'd find it'd become the most popular game type, so a lack of players won't be an issue. Leaving proto-stompers to go get a real challenge out of each other. That's not to say I wouldn't jump into the proto leagues, it just wouldn't be when I'm doing my casual ISK/SP grind or running my LOL suits. I'd make sure I'm in a squad and we're running tactically.
At times I've felt bad, running my sunday best when we see a full squad on the opposing team (especially if we have a grudge), 12 players running their PC gear, each squad placing 1-6 on their their respective leaderboards... while the blueberries go 2/15 or worse, squished like... well, blueberries. I'm not a brilliant player but there's not much you can do with 500k sp and a 350hp starter fit against a 1,645hp, Prof 4, Dual Complex DMG, Six Kin Burst HMG dealing the burst equivalent of ~1,400 DPS (if memory serves ~850 per burst, I recall in some of those matches chewing through 2 reds in a single burst). Note: Quick bit of math and it would take more than a full Milita AR clip to down that build. Total TTK would be 7.5 seconds, including reload. An extreme scenario I know but not a completely atypical one.
While SP assignment would give you a definite advantage you have to admit not seeing Kaalkiotia Rail Rifle and/or Boundless Combat Rifle etc over and over in the killfeed is going to make a difference. And will make it a lot easier to encourage people to stay, we've lost a lot of recruits to this, they go though their training but ultimately they learn they will be at a disadvantage for months to come and many will just move on. And those were ones that got training, what about those that don't? I know I would've dropped this game a long time ago if it wasn't for the great guys at OSG, and I only joined because I read about them while waiting for the game to download. And since then I've gone on to spend ~$200 on this game, and that really came down to enjoying the corp, not so much the game.
HTFU can only get you so far, and with no PvE there's no reason to stay but to get stomped and pad the KDR of others.
Obviously there would need to be some kind of reduction in ISK earnings and/or increase ISK in the uncapped matches, maybe have loot drops be a higher chance or bigger chunk of the salvage. The meta level of Militia HAVs would need to be adjusted though as I think they're <2?
Until we get PvE I think this is really what we need. I'm sure people will s**t all over this idea but I'm sure those are the same people crying doom pointing at the player count. |

Also, with the proficiency skills and hp-bonus skills veteran players will still be much more powerful than newer players. Prof V effectively makes a standard weapon deal as much damage as a prototype weapon + 1x enhanced damage mod.
As opposed to now where it's Proto weapon+Prof V+2 Complex Damage mods? |

Sure, so long as they bring out Militia variants of all Milita weaponry/suits.

It's more directed at the community to get a discussion going, as I'm sure devs are well aware of the stats. But fair call. |

The best that can be done is make the academy much longer, which wouldn't split the playerbase any further - it maintains the current number of divisions, just changes the membership criteria.
I disagree, is there already minute long wait times for pub games? No. Most I've been getting is maybe 10 seconds. We already have a divided player base, Asian, Oceanic, American and European servers, then divided by Skirmish, Ambush and Domination. That's between 4 and 81 divisions depending on if you select just one game mode or all 3. In fact to test this I just jumped over to the American server, selected just Domination and searched for battle, took 5 seconds to get into a match, it is currently between 7 and 10am Wednesday in the continental United States, hardly peak. In the interest of fairness I also tried Asia and Europe, with 4 and 3 seconds respectively. Current players = 2,791, not even close to the peak a few hours ago of 3,821. Q.E.D. Your argument is refuted.
To my knowledge Academy isn't separated by server. And its not too laggy, and I pretty much live permanently on the American servers (home server is the AFK server) and suffer almost no issues, so just make it open region. I know a squad of players from another region can cause lag bombing though so I'm not sure how well that'd work but I put a few alts through academy and it seems fine. Though equipment spam is vastly reduced, though it'd also be reduced on the metacap games as well as you won't be able to drop multiple tiers of equipment.
Worst case scenario if it was a clean 50/50 split of the player base you'd just end up waiting 20 seconds to start a match instead of 10.
But I think likely you'd end up with >80% of the player base playing the meta capped matches, so getting into the uncapped matches might have a FW like wait time. |
