Multiple small scale skirmishes before the 1.8 battle. Battles are superficial, and mostly unimportant overall (A battle over a mining colony, a small scale research facility, etc etc etc.)

1.8 battle is an area with high strategic value, with both sides pulling all stops to gain the outpost.
