I've heard that it's Bad Form to hide behind the red line, especially when sniping.
May I ask how this is done? Every time I go over the red line I am dead in about twenty seconds according the timer on the screen. So how to players get behind the red line and survive there?

Thanks for the clarificatons.
Are these 'red lines' visible or should they be known as 'infra red lines'?
This is interesting because I met a sniper (in the sense that he saw me though I didn't see him) yesterday. In one battle he got me at range, so I moved to the other side of the map and he got me again and then I moved elsewhere and he got me with a 500m shot.
So he certainly did his stuff.
Thanks for the eMails. This is giving me food for thought about all this right now and since I am constantltly 0/1, 0/2 all the way to 0/9 then perhaps I could do with a stay behind the red line for once.

Interesting point Zirzo. I suppose if the game map is small enough to be covered from someone with a good rifle behind the Red Line then there is something wrong.
If I was dropped at 500m+ yesterday by someone who had that capability then why shouldn't be behind the Red Line? This is not gladitiorial combat which is a spectator sport, it's about getting the job done. And if that fellow could get a dozen or more scalps by sitting behind the Red Line then clearly he's bringing his side closer to victory.
What I think that you're saying is that if it's legal and not breaking the game design then it's alright and therefore if this is a problem then the problem is with the game design. And, on the whole I tend to agree with you.

Thanks ever so much for the reply. Yes, I am trying to start to play a sniper. The only reason is that I am perhaps one of the oldest 10% of Dust players and my fingers aren't what they are used to be. So, the best thing for me to do is not to run, fire, do piroettes, a quick somersault and then dash off with the weapon blazing from my hip.
The only time I do anything with the hip is to worry about it cracking when I fall. So, least worst role for me would be the sniper. Yes, i would love to run around care-free amongst the ruins and crates but my turning circle and reaction speed is that of a large ocean going container vessel.
So, I am trying to learn to snipe in this game. It's still not easy and it's going to get me a good while to get SPs but the passive points are a god-send. But I ramble; thanks for the message and the comments I will digest them and the idea of being a counter sniper does appeal to be somewhat. I did have a go at that yesterday as it happens. My sole contribution to the battle was to flush the sniper out which is a posiitive but I still came home with no points of damage scored but at least I did something positive for the team even though no-one would have realised it.
Thanks

Thanks ever so much for this, I will try the uplink placing as that could be more productive for the team and I am not bothered about kill/death rations (it's far too late for that).
Can you give me a fit example of what I need to do this as I am rather cack-handed at the on-screen fitting process and trying to work out what skills I need for what? That is, if you don't mind.
But thanks for the hint.
Now, one thing; to save CPU and PowerGrid (PG) do I need to have weapons installed into the suit? I am hopless at them and I would rather have the CPU and PG for the Uplinks.

p.s. Things aren't so bad today. i managed over 1,000 SP in one match by dishing out over 500 pts in damage over the course of the battle. Beats the zero damage points in the two before that.

Thank you for an excellent post which has cleared up all sorts of questions for me. As soon as Downtime has passed and I can get my workload reduced I will try to have a go at some of this.
For the moment the ISK isn't an issue even though a week or two ago it was. I pop into a battle, get fragged repeatedly and I stiil receive a half decent bounty (well, considering what contribution that I have made) and now I have over 1.5m ISK which for someone with little or no SP income is rather a lot.
I think that I am going to have fun with this. Again, I do thank you.
