This is a cool game but seriously need some love for us new players. As you can see from the responses, the community puts in an effort to make up for CCP's poor effort with NPE
Make sure you check out the Rookie training grounds, there's alot of good new player guides there, and advice on becoming effective on the battlefield while low on SP (Punching above your weight). |

So just exactly would the NPE entail? Will it teach players how to stick it out even when the odds are against them? Will it teach them how to use the hills for cover? Will it teach them when to shoot and when not to shoot? Will it teach newberries to stop firing their weapons in a dropship or tank at nothing, alerting enemies to their presence? Will it teach them about flanking and concentrating fire? All I hear is "NPE, NPE, NPE" and that's it. What exactly should be involved in this NPE that would teach a player strategy and tactic? How about starting with something simple, like teaching them the rules of game instead of making them guess? Like, I don't know, teaching new players the mechanics of the game so they actually know the win criteria for a match? You know, hacking, counter hacking and clone count. Then maybe some details on how to squad, or use comms, or maybe find a corp. And yes, it should probably teach them about what the hud means and how it works, and maybe to stop firing their weapon in the dropship. Strategy and tactics is another matter, but at very least, you can give a new player enough into to be able to play a match. It's not rocket surgery. |

But some of it is pretty self explanatory. When you run to the objective, a pop up (press O to hack) appears. Clone count, well maybe that does need some explaining to a degree. And the HUD display I can agree with. Some will probably confuse the ticks with the clone count. But you would think after several battles, they will begin to tell the difference. Especially if they read the details that are placed in upon first arrival in the game. The dropship thing is kinda stupid though. If you take this game any seriously, you should know not to fire your weapon just to fire your weapon while in a dropship. It blows their position. How can one not come to this reasoning? And how come they aren't listening to players when its requested to stop firing while in the dropship? And strategy and tactics is the matter here. That's the main problem with the new players. They don't understand how to fight in Dust. Everything else in the prior paragraph should be understood if the player uses his brain just a bit. That's what I don't understand. How much hand holding is needed before the player realizes, if he uses his brain, he can get some kind of grasp of what's going on. Even after you hand hold them, they are still facing tough competition that will either make them or break them. I really think folks confusing NPE with that of teaching mercs how to fight. That falls upon the merc him or herself and the community's corporations. I agree with your sentiment, but I think you've got it the wrong way around.
The NPE should teach the mechanics of the game only, even if it takes some hand holding, because they need to cater to players who may never have played a FPS before and to whom even the simplest of gaming concepts may be foreign. By all means let players skip training if they're experienced, or have it so that training modules need to be selected instead of having players forced to it, but every mechanic should be covered in one shape or form and be available. Hacking, the use of different installations and turrets, grenades, equipment. Everything. And in particular, how to form or join a squad, and how to find a corp. This can all be done, and done well, through automated training.
Tactics and strategy come from experience, and the best place to learn is in battle and working with experienced players. I.e. in a corp or squad, not being led through it by an automated program. This sort of learning is best done in practice, and not through automated training, and should not be the subject of NPE. |
