Okay, I'm going to try to keep this short because I have a habit of getting pretty long winded. I've been playing since 1.1, hopping from character to character to character to character, never finding a single build that I would be happy with for more than a month or so. Needless to say, my finickiness is starting to become self-destructive. At this point trying to figure this out myself clearly isn't working to I'm hoping that you friendly folks here at the forums could lend me some much needed advice.
- I'm looking for a build that can be vital to the team, whether they are dominating or getting protostomped, and everything in-between. - I seem to work best when I'm not bottlenecked into one option, so versatility is a very important factor. - I tend to run solo more often than than in groups because of my faulty mic. - I've spent enough time in heavy suits to know that I'm better off with high speed hit and run tactics than damage soaking. - I'm horrendous with fully automatic weapons, not sure why they're easy mode for everyone else... - Due to playing most of the time without Active Scanners, I've gained pretty good spacial awareness. - As much as it sucks, looks really seem to matter to me. So Amarr Med and Min Scout are off the board by default (sorry, but those suits make my eyes want to melt like in raiders) - Last and stupidest of all, I really like to try and keep racial consistency for role-playing purposes.
If there are any suggestions you guys could think of that fits into that insane criteria, I would be extremely appreciative. If not then I completely understand. Just hoping another perspective could help me find a solution to this neverending problem. Thank you. |

sounds like an assault with a lav would do you good. the lav will protect you from small arms fire from kill to kill and active vehicle active scanner will let you scan for fights you can win solo. i use an MD/assault/lav and have the double droplinks but any light weapon can work with a hit and run lav (not the same as murder taxi) after each kill i drive somewhere to reload but that is because MD's reload is super long. if you drop the links you help your team and so does the active scanning
if my team gets a foothold i switch to a dropship with a CRU if that is going well i get out an ADS to finish off some stragglers or sniper nests

Caldari logi with RR, ill share my adv build changes every few weeks.
Highs- 2 complex damage mods, 1 complex shield Lows- 1 CPU extender, and either a basic plate or basic kin cat(sometimes a reg) weapon- adv rail rfile, combat rifle, or AR nades- M1 or basic flux equiptment- adv scanner, adv uplinks(best ones), basic or K2 hives.
These setups rarely let me down, sometimes I like the speed from kin cats and other times I like a little extra armor. After next patch Ill probably go caldari commando though.
What's not to love about the scrambler rifle, the thing is a precision weapon and at the same time a shotgun.

I'd suggest thinking less about creating 'a build' and more investing in one character over the long term with a focus on core skills and the ability to try multiple fits. You don't need a lot of skill points into individual suits and weapons to be effective. Moving from one character to another is actually slowing you down. If you don't mind investing cash into the game then Aurum does let you test new fits for just a few cents per fit if you only buy what your core skills don't cover.
Try one character with high core skills combined with standard and advanced weapons and suits. In depth proficiency can come later once you discover what truly makes you happy. There are some successful mercenaries that pride themselves in this strategy.

I agree with this so much. Abandoning and starting over and over again probably spread yourself so thin with your desire for versatility that you aren't equipped to match 1v1 against the average player. Core skills is really what you need. Proto suits are not really the win all people think they are. Proto mods and eq is really what helps people shine. However, the best players out there find no need to go above ADV gear.
With that in mind, skilling into Core skills early on sets you up to be better no matter what role you want to try. It also lets you skill only moderately and not heavily into suits and mods and still be very effective across the board. Doing this also saves you money. Suits are damn expensive, eq and mods less so. I save crap tons of isk being able to fit one or two proto gear on my ADV suit thanks to my core skills giving me more pg/cpu and also with my shields/armor core skills maxed.
As for the rifles, I used to think I was bad with them too, and don't get me wrong, I'm a very average player. Perhaps even below average, but for the most part, most of the people who are boss with fully auto weapons are running scanners. They know you're coming around the corner and can just unload the whole clip and drop you. Scanners play a big role in that feeling. I started running scanners with my team (yes, I'm a ballerina) and it made my rifle play night/day different.

Hey there, OP here from before (that other character had a lot of wasted points...and other problems) I've taken the suggestions to heart and I'm happy with the base of this character in almost every way. I'm just using my initial points to upgrade my core skills, and although I don't have money to spend on aurum, I'm doing a bunch of different faction warfare matches to try things out instead. I'm pretty sure that I'll end up going Caldari assault eventually. It has the stats I like, the speed I need, and looks to kill( And that state variant is unf!).
I still have no idea what I'm going to use for a main gun yet. Nothing's really speaking to me atm, but I am doing surprisingly well with a combat rifle and assault rifle, so far. Wish I was good with the rail rifle for racial RP but I am just as terrible as one could be with it right now. I'm still looking for a good mid-range cover fire light weapon, and close-range flanking sidearm combination. I seem to be good at flanking enemies(without a scanner), and even if the other blues aren't to bright, they make a good distraction to help me get into position.
Do you guys think I should wait until 1.8 before skilling into any weapons? That bolt pistol sound right up my alley. |

You're not the only one horrible with the RR. That thing is useless weigh in my hands and I really tried to be good at it. CR for the win.
I would definitely wait for 1.8 to drop and create a temp alt player to see how each one handles before doing anything.
I feel the shotgun is too much of a give away when you're able to flank more than one person. That distinctive sound travels and with such small amount of ammo and high probability to miss once people figure out what's going on, I think its the crutch of group flanking but still excellent in the right person's hands. I'm envious of these people.
The new pistol I know nothing about, so I'll just say if you're REALLY good at flanking, the scrambler pistol is god in certain people's hands.
If you're just great at flanking, I would go SMG. A good powered SMG in close range is crazy amazing. I have the bpo toxin one and didn't think much of it. Once I skilled into it, I could drop people faster than I ever expected. Most people hear the SMG and assume its a noob trying out new weapons, but with such high ROF and a decent clip, it can drop even the best of players.
This is my personal experience tho. Glad things are getting better OP!

Thought I should give a little update on how Ashe's journey has been so far. After hours and hours of testing, research, matches, and alts, I've decided to stick with, and skill into the Assault Rifle (I'll think of an RP excuse later). More specifically, the Breach AR. Why didn't anybody tell me how good this was. It has the power and dps that I like from the RR, but it retains the kick and accuracy of the default AR, which will only get better in time. Getting into range requires a bit of work, but I planned this character around to be able to get into range with ease. I am destroying with this gun in even fights, surviving surprise attacks, and taking heavies 1v1. Happy day indeed.
I've gotten all my 2nd stage core skill (armor upgrades, etc.) up to level 3, and nanocircuitry to level 1. I burned through my active sp already, so I'm waiting on my passive to get it to level 2, and I'll probably stop there for a little while. After that, I'm not so sure. Even for my level, I feel like I'm dying faster than I should in certain circumstances. I planned on making this character a cal assault and cal heavy, but I'm trying to avoid basing my plans on unreleased content. I did that with the rail rifle and that went south, quick. Grenades may be my safest choice, since she's going to use those regardless of build (not doing a commando again).
That said, this is the most upbeat I've been about a character since I can remember. Let's hope it continues :D |

tier 3 weapons aka ADV is how far you should go til 1.8
the GEK AR is a midlevel workhorse or was for many, by getting level 3 in AR it's not that big of a SP sink if you change your mind, plus everyone should have a GEK in their locker for it's versatility
many ADV weapons are used more than their proto version, like the MD is not worth the price and PG/CPU reqs to use the proto MD as it only does 6 more splash damage and is very expensive to run both price and reqs, there's the odd instance where it takes one more round than it would if it were proto, but giving up 6 dmg lets me run like 80 points more armor
oh yea the breach is good hipfire at a certain medium range.. i ran it in chrome for a while before i went MD, you rarely see them used anymore.

My favorite build near the end of 1.6 on Fox was:
- Scout suit - Swarm Launcher - SMG (Or your preferred racial equivalent) - Remote Explosives - Flux Grenades
This was not so good in 1.7 due to the Swarm Launcher being over nerfed and Scout suits dying so easily, but I expect both Swarm LauncherGÇÖs and Scout Suits to get buffed in 1.8. They are also adding more sidearms to meet your RP needs. Also Scouts are getting an extra equipment slot in 1.8, so you can add a Scanner.
Roles: - AV: Swarm Launcher, Flux Grenades, and Remote Explosives can be used in many combinations.
- Infiltration: You are fast and can sneak behind enemy lines to hack objectives. Then use Remote Explosives to take out the first guy to come back for the counter hack.
- Execution: I found most of my sidearm kills with this fit were from applying the SMG to the back of the head of someone who was hacking or shooting in the other direction.
- RE fun: With passive scanning (Gallente) or active scanner with other scouts, you can set all sorts of traps.
- Perimeter patrol: Seek out enemy Drop Uplinks and quickly destroy them with Flux Grenades.
Lots of other fun stuff you can do with this setup. Very versatile. Very fast. Stealthy. A fun all around fit.

You want either a Scout or a Logistics suit. Logistics are vital to the team, and with a great weapon that you are skilled at, you can dominate in combat. Scouts are speedy but still have an equipment slot. I like running Rifles/shotgun on my scout and keep a Nanite Injector or a Repair tool as well.

Most of your criteria leads me to think you want to hear Gallente shotgun scout... except for the part about being vital to the team.
I have the same issues with getting bored when forced into a role. To remedy this I dumped a lot of points into my sidearm (Toxin for me) and I spread points across light weapons as I see fit. (Assault suit, by the way) So even when I'm running a low level weapon, I've got the smg to fall back on in close range.
I can spawn into a match and play however I want. Weapon skills are fairly cheap compared to modules and dropsuits.
Recently, the most fun you can have is to start the match with swarms and weed out the vehicle wannabees from the real tank trolls. Then switch out to whatever weapon makes you happy at the moment.
