I don't use grenades often however i do use hives, REs, uplinks and soon enough cloaking units.
currently the grenade gets it's own slot that is bound to the left bumper I want that button for other things. my solution is to make grenades a piece of equipment. grenades will still be hard capped at one to prevent spam(capping the number of a mod that can be fitted is fairly common in eve). now grenades can be fit in any equipment slot and will be available via the circle select.
how does this free up the bumper?
simple the grenade slot is now a "bound equipment" slot and can fit ANY piece of equipment
wouldn't this alow suits an extra equipment slot at the cost of a grenade?
no, each suit will have a non grenade equipment cap preventing people from gaining a slot by not taking a grenade.
how would it work?
- hives and uplinks are easy you tap the bumper and toss one out instead of a grenade.
- cloaking units tap the bumper once to activate the unit, tap it again to deactivate it. otherwise wait for cool down to start.
- remotes tap to toss an explosive, press and hold to detonate it.
- rep tool press and hold to take out the tool which locks on and repairs a friendly unit when you release the bumper you put away the tool and auto switch back to your previous weapon.
- nanite injector (idk why you'd do this) tap the bumper over a corpse after reviving you switch back to your previous weapon.
this is will be a lot of work to implement and relatively confusing to people who don't have a firm grasp of fitting but I think it would absolutely be worth it. I am waging a one man war on the circle select because it is a terrible mechanic, sadly I don't really see a better solution to the problem of "more stuff than buttons"(KB/M users I can see that smug grin from here...) so for now it stays.
however, we can minimize the use of the damned circle select, if a logi uses hives ten times as often as is nades then he should be able to hotkey the hive because it's more useful than the nade. like wise if an assault player is reading this thinking "I like my nades where they are thank you" thats okay too put the nade in your bound equipment slot and carry on. I particularly like the bound rep tool idea and think it would be an awesome mechanic for logis so they have an option if they get caught with their tool out. of course for me the icing on the cake is the "crysis'-esque bound cloak which would be a life saver compared to fumbling around in that awful menu.

Wouldn't be simpler change the function of the 'throw grenade' key to 'use bound equipment.' or simply 'use equipment'
To bind something to that key, you pull up the radial and hit the 'use equipment' key
from then on until rebounded to something else tapping that key quick switches to that item.
No need to change dropsuits or grenades at all.

step one: tap the bumper to cloak.
step two: you are cloaked and something happens ... your previous weapon is restored [firing drops cloak immediately] ... your previous weapon is not restored [cloak must be dropped before rearming] this is CCP's design decision and I don't care either way
step three: tap the bumper again and cloak is dropped ... if not restored in step two, your previous weapon now is restored

It's good idea in the core but it will create a lot of problems. Grenades are often your last choice and you have to decide in mid fight what to do. You don't want to fight one and have to go to selection wheel to get a nade. Also is it quite problematic with the equipment as you often have to hold it and you simply can't be accurate when you use it without seeing it. That's like doing a 360 before you finally fire your gun.
Here an idea based on yours: Make L2 the button to switch to equipment and leave R2 for switching through weapons and grenades. It would not directly use it but you'd have it in your hands and use it with R1.
With cloaking CCP already did a step in the direction of Active Mods for infantry and they will have to be activated and selected as well which will likely be L2. L2 for all Low and Med Slots(atm: High Slots) and R2 for High Slots (atm: Weapon, Grenade and Equipment Slots) so this idea will be abandoned in a few months.
