I have had many people say they require tips on how to be a good sniper. So, here I decided to offer my tips and fittings which work for me.
Snipers are meant to be hard to find, this means they should
A - Not sit at the top of mounds etc (you stick out) B - DO NOT place nanohives or uplinks anywhere near where you are sniping (its a neon placemarker) C - Keep moving, do not let people determine your location D - Find the places that provide the best protection (the best places are not in the redline)
Profile dampeners and precision enhancers are a must
I use complex damage modifiers, but they may not be to your taste.
NEVER use a scout as a sniper (you will be one shotted)
I use 2 different suits for a sniper,
Fitting 1 (sneaky fit) - 2 profile dampeners 2 complex armour plates (you need to be able to take a few bullets from counter snipers) 1 enhanced armour repairer 2 precision enhancers 1 complex damage module Nanohive Remote explosive (because they like to shoot your corpse for some reason) Active scanner (you can never be too careful)
Fitting 2 (power pack) - 3 complex damage modules 2 CPU upgrades Charge sniper submachinegun
Feel free to ask any questions

May take on Sniping:
Fox Guide: Sniping, The Role of the Sniper Fox Guide: Marksman, Taking Sniper to the next level
Also, a Sniper that I often run with recently dropped out of the MCC at the beginning of a match and immediately killed a Dropship pilot as his Dropship was being delivered. When a LAV approached the Dropship, the Sniper killed the turret gunner on the LAV, and the LAV driver panicked and drove away. This deprived the other team of a Dropship in the important opening minutes of the match. That is the type of impact that a full time dedicated sniper can have on a match.

Fox's links are pretty much everything you could want to know about sniping successfully. Also a good read for those who would like to kill snipers successfully.
@Gacela Modesta: I prefer scout suits for the mobility. I usually use Gallente with profile dampeners so that even if someone comes looking for me, the only way to find me is visually. I know one of Fox's links is about using heavier suits to snipers instead of scouts. That works very well too but its not my personal taste.
As for rifle, tactical sniper rifle is the leading contender for general use. Most targets take more than one shot and the rapid follow up shot is gold. Charged is a good option too, especially if you can score consistent headshots. The standard sniper rifle is just not very good compared to the other two, unless its a thale's, then its just overkill in most cases. |

There is one piece of advice I consistently don't see when I look for it on sniper training threads. This device is to always have your secondary weapon out when running to a destination node or sniper's nest. When you are training to be a perfect sniper this is especially important. The only time you want your primary rifle out is AFTER you have reached your nest, set up your drop links / hives, analyzed your exit strategy, set up traps, provided intel to your team, scanned the battlefield for troop movements, and ascertained the best/ easiest / busiest target. only then would I recommend actually using your sniper rifle.
There are several reasons for this.
1 the main reason is shooting at a Target at close to mid-range with a sniper rifle especially in Dust where you can't use tricks such as quick scoping very easily is a crap shoot at best. you want your secondary pistol out at almost all times as it will improve your skill with your side arm which is invaluableas well as keep you from having to scope down with a sniper rifle on a target that's too close you will have issues because the target will be moving too fast or jumping. now this is not to say that you cannot shoot short and mid range targets with a sniper rifle people do it all the time. but if you are going into a situation planning to shoot a sniper rifle at a mid or closee range target you will most likely fail. oh well and headshot with a pistol will go much further against close targets than a sniper rifle ever will. also a pistol is much easier to aim at close range. do not ever hip fire with a sniper rifle.
2 the second reason for this is a primary sniper rifle eats up a great deal of what we call in the MMO genre: screen real estate. you literally will not see some of your targets flanking you because the gun will visually block them.
3 there is a fun factor to using the pistol for all short to mid-range kills that you do not want to miss as a sniper. the best snipers are just as deadly with a pistol as any assault or Heavies because they are thinking accuracy while those other classes are thinking firepower. when choosing pistol always go for accuracy over stopping power. the best ideal situation is to have both. I cannot overemphasize how fun it is to switch out of a long scopes situation to defend your nest at close range and going PAP PAP pap into someones face before they can even fired their scary assault rifle and then go right back to what you were doing. I would go so far as to say pistol wing is half of the snipers art. you will hear a lot of snipers talking about protecting nodes and very close ranges as it benefits the team the best, the pistol is generally what enables a sniper to be able to do this.
4. using pistol ammo to down a target while traveling is much more preferable to wasting sniper rounds for two reasons: a pistol is quieter and sounds more like the normal sounds you would hear in a battle, firing a sniper round is very distinctive and we'll set you apart as a high priority target right away. the second reason is you may not always have a fitting that will replenish your primary ammo and this is something to be taken into consideration.
5 having your sniper rifle out provides Intel to the enemy whereas a pistol does not. everyone on the field generally has some sort of secondary like a pistol or an SMG. running around with a sniper rifle showing is like putting a big red cross hair on your back they're going to prioritize you. if you run around with a pistol they will actually lower their priority on you if you are close to other targets because you represent less of an immediate threat.
6. in most games you can run faster with a pistol equipped then you can with a big heavy rifle I am not clear as to whether dust uses this system I have never tested it but dust is very concise and technical I would imagine it's probably faster to run to a destination with a pistol equipped than it is with a rifle.
7. with good first person shooters such as dust or battlefield it is paramount to use every bit of your equipment to its up most potential
it can be very difficult to train your brain to only have a pistol equipped except for when you're ready to take your shots it is definitely a style and it will differentiate differentiate you from other snipers in terms of skill. when you feel you have mastered pistols it is time to learn to kill a target with a sniper rifle at close range as a sniper rifle has much more stopping power this to me is this ceiling of the sniper skillsets. once you have mastered how to kill a close range target with a scope on a sniper rifle just as effectively as you can with a pistol you are ready for some world class sniping this takes time for some. sometimes years. you will see a lot of debate on the forums about how effective a sniper can really be for their team in my experience a world-class sniper is usually the team leader and is writing the free of battle along with everybody else and has much higher kills to death ratio and much more situational awareness than most other classes on the battlefield. people who say snipers cannot benefit their team as much or more than other classes in my experience are trying to get you to quit sniping because they know how annoying and effective a good sniper can be if you listen to them you are falling victim to stinking thinking. There is room for every class in these games to excel to the utmost be a team leader and win games by themselves.
one final tip drop ships are your friends you can use a cheap drop ship to fly to the top of almost any building including the MCC in the map. the glory of dust is how well made these maps actually are and I feel that most neighbors constrict themselves in their thinking to being stuck on the grounds or climbing ladders do not forget there is vehicles in this game and yes you do need to use them even if it is wasteful. |
