One of the repercussions, as in unintended consequences, of being a clone mercenary in New Eden is that you can discover people you have gotten to know on the IGS, on the battlefield in your crosshairs. Of course that does not impact you pulling the trigger, but it does play havoc with your emotions. We are all professional soldiers, that is a given, but the little knot in your stomach tightens when a familiar name scrolls by after you just finished off an adversary. As a squad leader sometimes you've focused the efforts of the five other mercs under your command to eliminate someone who turns out being a person you've had extensive debates with in the IGS channel.
That happened to me today, after the battle was done, I sent an email to my adversary and told him that he had performed well on the battlefield even if sadly, on the losing side, from my point of view. This highlighted to me how unique are circumstances are as clone mercs. One moment you can be breaking bread with a fellow merc in a station eatery and the next day repeatedly killing him in combat.
Some might surmise that isk & aur payments determine who and what we care about as a merc but in my case that is not a deciding factor. Once I accept a contract it becomes a point of personal pride that I do my best to fulfill the obligation to the best of my abilities. Friends who accept contracts that place themselves in opposition to my contractual obligations do so at their own peril, on the battlefield the only friends that matter for the duration of the fight are those who are on my side.
So to all those who wonder if we are cold hearted killing machines that release a frenzy of ferocious unfeeling violence upon everything that crosses our paths, stand corrected, we do feel, we are aware that the pain and death we inflict is horrible. We carry the emotional weight of it with us, but it is a job we have chosen to do, do not expect us to take pity on those who oppose us.
Sure they all have back stories and families and communities that spawned them, but that is of small concern during a firefight, they have been reduced to obstacles or threats to my squad mates and the successful completion of a contract we have accepted. It is not personal it's business.

For me war and killing is something I force myself to endure for the greater good of mankind in the Eve Cluster. As long as the evil of the amarr slave cult empire is allowed to exist all of humanity is at risk.
So I do get a knot in my stomach when I kill another human being even if it be a foul amarrian, because I will not sacrifice my humanity in the process of eradicating evil. I will not revel in the violence I must commit to slow and stop the spread of the amarr empire and their devil's spawn supplicant allies. I bring a very strategic workmanlike ethic to the battlefield, eliminate threats, eliminate targets, secure the victory, one step, one shot at a time.

As for that last remark....that there indicates how ignorant of this galaxy you are. The Amarr seek to teach, bring their knowledge, their stability, Faith to the peoples beneath the heavens. We take so that we may instruct, once that noble purpose is complete, the people are free to go. However what the Nation does is strip you of your very being, what you are is destroyed and replaced with the will of a narcissistic soul with a god complex. As to those defeats you say were handed to us....you should know at no time have the Amarr ever committed more than a fraction of their full strength to a conflict. Not during Vak' Atioth, where a single command of 200 ships were present, and not even when the Minmatar Elder fleet invaded who were routed embarrassingly by the battered remains of the Sarum Houses fleets. If the Amarr ever chose to commit their full military might to a conflict I can only imagine victory is assured.
