I recently read this thread asking for changes to Assault Dropships (ADS).
And to be honest, with the tank prices and effectiveness the way that it is, these changes were pretty reasonable. ADS prices are too high for what you get, and they have very few ways to protect themselves against a very prevalent hard counter - rail tanks.
The problem I saw, however, was the increased focus on improving the power of a vehicle that only requires one player to be effective. This is troubling to me.
It feels both wrong and destructive to DUST's ambitions that Tanks and - through the lens of my link post - dropships are seen as tools that one person should be able to wield with extreme effectiveness. I think that there should more more emphasis, either through bonuses or the actual power of the components of the vehicle itself, on vehicles being more powerful when more people are manning the craft.
I believe that, when manned, regular dropships should be more damaging and/or effective than ADS. AI and AV tanks should be significantly more powerful than a tank with one player. And this trend should be reproduced in all coming vehicles.
In order to do this, many other systemic changes would need to be made.
- LAVs would have to accommodate players firing out of the passenger seat, so that every player could contribute to the LAVs effectiveness when it was fully manned.
- Players and/or squads would need a way to request a dropship to come to their location and to either move them to a more tactically important position, or to attack a particular target.
- Tanks would need to have their damage for main cannons drastically reduced so that in order to preform at the level that they do, they require more people manning the vehicle.
- All vehicles require vehicle locks in the way that GTAV Online does it. Vehicles users can toggle their vehicles between: open to everyone, open to corp mates, open to corp+squad mates, open to no one
This list is by no means comprehensive or complete, but I think that it is necessary to put more emphasis on the team element of DUST.

Zirzo Valcyn wrote:a fully loaded ADS with 1 gunner and the rest hotdroppers of AV and slayers would go much farther than just a lone pilot. the problem is most players want to run the gun game from point to point while crying that no one has their back and dying like 10x while screaming at vehicle drivers calling them pus'sies and what not. i would love to have an actual competent crew to shuttle around, insert and extract. but no one has the patience tho or at least 4 guys with the patience are not all on at once.
What you wrote is true. It is also a different and unique idea from the one I was getting at.
I think that a squad with an ADS, AV, and AI troops would be effective because of the diversity in their squad composition. Not because the dropship itself was more effective with the whole squad in it.
What I'm looking for is this: A fully manned vehicle should out preform its lone operator counterpart in every role.
In a regular dropship, every person within the dropship should be able to contribute to increasing the performance of the dropship. Say that dropships get some form of countermeasures tomorrow. And of the many varieties, there is one type that disables missiles by hacking into the targeting system of the missiles and de-activating them.
A solo pilot can use this, no problem. Luckily for this pilot, he has a teammate with L5 hacking. The dropship has a special panel that allows the player to see what's happening outside of the ship (a small camera or something). By focusing his reticule on a particular missile, he's able to destroy it or have it track enemy vehicles until it explodes.
Another example: CCP is on a roll, and implements cloaking for dropships the same day. Dropships have a shimmer effect tied to their speed. Our same pilot, after narrowly escaping a hail of missiles, wants to double back and attack the source of the missiles stealthily. Our pilot has someone with L5 Cloaking. After doing [insert amusing or 'cool' task here], the dropship pilot can now throw his cloak into overdrive and be virtually invisible for a shorter period, or have an extended, more visible cloak.
The point is that the vehicle should be more powerful because it has more people in it.

However, everything should always be better with teamwork. I believe 2 is the magic number for scout teamwork. Any more of them and not only are you less stealthy, but you're taking away from the numbers of frontliners that are drawing the attention of the enemy.
I agree, but I'm talking specifically about vehicles. I think an HAV with 3 people in it should really out-preform an HAV with one person driving it.
