To begin, as we all know, the Plasma Cannon is under-performing when compared to other weapons. But don't allow this to discourage you. With some practice and elbow grease, the Plasma Cannon can still be a great tool and very important asset to hold on the battlefield. Hopefully this will help those interested in using Plasma Cannons and guide them onto the correct path.
General Uses & Operation
Fitting The Plasma CannonCompared to the other AV weapons, the fitting requirements for Plasma Cannons can range from moderate, to extremely high, depending on your suit. The compromise is that they utilize 0 PG across all tiers. The bad part about this, is the fact that along with other AV weapons, Plasma Cannons are alpha weapons and depend on Damage Modifiers for efficiency, which is also CPU intensive.
This problem does have a solution. The Gallente Assault suit has a fitting reduction bonus to Hybrid Weapons, which encompasses the Plasma Cannon. Another solution, is to invest in the Fitting Reduction skill. Though it does require Proficiency IV, Proficiency is something that you will need with PLCs anyway.
AimingThis seems to be the hardest part about using the plasma cannon. It's long travel time, spool, and arc requires your shots to be well timed and aimed if you want a kill. But don't let this discourage you, as it can be managed with a bit of practice. Just picture a Breach Mass Driver combined with an 80GJ Railgun.
Because of this, it''s best used as in CQC (Close Quarters Combat) and as a "rocket propelled" shotgun.
What To Use Alongside ItNanohives - If you are using it against infantry units, then it's always best to carry a Nanohive with you. 9 Shots won't do much for you, and there is nothing worse than being flanked and realizing that your Plasma Cannon is empty.
Flux Grenades - Yes, while the Plasma Cannon does have a damage multiplier towards shields (+10%), in most situations you will have barely cut through an enemy's shields if you don't manage to score a direct hit. With the shields gone, you have less HP to deal with. Along with this, nothing will confuse the enemy more than a blue cloud of smoke that also wipes an entire bar of their HP.
AV Grenades - When you are fighting a tank (especially shielded ones), then AV grenades are your best friend once their shields are down. Lai Dais will pack a punch when the vehicle is unhardened, and can act as a perfect finisher.
Remote Explosives - Yet another great tool when fighting HAVs. If you manage to sneak up on the tank, place the remote explosives and then use the Plasma Cannon to punch or wipe it's shields. Pop the explosives and you've just scored 200 WP, and a sense of accomplishment. While this is all fun and great, you will need a squad member or supply depot once you run out of ammo.
Sidearms - While there are many players who have mastered the Plasma Cannon and don't rely on a sidearm, you most likely aren't one of them. Until you can consistently land direct hits, a sidearm is quite literally your best friend.
