Lets look at it this way:
Bolt Pistol: 54 optimal, 72 effective, 6 shots in the clip, full-auto 891 damage over 2.4 seconds, 371 DPS
Ion Pistol: 24 optimal, 42 effective, 12 shots in the clip, single shot 660 damage over 2.16 seconds (or however long it takes you to depress the trigger 12 times), 305 DPS
So the ion pistol gets half the range with almost 70 less DPS and an almost useless charge shot (considering a charge shot overheats the weapon). |

Ones that can be used as weapons by themselves (knives) and ones that are simply backup after running out of ammo (flaylocks)
All sidearms should be designed with 1 role or the other in mind. By the sound of it, the ion pistol is meant to be used by itself.
I disagree, I think each side arm should have the ability to operate as effectively as a light weapon in it's niche situation. The counter balance being it's use is situational (i.e. short range) and limited spare ammo. A side arm isn't just a finishing weapon but also something you can fall back on once you run out of ammo for your main weapon. It won't last that long due to limited ammo or being overly situational but should be enough that hopefully you can get to a nanohive or supply depot.
That being the case the Ion pistol needs improvement, personally I don't understand why the damage and clip size of the ion pistol vs bolt pistol aren't switched. The bolt pistol has more range so it should have a longer TTK because you have a better ability to dictate the engagement vs a close range, high damage weapon that has a lower TTK because it's ability to determine engagement range is very limited. Isn't this weapon balance 101? |

Zeylon Rho wrote:At STD level, the Ion pistol charge shot does 350 damage. The damage on a Thales Sniper Rifle is 355. The damage on a "Charge" Sniper Rifle is 322 or so. Both of those are PRO level, and the Ion PRO has a single shot dmg of 385, higher than both.
With 3 complex dmg mods and prof 5, the charge shot becomes 560 dmg, and a Gallente commando with 1 complex dmg mod would do 535 dmg with it. If it has a "standard" headshot bonus (like the AR, shotgun, etc.) that's 1.5x. That's 840 damage in the former case, and 803 in the latter. That's enough to 1-shot almost any suit in the game.
The commando bonus doesn't apply, that is only light weapons not sidearms. On top of that you now have a slow suit whose engagement range is 20 meters and each shot takes a full second and a half. |
