Ya know CCP, I've been telling you this since the beta, but you just don't ******* get it do you?
If you let 6 proto gods, two of whom are in tanks, join into a pub room with nothing but soloing randoms on the other side it's going to be a redline fest every damned time.
There's a couple of things that have to be taken as fact regarding most PSN FPS players: 1) They are completely inept. No...really. A sorrier lot of worthless douchebags cannot be found under a collective banner. Think of the dumbest blue dot you've ever seen and then figure that there are others even dumber than that. 2) They don't have mics 3) They don't go to message boards 4) The vast majority of them don't know what PC is, and even if they did they have no desire to partake in it since they aren't hardcore gamers. 5) The only EvE they are familiar with is "Summer's" 6) The ones that are from EvE are some of the worst blue dots out there. 7) They can't find even the most simple of objectives. I know this because I've spent all day waiting for them to come along with me to an objective only to watch them meander off in the opposite direction at the point of no return and get slaughtered by guys in ADV gear after they've torn me apart on the button.
Today was just horrible...I saw whole teams (not in tanks) go negative 5 or 6 times. And not kind of negative. I mean 1/17.
This is not just a result of the lackluster play of the blue dots. It's the fact that on the kill feed I see the same 4 or 6 guys committing wholesale blue dot genocide and every feed starts with "Boundless", or "Kaalikota", or Ishkune etc. The guys running around 4 to 6 deep running proto gear are sending the blue dots (and myself) screaming to the redline. I can't even get out in a fully tanked 7-8K HP without getting ganked by three other tanks/assault Dropships.
And again, this isn't a few games, this was over the course of five hours.
How long do you think someone that has zero investment in this game is going to keep sticking it out once they figure out that their skill means next to nothing compared to the gear they don't have and won't acquire for months? They're dumb, but they aren't THAT dumb.
And it's fully likely that before they have that epiphany that they've completely borked their toon's skill tree.
DUST is a massive uphill battle in a lot of ways. The "War Academy" is a nice gesture but at the end of the day is a damned joke. Throwing guys still primarily in Militia gear against PC players that are earning 100 million a week and can actually afford to go isk negative in pub rooms and not care about it one lick...maybe the game should be renamed to Dickmove514; because that's all it really is.
There is no "HTFU", or "Adapt or Die"...there is no adaptation to be had, just scores of players going negative and they quit playing the game. It's not a matter of skill, or "grinding", it's the fact that they can't even be competitive. I like the new lower TTK, but when you're playing with a max EHP under 400 and going against guys that can press the trigger twice and reduce you to a faint memory...eventually players aren't going to care about leveling or proficiency...they just want to be able to compete and know they aren't set up to fail.
Where are the numbers CCP? You're keeping them. What does the "average" dust player look like hours wise? Have they been released? If they're good or in your favor, why not? I figure since the numbers aren't posted, they support the claims being made that this game can't retain a player base.
And why is that? Massive built in imbalance. Newbs being throw in against proto stomping PC quality players makes this game ZERO fun. At some point the model for Dust starts feeling more and more like a facebook game than a groundbreaking RPG FPS.
Get your act together and separate the newbs from the vets or for the love of all that's holy have an ADV or lower game mode or just be prepared to become a "coulda been" failure on the scale of MAG and Brink.

Skirmish with some DOM mixed in. 5 hours...maybe 5 or 6 wins. It was like every time I was on the side that didn't have the 4-6 tryhards. Some games I had no choice after loosing two or three tanks to hot tank on tank on tank on tank action reducing my Gunnlogi's and Madrugar's to so much scrap...I just grabbed a free suit and AFK farmed while surfing the net. After I while I even quit being mad....I was simply amazed.

Never in all of my years as a gamer have I belonged to a message board that seems to be so intelligent yet REPEATEDLY MISSES THE ******* POINT.
It's not about me, or how horrible I did (and trust me there were some pretty horrible games). I chose not to run proto gear all the time and when I find myself facing the uber groups I drop my gear down a notch further and go where ever they aren't or try to support the team by dropping uplinks (which they never have) and wait for a random blue dot to run into an objective to help him out. Invariably the proto team still finds me....why? I'm the only one trying and quite often I'm the last man standing. But that's my choice and one I make knowingly.
But again, the ENTIRE ******* POST IS NOT ABOUT ME.
GOD....just how ******* ******** and mentally deficient are you fuckstains?
IT'S ABOUT THE BLUE DOTS.
They're idiots, they suck, we all know this...but that wasn't the point I was making. The point is that the game HAS TO ACCOUNT FOR IT. It currently DOES NOT.
All FPS games, and most games in general, count on the knuckle dragging, mouth breathing brand of douchebags called the casual gamer to fill their ranks. BF, COD, all of them.
If you make the game so they cannot even feel the slightest bit effective they simply will not play the game. As much as I openly detest them, we need them. Need them buying boosters and starterpacks etc in order for the game to maintain it's longevity. As soon as they figure out it's about gear spam and pay to win, they'll either go the RND route or they'll drop the game completely.
Non-proto gear rooms, however it can be done, need to be made available for ISK. Maybe even at a reduced rate. If the point of the game is not to have fun, but to grind the **** out of the player base, there won't be a playerbase because PSN FPS players don't usually enjoy the grind.
It's game. You're supposed to enjoy it. Doesn't mean it needs to be EZ Mode (KRR cough cough). But it means that there has to be some sense of "I have a chance!" Currently there is none for these guys.
And to the jack ass that keeps harping on "there is no such thing as a negative KDR"...you're not smarter than everybody, you're just a snarky little **** with a keyboard. STFU and GTFO.

in fact, with 100 more concurrent player's we'll pass our 6 month peak.
so... fail thread.
I'm sorry, are you referring to this link here which shows a steady decrease in activity since the last year? You're talking about 100 more concurrent players when we're picking up 500ish a week....think about this for just one moment....
500 players a week...new...max online in the last 24 hours...4200ish. Yet this game picks up HALF that amount in a week as new guys. Or in other words...4000 new players join every 2 months....and still can't sustain over 5K at peak playing times.
That's what you call a fail, not this post.
Stop reading the press and read the damn numbers.

It is impossible to have a negative kdr. In your example, 1/17 = 1 divided by 17 = 0.0588235294117647 repeated which can never be negative. In the very least aspect, kdr can be 0, but nothing less than that. also, LOL'd "going negative" refers to the K-D spread, not KDR. K-D spread is literally Kills - Deaths = K-D spread, or your contribution to the clone out. Someone who goes 1/17 has a -16 k-d spread. They went negative.
For the love of all things...
Allow me to settle this debate:
K/D is seen as W/L in sports. If you are sub .500 with your W/L you are considered as having a losing season. Thus, a negative W/L ratio. This is then applied to K/D as well....every Kill is seen as a Win, and every Death is seen as a loss. Thus a 1 to 1 ratio is seen as hitting .500, even though it is technically 1.00
This is how KDR came to be...it was based off of Sports analogies do to the competitive nature of FPS.
It has nothing to d with math and every thing to do with context. Got it? Good.

Justicar Karnellia wrote:I'd say your post is spot on and sums it up well. I'm pretty sure CCP know there is an issue with the NPE, and I've always maintained that they have to work it from two angles
1) Flesh out a mature, balanced and enjoyable multiplayer experience 2) Provide an interesting, structured single-player experience
As you can see, the number 1 is well on it's way, although they have balance issues and number 2 is nowhere to be found. Until they introduce some PvE elements, there will poor player retention. This is of course, a race against time too - the game is free to play, so once you've played it and "ditched" it - you don't really come back, unless it's a year or two later just to "check it out". But of course, in a year or two, PS3 will definitely be a "last-gen" platform - technically it is already - current gen is now PS4, not a console released in 2006.
Lets just hope that urgency translates into action somewhere down the line.
I'm not really seeing the "race against time" from CCP. In fact far from it. They release a new thing, wait a while, flesh it out, nerf three other things, then throw some boosters on sale.
What they should be doing is go hell bent for leather to release all of the content.; dropsuits, ships, tanks, guns; installations etc. Just get it out there. Yes it's going to break balance. But who cares, the game is imbalanced as it is. Let it run for a month or two, do a re calibration, nerf, buff, and tweak as they think best fit, give that two weeks, respec everyone, and call the game complete. After that start working on PVE.
Let's just rip the band aid off instead of doing this stuff piece meal. Go back to an "alpha state" for the devs and start unloading new material. And boosters on sale.

Enemy score average 1/15. Though it is alot of fun to proto stomp, I agree with you. I would prefer to have more of a challenge as a PC hardcore gamer. Rather than scare away the new guys and have no playerbase. CCP just make a noob game mode.
Almost forgot to respond to this...
Don't feel bad. You're not cheating or glitching or even exploiting. This is how CCP designed the game. It's their screw up, let them take the heat.
The best FPS experiences I've had are in close games...public, CB,s whatever...those are always the most fun. MAG Beta, I was on the Valor team that actually beat SVER's Domination map...for the ONLY time during the beta....beat em with like a minute to go or so...absolutely exhilarating.
That's the kind of gaming I'm looking for. In this unbalanced crapheap we call DUST...it's just as absent as it is from COD/BF.

Zounds.
Some good points made here in the last couple of pages. A couple of things I want to address...I apologize for not remembering the authors individually....
To the guy a few posts previous to this one that listed KBM support as one of his "talking points"...The hell is wrong with you? I'm sitting here talking about PSN/PS3 blue dot player retention and you come with KBM support as a reason why the playerbase retention is bad? Seriously? Just WOW. Yeah cuz the MILLIONS of PS3 players out there...it's the first thing on their minds when purchasing a game. I'm just sure that before purchasing BF3 and COD they pause and ask themselves..."I dunno man...I hear the support for that thing I'll NEVER use is kinda spotty...best move onto a diff game." PS3 uses DS3 controllers....that's what PS3 users use. Granted, as they are gamers, if there was a massive advantage to using KBM, many would.
Issue here is that making the KBM rig anything other than a playing alternative...a player preference....breaks the game before a shot it fired or a suit is built. It flat out MUST not out perform it's DS3 counterpart....no matter how badly you may want it to, you self important ass.
Let's try putting my OP in another perspective... Let's say you screwed up (or whatever) and created a toon with lelvel 4 Shield Extension and lvl 5 Handheld upgrades. How many of you are going to use the Enhanced SE over the damage modifer? Damn few. Why? Because CDM's are way better than ADV SE's.
In short, it's the proto gear; stupid. It's massively better than it's ADV counterparts in a lot of ways. The difference between STD and ADV is not as large.
There's also one other thing about FPS players that hasn't been brought up on these forums. I will try to explain it from the viewpoint of an imaginary player we'll call...Announcer4ThaDeceased. Any Similarity to Persons Living or Dead Is Purely Coincidental.
So our hero, A4TD has been playing FPS's for years and years and according to him, not ONCE has he EVER been killed because he was outshot. Thousands, if not tens of thousands of players have "gotten lucky", or "lagged out", or "******* cheated" etc. But rest assured not a SINGLE of his countless deaths have EVER been legit. Can you imagine the full on rage this player has playing a game like DUST where he's not only killed by the regular BS in FPS games (and let's face it hit detection 'round here ain't what it should be) but gets straight owned by 1100 HP logi's? The question is not when does he throw his controller, but how far away does it land.
Let me try, once again, to explain what I'm throwing down.
1) This is not an FPS with RPG elements, this is a full blown RPG with an FPS platform, as such it has massive built in imbalances. 2) Most PS3/FPS players are not going to be along for that ride if they are going to continually get ganked and go 0/10 for months 3) This does not mean the overall game has to be dumbed down. Not even close to it. What needs to occur is a way to placate both crowds....the ones really into Dust, and the casual FPS player in Dust.
The reason why that has to happen is pretty simple. The goal here is not to shield the new players forever, but to make it so they don't rage quit in the first week. Allow them to breathe and grow and maybe...just maybe...some of them want to tkae their DUST gameplay to the next level. They join a corp like Faction Warfare Army, then immediately seek employment elsewhere once they realize they have made a terrible move. SO they land in a better corp, they then get inside info on how to spec their toon and their rigs. Later, they might even get into PC.
Pissing off the new players will not retain the new players. They will not buy AURUM items if they are not playing the game.
I understand there are fears of splitting the playerbase and that the playerbase is too small to afford the split...but that's thinking backwards and is the kind of policy that sinks video game companies.
4000 screaming newbs join every two months and it looks like the game can't even keep a 10th of them.
Give those newer players a chance to get into the game before you set them out to be slaughtered buy Viziam this and Boundless that. This isn't to say that every one of them will stick around and become new PC participants, but increases the pool that will. 12 And to address the "Well, maybe DUST just isn't for them". One huge problem with that statement. If DUST had been put out for PC, you could state that all day and be right. But it wasn't. It's on PS3, so some pandering to the blue dots must be done to keep them involved.
To me, the biggest obstacle to that is the way the current playerbase is thrown in against the pubstampers. Find a way to separate the two before we wake up to find the same 10k players are always on and don't bother to by the booster packs anymore and that will kill the game. Why? Simple: AURUM Makes money for CCP. With no money, there is no game. Period.
They'd ban me, but I'm too funny and more importantly, I'm right.
