One year agoGǪ. at exactly this timeGǪ. Evolution-7 was born.
My trials and tribulations with this game.
I am a MAGgot, a ex-Eve Online player 2005-2007 (stopped because my PC couldnGÇÖt handle it after Trinity patch, yes I had a really crappy PC), a ex BFBC2 and BF3 player. A veteran of the Ace Combat series. A veteran of Warhawk and Starhawk. And a COD player from time to time.
I found out about dust in 2009 when I was watching the EVE fanfest stream. In 2012 my ps3 was in for repair for 4 months of August to December, at this time period the -ú15 mercenary pack deal newly came out.
I do have a lot of dust experience of closed beta from my brothers ps3 on his char while he was at university. Been a player of dust since May 2012 (not on this char) when I found on the eve forums that the codes were available from PS Home. I didnGÇÖt bother when I got my ps3 back in January to buy it as open beta was 5 days away. I created this char on day one of open beta as there was a wide respec and my brothers avatar name sucked and he need asked for his ps3 back a few days earlier. I am not someone who just found the game while browsing the PS store or heard it from my friends.
During closed beta, times were tough, especially for a player like me who was reluctant to join a corporation. I honed my dropship skills then to what they are today. Then, I remember getting the assault vk.0 from just 2 weeks of playing (there used to be no cap and the sp from each match was very high, 20 000-40 000 SP per match un-boosted. From May 2012 to April 2013 I was a solo player, no corporation, nothing. I felt like a TRUE mercenary then. I didnGÇÖt care about KDR, I didnGÇÖt care if I got shot down in my Eryx by AV 5 times in a row or blown up in my Sagaris. IGÇÖd just play and earn the ISK back. I remember the Caldari prime event, god, good times.
Anyway, I felt like a true mercenary from replication till the end of chromosome. I enjoyed dust from May 2012 till date, gameplay wise even with all the bugs. What killed the mercenary experience was me beginning to squad up and hear people **** talk CCP. Thats what ruined it. Also the old battle music.
Then when certain asshats take what you have, it ruins it further. And the open and closed beta nostalgia does not help either.
Most of the mercenaries I met from beta have moved on. Sucks, but it happens, many of the real dust vets will understand what I am talking about.
I miss the old days, theyGÇÖll never be back.
Its been a hell of a ride.
What is your story?

I normally play RPGs. Daggerfall, Morrowind are the first to come to mind. I dabbled in FPSs as well. I remember playing Wolfenstein, and making maps, as well as sitting on my dads lap as he played DOOM.
I had never played an online fps before. I saw DUST in the PlayStation store, and noticed it was free. At the time, the build was Chromosome.
I played it, and had no idea what I was doing. I tried being a sniper, and failed. Having lots of RPG experience, I knew my character was screwed early on. I ran through four or five characters before I got worthwhile results in a build.
And I've been underpowered from the start. Armour tanker in chrome. Armour tanker before the last buff. Minmatar scout. HMG heavy during the dark ages.
It all seems like a blur, now. Heck, that's how the past four years seem. I'm surprised I can still recall anything. |

Fine.
I also came from MAG being one of the only real FPS games I actually enjoyed. BF3 for me was more of a side show and I never got into it too much....but for the most part I came rom RPG games, especially the older ones like Tales of Symphonia, Final Fantasy, a bit of the old Dragon Age Origins, and possibly the best gaming franchise of all time......The Souls Series AKA Demon's Souls and Dark Souls.
While I was never a good PVPer in any FPS I was one of the better ones in DKS, and possibly alongside two of the other co founders of the Gravesworn the most notoriously douchebaggy Gravelord in the game, starting a player Made and run User Covenant with the express purpose to teach players how to Gravelord and then how to troll the living **** out of Sunbro's and normal casual players just wanting to finish the game....
Unlike other game I was in a couple of US based tournaments, a few forum based tournaments, and many massive forum run events, including the Tomb of the Giants Crusade, a PvP Inter User Covenant 3 day event, the Painted War a massive almost 50 participant strong Event, at which time I wrote sort of the Official Lore of the event, and was a part of the coalition thrashing of the Noble Knights and Life Hunters in the Duke's Archives.
Besides that I only heard of Dust when a player left playing DKS to join the Closed Beta, which I considered joining, but at the time had no interest......until I watched the trailer....
Ever since them I've been playing Dust.
My First toon was Viral-23,followed by Viral23, then ViralEnsign23, then finally settled on Harkon Vysarii where I joined the Dead Six Intiative which was a loose, Caldari Aligned, Fun group of players....which admittedly was never really cut out for PC since we were too......odd to bother with the stress of PC.
After the CEO mysteriously vanished into the night I left Dead Six and joined PIE under True Adamance.
My calling is clear to me. Smite you dirty Minmatar rebels, then move on to re-educating the Gallente.

My 1 year is actually coming up in 2 days!
I'm kind of looking forward to it, I'm going to play Dust in my birthday suit.
I really will for a couple of matches.
I have seen many of the same things you have OP. I still cringe when I hear lasers, PTSD from the old Viziams.
Grats on your year of Dust!

First of all, I hate you in dropships! LOL! But definitely a good game. You were like a bee hovering over the objective as if it was pollen...and stinging whoever got too close to it.
Okay, here's my story:
Heard about EVE online and always kept an eye on it. Huge fan of science fiction and sci fi games. I never had a elite running PC, just a PC that does the minimal for what I need. Needless to say, I never played EVE. Wanted to, but couldn't.
Fast forward in time and I'm hearing about a tie in game to the EVE universe. A FPS title that will revolutionize the FPS MMO experience. I place Dust 514 on my radar and wait for its arrival.
When it did come, I didn't automatically jump in. I read in a article that the beta was open and all that was needed to gain access was to purchase a merc pack. I say, "aw man" but it really wasn't a big deal. Lo and behold, I forget about Dust 514.
Months past and I notice an aritcle about EVE. It reminds me of Dust 514 so I go looking for it. I read that Dust 514 is now open to all and its out of beta. Excited, I immediately download the client.
Firing up Dust 514 for the first time, I am asked for the name of my mercenary. I think for a considerable amount of time. I always name my characters a name that will define their persona. My first thought is of the god of war, Ares. But the name is too short and I need a full name. So I start thinking about war gods and war angels. Then it hits me, the Archangel Michael. Chosen to fight for justice, having the highest of honor of God to lead his army into battle. Michael Arck is born.
So I take a gander at all the options and stuff. I'm impressed by the sophisticated layout. It feels more "mature" than other FPS games, just from the aesthetic. When I looked at the skill tree (the old version, not the one we have now), I am instantly intimidated. What is nanohives? Dropsuit commands? "Would you like to know more?" Yes, but I don't want you explaining it to me.
After squandering some SP, I head into battle. The controls are different. My muscle memory keeps switching the weapon on accident expecting another function. The feel of the mercenary is different. His "weight" feels slightly heavier than other characters on FPS games. Then lasers burn me to a crisp.
Okay, my first death. But as I go on, it certainly isn't my last. I'm finding out early on that my dropsuit is inadequate. After the disappointing loss, I go back to my skill screen. Again, I'm looking at it like WTF but I begin to notice some stuff. I play for a few more weeks and I just get pissed one day. I will never forget it. I was on Manus Peak and guys would climb to the peaks and laser me to death. I couldn't hide anywhere. They were cornering us. I leave the match pissed. Vowed never coming back to Dust 514.
Several days past by and I keep thinking about Dust. I begin asking myself questions. Why I don't like the game? Why is it so brutal?
I answer my own questions.
I do like the game, I just don't like getting whooped on. Well, haven't I read about the brutality of New Eden and know the many stories EVE players have shared explaining so? So I know why its brutal. So with that said, I need to tough it out. Learn from my mistakes. Don't approach this as every other shooter you approached. Unlearn what you have learned. And let's see if there is a forum or youtube video that can help explain.
So I go to youtube and start watching vids. I jump back into Dust 514 and the brutality continues but this time I'm determined to get better. I lick my wounds and fight on. After some videos and forum reading, I realized I squandered SP on stupid stuff. So I just play with my MLT fits until I get a good handle on what to do with my remaining two million SP.
One day I have a match and I stayed close to a heavy. He was mowing down guys and whoever would try to round him, I would open fire and drop em. This goes on for the entire match. His name is Tuffy Johnson and invites me to his corporation Sephiroth Clones. I decide to join up because I know there's strength in numbers. Shadow Soldier begins showing me the ropes, explaining the skill tree, what's best for an assault player and such.
Then one day, it just clicked. Everything fell into place. Enemies were falling before me. And I was gaining the top of the killboards. No, I'm not a great player but I do hold my own in matches.
And now, here we are, 2014 and I'm glad that I stuck it out. Met some great folks in my career here in New Eden. I experienced some memorable battles and some epic beatdowns. Dust 514 has been a great experience for me. It might not be the game for everybody, but I love what CCP has come up with.

I think it was at the back end of June 2012 Snagman 313 came into being. I had been offshore far too long and things at home had to take priority again, so I also needed a new outlet and my brother had been keeping me up to date on this new then game Dust 514.
Honestly when I first started I didn't know what I was getting into, I had some COD experience but not much as most of my gaming was fairly casual for the last 10 years or so mostly Command and Conquer series and a few other titles in between.
I lacked the required motor skills to be a true run and gun player so began looking to the heavy to help supplement my firepower until I was a better player. After building up SP and speccing into some bits and pieces I found my calling, the Forge Gun this was right around the time NPC corp battles where being lined up.
I cut my teeth in some of the most insanely OP matches you can believe against some of the nicest opponents I've had the pleasure to meet. Sir Meode and myself would duel constantly and few would interfere in our little gentleman's game, there just seemed to be a bit more heart and soul back then.
Then came the New Eden Missile Tank crisis, we had seen OP weapons come and go by then but nothing on this scale and the current issues with Tanks pale in comparison to this incident. I was suddenly in demand my growing skills in AV were finally worth something to some people and it was around this time I think that player corps where created.
I was reluctant to join a corp due to my lacking experience in FPS games but back then you would run into the same people in a match more often and that's how I met a player called General Shots. It wasn't some amazing feat where I had saved his ass from a Missile tank just that he happened to be under fire from it when I unleashed an old school Forge round into it's weak spot at point blank range. He ended up recruiting me to his corp Project 9 after hounding me about it for a while.
I stayed with Project 9 until it disbanded after a particular update and a following incident. I had a great time with them there were some great players and it was my first real foray into the MMO side of the game. During the timeframe I was with Project 9 I met a couple of other players who tried to recruit me over to their own corps one however stood out above the rest and has become my current CEO and I would say good friend. I first met Stine Control he was running his Warclone character and we hit it off fairly well, he proposed an alliance with my then current corp Project 9 and his own corp Carbon 7 but if memory serves this fell through. We stayed in touch and as so often happened back then would end up on the same team so kept fighting together.
After the fateful update and SP reset Project 9 was no more and I found myself running solo honing my skills against the same HAV pilots I had been combatting for Project 9, but now I had no infantry support and the days of gentlemanly duels had ended as had the days of the HMG since the Sharpshooter skill had been removed. I needed a new Corp if I was to survive, so fate intervened and I bumped into Stine Control, I asked to join up and I've been with Carbon 7 ever since. I've met new players that have stayed with us and many who have moved on, the corp has grown a lot and has some of the best players I know.
I fought in the Battle for Caldari prime event with my corp mates which still goes down as one of Dusts great moments for me. I have seen the rise and fall of so many weapons and classes along with the evolution of Dust from what was a genuine Beta to the constantly evolving product we see now. I have had to adapt and change so much from when I started playing this game and it will be interesting to look back in another year or so and see where we are.
Grit my teeth, set my feet, Forge gun at the ready and my aim steady, Let's do this!!!

Hello o7
Past... I played BF2 on pc for a really long time before my pc was too old to deal with it... After that my wife went to the shop and came back with PS3 for the kids (5)... Lucky they are all girls so they like to do more sporty / creative things than just play and sit. I played BF3 on ps3 for about 700+ hours and needed a break from fps.
And a year ago(2013-01) I found out that Dust514 was free and tried it... still trying...
I really liked it back then when it was new for almost everybody. I too remember the Caldari event etc. and they where great! One of the things that really took my heart was one of the first games where I accidentally squadded up with Big popa Smurf and started to follow him in my logi suit.... TEAMPLAY omg...
It works...
A few calls and few game nights(wh40k) with my buddies and some cool stories about dust and Beer for Evil Mercs was ready. Fatties and a Logileader. Most of my friends are not so fps type of players so we came up with this idea of Logi/Forge/Forge/Forge/Sniper/Sniper Squad set. We had fun and the early protodonnas hated and loved us for shooting their suits and making stomping harder. My corp still keeps going and we still keep trying. We have allways felt like the underdog because our gungame and personal skills dont keep up with the "pro" players. So we try to make the game fun sometimes try different tactics and sometimes just fool around drunk.
Lately we have opened recruitment to get more people on the corporation and we had some great success doing that. Maybe we could be competetive someday..
I am happy that I tested Dust I have had many nights in dust where I have not even played a round just talk about the game and life in general. I think that happens on any game that has got voice chat etc.
In Future... We started to play Eve as a group... Eats up some time from Dust but atleast we can chat and get drunk the as in Dust we dont try to be superstars just to have fun.
TL:DR Thank you CCP for a game with some little annoying thingies. Thank you protostomping redberry someday somehow I WILL ORBITAL YOUR *** FROM ABOVE Thank you newbie blueberry for trying to stay alive Thank you Beercases for making evenings fun and every morning feel like hell...because lack of sleep...
One thing that I just feel like a personal failure in dust... If I only would have spotted that recruitment thing..... ooh the shiny things... but for now I just try to HTFU

one year ago around this time my first clone was created.
i am an experienced gamer of all genre's but i mostly play fps, rpg, rts, and mmo's. i have had many great times and many emotions had with all the games I've played (when i first got them all the way to when i beat them) that have made them worth while. i am an ex-COD, veteran halo fan, an ex- Ace Combat pilot, an RTS conqueror, a ex-Devil May Cry player, a PC gamer, ex-atari user, ex-any old console games and many more that could be added to this list. i have been gaming ever since i could remember. (around 2003) my very first game was an rts game called wargames, it was a very fun game that was very strategic with 2 opposing enemies, humans vs. robots, with many diff. types of units to handle certain other units.
when ever i officially came into the existence of dust, i was already well adapted to it. i learned how the skills worked (to a degree) and i quickly learned how combat and how the weapons worked as well. my first corp that i joined was TUL. that was when i started watching Pyrex's dust video's and learning/adapting from them. i became easily adapted to the game's play-style and learned the game quite easily. i remember all the fun days of chromosome when ambush was a "bunker down for a fight" type of game. i quickly decided that i wanted to become a "jack of all trades" and try out everything (which i still do to this very day) and i have never regretted it since. i later became a decent tanker later in uprising even though they were easily killed, i loved using vehicles at the time. nearing 1.5 or 6 i became a ADS pilot and i had much fun using them even till today. (my days as a vehicle pilot were fun yet expensive.)
i have experienced all parts of life in dust and i know what everything is like, i have been with many people, corps, and mercs. of all types. i have never once used proto dropsuits (except with the recent release of proto faction) and if you know me than you know that i do just as well with any other type of gear and make it effective. i usually have a good time in dust and unlike other people i rather enjoy this game a lot and i dont quit simply because something is broken or "OP". i have had and met many people over the history of dust, like pyrex, DS the drunk heavy, EVO, and many others that are my friends and i cant think of. (my days with people meant something to me.)
i like to consider myself a true mercenary because i usually fight alone just finding ways to kill people and help out my team win a battle, even if we are losing due to either proto stomping or zerg rushes(which i hate zerg rushes). when i fought in FW i use to fight for the amarr and considered myself an Anmatar so i would have a reason for fighting for them, but until 1.7 i switched to fighting for the minmatar and the minmatar only because i have learned much about my true race and what they have been through, so i am now and forever a minmatar loyalist. (i fight for my faction and i am proud of being minmatar and being a part of their history)
now a days i don't buy that many games that often so i primarily play dust when ever i can and on the weekends. i still play because this game has a lot of potential and i would like to see this all the way through. i am an EVE fan and a ccp supporter and i have and always will love this game forever.
i enjoy this game everyday and i hope this game will become something more than it is now.
i will always remember what the chrome days were like.
its been a fun and interesting year for me
and i continue to fight and grind for a reason... this is "most" of my story and i am glad/proud to have one with so many memories and events all in between.

I'm much like Evolution-7 in my story with Dust, for the first week i tried infantry, but after seeing dropships rocket past my head, I had enough of watching and began to skill completely into Logi dropships, specifically the Eryx (which was what Evolution did too!) I drove blueberries places for hours on end, despite the fact I earned literally 0 WP for doing so, and got shot down a good amount of times by good forge guns and railguns.
During that time was when i also began to get skilled at flying, and I've basically been flying the same way for around 6-7 months now. It was a lot harder for DS pilots up until 1.7, but hey, in chromosome we had the amazing afterburners that (if not used carefully) could propel you at 500 mph into the side of a building, But man did it look amazing to see them rocket into the air that fast, especially when someone was trying to shoot you down.
If there's 1 thing i miss from a year ago, it was those afterburners.

One year ago Chromosome was opened for fresh blood. I picked up Thale's and burned through some 20 of them in attempt to reach 100 kills in a pubstomp. I gave an open offer for 500 million isk to anyone topping 100 with a legit screenshot (no teamwork detected), but nobody cashed in.
I reached 90 in a manus peak as the best effort. I still wonder if that was the highest solo pubstomp of chromosome. I know I was twitching too hard to take a successful photo after that lol. http://s1339.photobucket.com/user/trollsroyce/media/WP_000116_zps8588e10e.jpg.html |

...I don't think it's our fault that CCP chose to give beta players 20-40K SP per match. Sorry you weren't there early enough. And it seems like you're the one who is crying, not the vets.
He does not know what I am talking about read above.
When they implemented the new SP system i had 11 million SP on my ex-toon.

A year ago, I had just left my old corp and joined PFBHz. Much joy was had in chromosome melting folks with the viziam. Also, a year ago, the Miami Dolphins sucked and were owned by a football moron. A year later, not much has changed on the Dolphins front. |

I could link you a highly secretive video of a dust video of one of my mates from replication days. Will have to link it through a channel outside of CCP's control. Don't want it getting blocked for breaching NDA right?

Would the NDA still apply even though the game is now online to everyone?

I have been around for well over a year, I officially downloaded DUST on December 1st 2012, but my decision to purchase DUST goes back a little farther.
During the 2010 - 2012 period, I played a ton of different PC FPS and racing games. But with the low budget and less-than-ideal PC a kid could have, I mostly stuck to F2P shooters and other semi-graphics intensive games. I remember playing a ton of Team Fortress 2 and various Battlefield titles, including Bad Company 2, Heroes and Play4Free. I also played many games from the Need For Speed franchise, and remains my favorite racing franchise to date, regardless of its missteps.
But anyway, in 2010 I started looking into MMORPGs, and my first kind-of MMORPG was Need For Speed World, just after it had launched. I played it for about a year before I gave up, but I found an awesome community in it that I stuck around to for years to come. From this community and a few purchases by my brother, I started dabbing into other MMORPGs, Guild Wars being my first actual one. Then at the spring of 2011 I joined Star Trek Online, where my interest in sci-fi really sparked to life. A few months before that I also joined a roleplaying group within the World community I joined, and by the time I began playing STO I was seriously hooked to doing more. In the summer of 2012 I joined the Star Wars The Old Republic closed beta, so I ended up juggling my time with that and STO for the entire summer.
So soon afterwards I entered STO, I joined a fleet with an active roleplaying group, and most of 2011 was spent with roleplaying in STO. Come 2012, and I found myself a tiny indie MMO by the name of Face of Mankind, based in a cyberpunk future which I played heavily for a while. By this time I had already found EVE Online, and even downloaded the trial to try it out a bit. I had no clue what I was doing though, so I tried it for a week and then went back to FoM. But when schools ended and the summer holiday began, my PC broke down and I was cut off from gaming for the entire summer. That is until my summer job ended and I got my pay. With that I bought my PS3.
My brother already owned one previously, and I often used it to play my first console shooter Battlefield 3 until I got my own copy of the game and the PS3 at the end of August in 2012. The rest of autumn I played BF3 together with my brother, and occasionally browsing the PS Store for games to buy. I noticed this weird DUST 514 game there which was apparently in closed beta, so I looked it up from the internet. Since it was linked to the MMO EVE Online, I decided to sign up for the closed beta and continue honing my console FPS skills with BF3. Come December 1st 2012 and I finally decided to buy the merc pack and join the closed beta. A few days later I also got an invitation to the beta, so I decided to give to my brother(he never really used it though). I used a name that I had used before in another community and the race from my very brief time in the EVE online trial. That's when my mercenary career started.
The very first moments after logging in was spent exploring the quarters and looking through all the menus, before I joined my first battle. Back in my PC FPS times, I had excelled at generally using sniper rifles, so I instantly spawned in with a sniper rifle and tried shooting a few people. Didn't end so successfully. But I kept playing and trying out different things from the market, I finally decided to use the HK4M shotguns and Dragonfly suit I got from the merc pack. Just after 2013 hit, I began talking to DCY4 in my NPC corp chat, which happened to be Squagga's alt. Before that I had been in this random corp called Skynet Mercs which was very short-lived before I left it. Squagga got me into joining CrimeWave Syndicate since from the few times we squadded we did quite well.
So with all the aurum I had I bought UVTs and SP boosters, and I was nudged towards skilling into scout shotgunner suits, which I already had some experience of from using dragonfly suits and HK4M shotguns. I trained myself with the people in CrimeWave and gained many good friends from there. Then Fanfest came and Uprising was getting close, and suddenly all the guys from CrimeWave were being moved to another corp in the EoN alliance, which was just starting at the time. Drama happened, but I stuck around for a while.
This was when I rediscovered EVE Online as well. I created a new character and named it Denak Calamari, and began my industry career. The disputes within CrimeWave members got worse, until I finally left and joined the mining corp I found in EVE. My DUST character's stay in this mining corp was short lived before I joined Burgezz. With them I seriously looked into the more competitive side of EVE, and through the days upon days or practicing with shotgun scouts, I got into their PC team, just weeks before Uprising launched.
By this point I had really started looking into EVE RP, and I dug around a bit. Eventually I found The Summit and its forum Intergalactic Summit. I honed my character's Intaki background a bit and began roleplaying. As Uprising launched, I was getting more and more interested in the RP scene. From this I eventually came to the decision of leaving Buegezz and join an RP corp, the Intaki Liberation Front. I've been stuck in that road ever since.
Fast forward to now, I'm a dedicated scout, a well known figure within EVE RP and one of the founding members of the DUST RP scene, and an active member of the Intaki Liberation Front. A lot of things have happened, both good and bad, but I am very happy what what I am right now. I'll continue playing DUST, and I hope that I'll get to see its vision fully realized some time, some day.

# Hear about DUST # Join at an early time # Enjoyed the game and the progress CCP were making # CCP releases uprising # Gets worse from then on # Now in 2014 - people miss the old days.
Does that sound about right? CCP love to instil us with grand ideas and then slowly f**ks things up as time passes. Deletes content. Introduces stupid AA and bullet magnetism that lets people shoot you through walls and around corners.
Chromosome! Damn they were the good days. CCP what are you guys doing? lol. |

Been a gamer since I was three years old, listing of what I can remember:
Kid Dracula Kirby's Dreamland Mario Land Donkey Kong Country Gain Ground Doom Mario Paint Super Mario World Mario Kart Dark Forces Civ 2 Sid Meier's Gettysburg Sim City Sim Life Oregon Trail Math Munchers Number Munchers Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing Pokemon Blue Pokemon Yellow Battle Toads Double Dragon Battle Toads vs. Double Dragon Terranigma Pac man Asteroid Daggerfall Morrowind Golden Eye 64 Blast Corps Starcraft Warcraft Warcraft 2 Warcraft 3 Command and Conquer Command and Conquer Red Alert
Tired of listing but I'd have to say ive played even beaten hundreds of games always been a true gamer and nerd none of this I played Call of Duty I'm a total gamer yo!
Though I have played Call of Duty, Call of Duty 2, Call of Duty 3, and Call of Duty 4 along with the first Medal of Honor and Medal of Honor Rising Sun. Haven't really played any Call of Duty past 4 because it's all just re skins of 4, sadly with the mainstream attraction to gaming has come an over all stagnant market. Sad when I think of the insane number of styles and genres of games that existed in yesteryear. Thank god for the indie gaming market keeping the spirit of gaming alive.
I think still my favorite FPS combined arms game of all time still has to be Battlefield 1942: Sorry dust 514 or any other game in the same genre for that matter, you Ain't no Battlefield 1942. Long live Soviet Rocket cars and AA guns being used as anti everything!!! |
