Hello All,
I am new here. I previously posted in another thread about my play style. I am transitioning here from Battlefield 3, where I play as all classes and consider myself an Ace Chopper Pilot.
Because of Battlefield (and playing to win not focus on KDR) I am a tactical sniper. I look for targets and call them out, spot, issue warnings, designate (which i don't think exists here?), and over all "that eye in the sky, with a gun". Good snipers do not sit entirely outside of range, but tend to hang back or at least be in the rear/center of the moving force or a nicely defended vantage point. I would say a good sniper is as much about surveillance as it is sniping. A lot of the time i will even just weaken targets from a distance to make it easier for the ground forces to mop up. I also tend to snipe snipers before infantry to disable anyone who may be assisting in the way I am. Anyway that said that's my play style as a sniper.
I haven't even taken a stab at piloting yet, but I look forward to it. As the dynamics of the games (Dust and Battlefield 3) being so different in terms of physics I do not expect my Battlefield 3 experience to equate much.
My big question is regarding builds and corporations. If anyone could recommend builds to me and let me know if a sniper/pilot build would conflict or if I should use a different character for such. I also intend to be playing Medic down the line.
As for corps I guess I should attempt to find a good one? I've only played 4 matches or so to date and I have had little communication with other players. Since communication is a big aspect of my game style are there any recommended corps for noobs like myself?

Hello Rez, I came from BF3 too, being a guerilla warfare douche using my As Val I can easily say Dust is an entire different feeling. Sniping will also take some time to get used to you need to be further back than you would be in BF. I have proficiency 4 in snipers and I can say that a tactical sniper will work very well considering I still don't one shot many things. Try to stay a good 150m-200m behind your squad if you are trying to be slightly aggressive, or else the rail rifle will touch you in special places. I also doubled as a pilot in BF3 for transport, although I did go on 50 kill streak with the little bird I wasn't much for the Cobra or the other helicopter. Piloting will be sort of the same except the sticks are switched and the paddles are moved to the left side only. ADS are a whole different story too, and I'm not a very good pilot for Assault dropship but I am pretty good flying the regular dropships. When I end up playing with one of my squads in BF3 I often end up flying Transport, I am the only one who can land the Huey or Kasatka pretty much anywhere... lol and I am the Dbag that uses a P90 or F2000. Personally love Cobra/Viper and the Little bird / Z-11W are beasts.
I had my first outing as pilot, tho I only had 2 things fitted on. I didn't like the original sticks and ended up adjusting them to southpaw I think. I know I just made it so R1 and R2 control my throttle (similar to BF3). Once I made the adjustment the Myron handles surprisingly similar. I ended up landing on a roof and sniping from there.
Sniping today I learned to keep my distance I got a few instant kills on me. I am not crazy about one shot kill sniper weapons unless it's a headshot but I get that in SciFi games like this its going to happen. My goal is to get my stats up so I can do as much damage as possible in a single shot.
I am looking for builds to use still, want to make sure I am maximizing my character. I plan on making a medic or a heavy too eventually, while I like sniping I also like being in the trenches. I also need to look around and see if there is a way to transfer ISK between EVE characters and Dust (unless someone answers that) because I use to play EVE back in the day, I quit in 2009 . |

Welcome Rez, in answer to your question, the sniper/pilot combo is excellent. The playstyles suit each other because pure snipers requires (relatively) little SP investment, while vehicles are an SP sink.
Also, some of the most favored perches are only accessible by DS. I've heard Irony knows his sniping, but for Drop Ships I recommend Judge Rhadamanthus' Youtube videos and thread in the Rookie Training Grounds.
There are also a few channels in-game you could check out, "1st Airborne" and "Conor Squad", both without the quotation marks. Also feel free to add "B-C-G Pub", if you happen to see a guy there named Demoneyez 91 ask him about sniping, he's the best I've run with.

Also, in case someone one hasn't let you know yet or you haven't read it in another thread, when using a sniper rifle look at the numbers that appear in the bottom rightish when looking down the scope. If you're painting a red, if it says 90%, you're on their body. If it says 175%, you're on their head. However, this is usually only helpful if the target is standing still, or if they are running in a pretty straight line so you can anticipate them.
That being said, others here will be great input on sniper/pilots, but I feel its my duty to warn you that a medic role is very SP expensive. Not even getting into the "support" part in addition to just healing (ie ammo, scanning, uplinks, etc). So if you find your loves are first and foremost sniper/pilot, I'd keep that focus there and not really set your eyes on medic so early. You'll end up spreading yourself thin and it not growing in any direction.

What we try to instill in our corp sniper is exactly what you have mentioned. Over watch helps communicate whats happening on the field and allows assault to focus on reds. I prefer the tactical riffles because well placed head shots allow you to take down more enemies once you've mastered said head shots. So I usually do a Tac with 2 damage mods a decent nano hive, pistol and a drop suite that can take 1 or 2 shots. Also, make a heavy counter snipe suite so that when you do get taken down you can re spawn with heavy suite and search out the sniper. The tactical Also allows you to chip away at more enemies on the ground. I really appreciate snipers that keep an eye on 1 or 2 objectives and helps keep off pesky enemies. Pilots are GOLDEN, as a good pilot and provide transportation, allow gunners to plow through ground forces, aaaand fend of the hated tank spammers. Hello Rez,
I personally also had an extensive background in BF3 when I came over to DUST. I was a crack sniper (1000yd headshot max) and an ace chopper/jet pilot.
The sniping here is a lot different. You'll find that you'll be able to see a stationary target and when you line up a shot on them, you don't hit them. It seems to me that the range is limited on some of the sniper rifles. Also, it is worth noting the efficiency rating, as someone else has mentioned (<100% = body shot, >100% = head shot). You should go for headshots all the time, in the interest of ammo efficiency if for no other reason.
The aircraft physics in this game are so different that I temporarily gave up piloting after my first attempt, at least until I was able to save up some extra ISK and buy a few ships to practice with. I recommend practicing with the Viper rather than the Gorgon, at least at first. It's a bit more squirrely, but much more responsive. Once you get the hang of the mechanics then I suggest practicing with both Gallente (armor-based) and Caldari (shield-based) vehicles. Also, there will be times that flying a dropship may not be feasible (like if the other team has multiple AV guys gunning for you). For that reason I find it a worthwhile investment to invest in both LAV's and HAV's. Then if you deem it too dangerous, land somewhere safe, recall your dropship and call in a tank or truck.
You'll find that as you buy more and more expensive ships (ex: Gorgon < Grimsnes < Incubus), the ships become much, much more durable and agile. I was horrified by how poor the Gorgon handled, but when I bought and flew my first Incubus, I was ecstatic. I experimented with various characters and put skill points all over the place before settling on the specific SP investments I wanted to make on my main. After that I eventually decided that I preferred the assault rifle style of play over the sniper rifle style.
There are two tips I'll give you that will help you immensely:
1. Invest in drop uplinks to level 3. You'll then be able to get the R-9 Drop Uplink, which allows you to have two of them deployed at one time. Make a loadout with a Militia Light Frame (I prefer Minmatar because it's the fastest and gets a bonus to Nova Knives, which I enjoy using), submachine gun, R-9 Drop Uplink, and 2x Militia Cardiac Regulators. If you put and points in Grenadier (which you should, eventually), throw on flux grenades as well. This is a very, very cheap loadout that you can whip out in Ambush, start throwing drop uplinks down, and rake in the dough. It's not unusual for me to clear 300k ISK in one Ambush match with this loadout. If you're in need of ISK, that's the most efficient way I know of to get more. In addition, you might be surprised how much punch the flux nades/submachine gun packs. Submachine guns are very effective against armor...combined with flux grenades and a light suit you are, quite literally, a heavy's worst nightmare. You can strafe around him faster than he can turn, and your submachine gun will chew through his armor like a shark through a surfer.
It's also worth noting that this method, through garnering a huge amount of WP, allows you to not only generate ISK faster, but SP as well, letting you cap out for the week more quickly. As someone that works full time, commutes to school full time, and is working on planning a wedding, I rarely get to cap out. This makes what little time I get to try and get some SP of paramount importance. (Thank CCP for passive SP, or I'd have given up long ago).
2. LEVEL UP SUBMACHINE GUNS. They are a sidearm and therefore relatively inexpensive in terms of SP. Submachine guns with points thrown into ammo capacity, reload speed, dispersion, and proficiency can rival an assault rifle. You can use a cheap submachine gun to save money and still be effective, but I promise you won't regret the extra points you put into the other submachine gun skills because they improve the effectiveness of any submachine gun dramatically. In addition, it's rather funny when you see someone trying to flank you, you pull out your sidearm, hit them with a flux nade to strip their shields, and then kill them before they know what happened. A good sniper is one thing, but a good sniper with chops in CQC is quite a force to be reckoned with. This playstyle actually led me to design a new character strictly for this role...minus the sniper rifles. It's quite fun.
TL; DR:
1. Go for headshots (look for efficiency % >100). 2. Purchase and use all varieties of vehicles, not just dropships. 3. Invest in drop uplinks to level 3, get R-9 uplinks and if you need ISK throw them everywhere in Ambush matches. Priority goes to places that allow your team to flank the enemy or spawn out of the line of fire. 4. Level up submachine guns and use them in conjunction with flux grenades.

Well raskil tribe would love to have you join. I am an excellent Dropship pilot and I used to snipe as well. If you want to be part of a dust only corp you could join Raskil Militia

What doesn't kill you makes you stronger. Unless your leg just got chopped off. Then you would be significantly weaker.

Sniping and being an assault dropship pilot are the two hardest things to do competitively, but by far in the highest demand, second only to Class A tankers.
If you want to be a sniper for a good corp, you have to be able to headshot someone going full speed in a lav, or jumping off a building, and generally, you need to have a fit capable of killing everything short of a gallente logi or heavy in a single shot.
Same goes for being an ADS pilot and just as SP intensive and skill-based. You need to know how to dodge railguns, forge guns, and support your infantry from the air. Make friend with rail tankers on this path because they will save you a lot from other rail tankers. A good ADS pilot is rare. The top PC corps rarely have more than 2 good pilots so you can potentially cash in. Either way, you're gonna need at least 10 mil in either build, so pick one and run with it because neither are easy paths.
