For reference, this would be a reasonable length for a 3m blade. Count the arm length and you can MAYBE argue 4m on a sword swing, more easily so if you want to have game mechanics trumping logic.
3m range on a KNIFE is all kinds of ridiculous, and also, 10m is SHOTGUN range. Keep in mind that MELEE weapons aren't going to be hitting remotely close to CQC gun range, and never should be.
Cutting knives back to 2m (arm + blade length + game mechanics), but giving them a lunge, then making a sword with 4m range would be reasonable. |

I am really liking the idea of a shield for Heavies. Would be great for playing the defender role. If anyone has played the Resistance: Fall of Man series you'll remember walking around with an HMG that could pop up an energy shield that could take a certain amount of damage before it crapped out. Bullets could go through it one way but not go through the opposite direction. Would be pretty sick for setting up shop and holding down a letter. It would make for great squad support as they could all stand behind the shield that was deployed and fire through until too much damage or a flux takes it out. Actually, in Resistance: Fall of Man, the weapon was the Augur, and it was a slow-firing rifle type weapon. The shield was a two-way barrier, not one-way, but the weapon itself could shoot through walls. Its projectiles slowed down while passing through objects (including the shield), but dealt extra damage based on how much stuff they had passed through before hitting the enemy. |

Dunkel Hoffnung Mk3 wrote:Ah yes good point. I forgot about the Auger but that was a good example of how the shield could be used. As a drop it down and fire through it method. The HVAP Wraith which is the games minigun could deploy a shield on the end of the barrel and allow him to walk around and protect those who are behind him.
As quoted from the games Wiki
"As with the Auger, the Wraith is best used in a supporting role. You can deploy the shield which has 50 "health" but sprinting, firing, reloading or aiming down the sight automatically turns off the shield. Due to its poor range and accuracy, it is best suited for close quarters."
it is a solid idea for a FPS game and has been done before. i would LOVE to see this kind of thing put into action. Also as quoted from the same wiki page about the Wraith: "appears only in Resistance 2"
It's not a weapon the SERIES is known for, the Auger is. It also isn't in Resistance: Fall of Man, which you included when you first mentioned it. That's why I was emphasising that the gun with the shield is primarily seen as the Auger.
Both are fun weapons though. Definitely worth looking as as a comparison/consideration for how to build a cool sci-fi weapon.
Wouldn't mind a DUST equivalent to the Bullseye, now that I think about it... |
